Hello there. I'm headin on a J1 to Vegas with a couple of mates for the summer. Just wondering about a few of the usual things..... Availability of jobs for people under 21 and accomodation for 3 months? How expensive is it to live there? Is it really the best place to go for the summer?

If anybody has any sort of information about Vegas, your reply would be very much appreciated!! :) Cheers

    Slán

Heard the cops there are mean and corrupt, so don't run foul of them! Also, it will be mega-hot outdoors.....

It's not really mega-hot outdoors as there's feck all humidity. Chicago was much worse even though temperatures were 8 to 10 degrees hotter.

Las Vegas and being under 21yrs isn't really the ideal mix, at all.
Places are unbelievably strict regarding IDs: Nightclubs, Casinos, Bars etc all check them thoroughly (casinos esp).

Went to vegas for 5 days two summers ago as a holiday during my J1. 5 days was more than enough for all of us, but then again living there might be a different experience to the one usually had by tourists.

Presume you mean Chicago was cooler... Anyway, while humidity affects comfort level, LV is still mega-hot in summer!

No point in going if your not 21 or don't have very very good fake id's imo

Vegas sounds great to most people but you will be fed up of it after a week or two. Also if your under 21 there is absolute no point in going to it. Your better off going to the likes of Santa Monica, San Diego, Reohboth Beach, Myrtle Beach , Cape Code and the likes

Dont do it!! Vegas is BRILLIANT but only for short periods of time. If your not 21 it really isnt a good place to be for too long cause you wont be able to do alot of the things. On top of that its in the Desert so it reaches over 45 degrees. At 1 in the morning its still 30.

Go to California somewhere and visit Vegas for a week instead.

    Cheers for the advice.

Only problem is we booked our flights through USIT and can't change the airports now.... I think we're stuck in Vegas......

    any suggestions...:(

You should be able to get cheap flights from Vegas to various locations in California.

Flagstaff, Az might be worth looking into. It's a town, but gets a lot of Grand Canyon tourist traffic. A lot cooler too, because it's at about 5,000 feet. Stay out of Kingman - full of survivalist loonies!

Brenner08, just fly to California only about €120 return or get a Greyhound which cost me €50. It takes around 7 hours to get LA by bus

Ah right.... Thanks a lot.... appreciate the help!

What's LA like to stay in?

LV is suffering bad from the economic downturn too, it's supposed to be one of the worst hit cities, not a good place to go looking for jobs.

Dont live in LA either!! Its just a massive city. Nothing too interesting about it either that you cant see in a few days (you have to visit Six Flags Theme Park at some stage). Even Hollywood isnt that exciting and alot of it is pretty run down (its definatly still worth a visit to have a look around and see some of the famous sites and the massive houses in the hills. But it will only take a day)

Stay in a Beach town south of LA. I was in Huntington Beach last year. I drove to LV in about 4.5 hours. In a beach town you get the beach lifestyle and you can try out surfing and stuff aswell. Search the forum for some J1 threads. There is a big one there somewhere that will tell you a bit more about some of the cities around the area.

Been tryin to sort this out today.... the plan now is to arrive in LA airport (because we've no choice) and travel to somewhere like San Fransisco...

GOOO to San Francisco!!! Without a doubt.
I travelled around America last Summer (West Coast, Central and East Side).

    San Fran... my favourite.
Lots to do... for free. Really cool place. If I could go there right now, I would:D But, ho hum, I have work and a massive loan to pay back first:(.

We drove all along the West Coast, which is beautiful... drive along the 1 route if you can. Rent a car even. It's really pretty:)

Santa Barbara is nice buuuut... not my favourite.
San Diego is heaps of fun! Also lots to do there.
L.A.... I'd say, check it out for a day or 2, but really you could bypass it.

Vegas is mental!!!:D:eek: But really, like most people have mentioned... a weekend is enough. Do go though... and bring plenty of money as it's very expensive. Very strict on ID.

Arizona...wow. We went to Sedona which is gorgeous because everything is so natural and undisturbed. Tempe I think is the name of the town we also went to... it's more lively and "touristy".

Chicago... also fun..ish. Not my favourite.

New York... brilliant!!! Something for everyone. We stayed in upper east manhattan and williamsburg. Had a blast. So much to do and see!

My overall recommendation is.... San Francisco!;)
You can organise cheap internal flights to get there from when you first arrive in America. That's what I did. It'll be worth it if you do.
If you want more info PM me. You're going to have such a brilliant time:D

Use kayak.com for booking cheap internal flights. Be careful with the Greyhound buses - they are pretty scummy and it's not that much cheaper than flying.

Im think of hitting Vegas on a J1 aswell for the summer, was there before for a few days, could be a bit of a gamble trying to live their for a few months alright. The other option is Chicago, anybody know anything about that?

Dont mind Chicago, too stuffy. did you research the accomodation in Vegas? Good value to be had and looks like plenty of hospitality jobs there too

Was in Vegas during the summer for a month and then went to Chicago for a month and then San Fran for a few days.

My Vegas would be very different to most peoples as I was staying with American's in a nice Villa off the strip (Swimming Pool, Big TV, Pool Table, Internet etc), there were two cars in the house so transport was always readily available, we all had plenty of cash to spend and therefore had a great time. I couldn't imagine what a J1er would do for a summer in Vegas, where you'd get a job, what you would do when you weren't working etc. The place is designed to take your money, as a result when you aren't sitting around the house/by the pool, you are spending money. And thats if you are 21, if you are under 21 i'd imagine you'd be stuck doing nothing and wishing you were home.

Although I had a great time in Vegas, Chicago was definately the highlight. One of my favourite city's. Great people, plenty to see and do and there are definately places to go if you are under 21. My 18 year old cousin was over there and had no problems while using a really badly faked driving licence. If you go to Chicago I highly reccommend in Wrigleyville, it's the are around Wrigley Field where the Chicago Cubs baseball team play. We stayed in Boystown which is the gay district of Chicago, was quite surreal but brilliant at the same time. Boystown is right beside clark street which is one of the main party streets in Chicago. Only problem would be getting jobs, last year there were people coming home early because they couldn't get a job. I wasn't working but the two lads I was staying with just got a job through persistant. They kept drinking in the same bar, kept asking if there was work going and finally one day one of the bar staff walked out in the middle of the shift and the two lads were offered jobs once they started immediately.

San Francisco was also a cool city, a bit colder but still had some heat, plenty of irish over there last year and there seemed to be plenty of jobs available, most working in some tourist type thing (bike rental etc).

A good place and if you go you should drop into the greentortoise(I think thats what its called) its a hostel but a great place to meet J1ers, loads of people go in, even though they aren't staying.

I'd still say Chicago if I were you though.

    Chicago is amazing.

Great summer weather. And beaches, unlike NY.
