The stand out anthems...Desert island discs

Not obscure tunes by obscure acts that noone's heard. I'm talking about the really big tunes that are, by common consensus, classics. The tunes that absolutely must be in everyone's collection somewhere.

    I'd say, for starters

Orbital - Halcyon. In particular, the 7" version that appears on their Works collection. I just thought everything about it was perfect, from the very first eerie vocals, which sounded familiar but different (it was years before I heard the Opus/Hawkshaw/Fine Day thing), then the way the tune and beat kick in, right through to the fusion of everything towards the end. It's a classic.

Good idea for a thread. For my first contribution im gonna go with Rez by Underworld. Think this is one of their best and can still cause dance floor mayhem to this day.

Yep. Think that ticks all the boxes.

There are plenty of anthems out that that I just don't want to put in, because they border on pop or cheese, so will overlook some obvious trance ones like Van Dyk's 'For An Angel' and Faithless 'Insomniac'. Think it would be like sticking Bon Jovi on some Monsters of Rock compilation.

But another one I thought of, because the artist has to make any list and this is one of his more accessible moments

Aphex Twin - On. Great great tune, great video too.

Great choice Conor and one i may have picked myself but seen as yhou've picked it ill go with this seminal classic, still revered to this day (the remix of it isn't too bad either but obviously the original cannot be beaten)

This tune really does it for me and is probably THE tune that got me totally into the whole scene.

HARDCORE UPROAR - Together ( FFRR RECORDS )

"This is the sound of Hardcore Uproar, more powerful than you could ever imagine". And they weren't wrong....
From the spine tingling intro the crowd noises to the Italo house inspired piano, this tune has it all....this tune was what a RAVER was all about..."TOGETHER"...first released back in '90 and to see this crew play live would have been a ****ing amazing thing...enjoy

    Label: FFRR
    Catalog#: FX 143
    Format: Vinyl, 12"
    Country: UK
    Released: 1990
    Genre: Electronic
    Style: House

Future Sound of London - Papa New Guinea

    Moby - Go

Daft Punk - Rollin and Scratchin (Debatable, but I'm putting it in

Good choice alright, would have to be up there. An anthem for that era.

Okay, if we have to allow trance in, I guess this would represent it. Or maybe Nalin and Kane's 'Beachball', which is a guilty secret one for me.

As for LFO 'LFO', Moby 'Go' and FSOL 'Papua New Guinea', of course they all are absolute standouts. My wife sometimes complains about this stuff and I just point out that, unlike other tunes where opinion counts, it is a matter of fact that LFO and Papua New Guinea are brilliant.

I guess there has to be something from very recent times, and without wishing to stir up that whole minimal argument this is a birrova good one...

Nathan Fake/James Holden - The Sky was Pink.

This is the best white label of all time IMO, how it never got released on a label is absolutely bizzare as it was a massive tune in 92/93.

    Liberation - Liberation 2
    http://www.discogs.com/release/180375

    Label: ZYX Music
    Catalog#: LIBERATION 2
Format: Vinyl, 12", Promo, White Label
    Country: UK
    Released: 1993
    Genre: Electronic
    Style: House
    Notes: Runout groove reads: "SST"
Contains Excerpts from Jesse Jackson's 1984 address to the Democratic Convention, California.
Contains a piano line from "Greater Reward" by Severed Heads.

    Let's have some HARDCORE:cool:

A seminal Rave/Hardcore classic released on the legendary Production House label, still revered to this day.

Acen - Trip II the Moon (Part 2)

    http://www.discogs.com/Acen-Trip-II-The-Moon-Part-2/release/246583

    Label: Production House
    Catalog#: PNC 042 R
    Format: CD, Maxi-Single
    Country: UK
    Released: 1992
    Genre: Electronic
    Style: Hardcore
    Notes: In card sleeve.

Track 2 sample - the (contemporary) classical section is taken from Chi Mai by Ennio Morricone. (Chi Mai was written for the 1981 BBC television series 'The Life & Times of David Lloyd George' - the title of which presumably inspired the name of Acen's track here).

Track 3 samples - "Just close your eyes / forget your name / forget the world / forget the people / go insane" from The Celebration of the Lizard by The Doors and "overdose" from Mr Kirk's Nightmare by 4 Hero

Yeah, two great tunes from the hardcore days alright. Well known and classics of that genre, Acen's must be the tune most fans say is their favourite from that era across dance forums.

Thought of another few classics. Pretty sure the Ministry of Sound did some big online poll a few years back to pick the best tune year by year, and then released a compliation. This made it for 1998. Like it or hate it, everyone should have it - it should be played very very loud.

    Storm - Storm (Club Mix)
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5TqEQWqDQg&feature=related

Another classic from back in the day...with one of the most recognisable openings and riffs in any dance tune ever. It's not played half enough.
    Golden Girls - Kinetic
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=8MOhRBfIOY4

And another one that's instantly recognisable, though it's been mixed a million times I'd say...
    Congress - 40 Miles
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=jWqSvXtHDt0

And finally, the first tune that made me feel like my brain was being compressed, much and all as I loved house and early techno and ambient, the crescendo at the end was kinda headwrecking in a very good way. A bit overplayed, but still a staple in any collection.
Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness

Might be frowned upon by a few of the trance haters here, but this tune is absolutely astounding in my opinion. Rediscovered it recently and must've had it on repeat play for the best part of 3 days...

Slacker - Your face (in the mirror)

Dont think anyone could argue with this.

Midfield General - Coatnoise (Dave Clarke Remix)

Just found this section of the site and well I have to say its something else but heres two classics (well to me anyway)

    Natural High - Warp 69 and Moonchild - Variations.On.A.Theme

    Punchanella - San trancisco
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=EiaR5be41Io

Tall Paul - Rock da house
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=haYUa323XaA

    Way out west - Ajare
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=HI_ckAPCQhM

Great thread, bringing back some memories! Rez, Warp 69, Orbital and FSOL are all essentials.

Think this has drifted away from what I really meant.

It wasn't necessarily a favourite tune thread. For example, I love FSOL's 'Cascade', but I'm not sure it's a classic by common consensus, because not sure everyone actually knows it. 'Papua New Guinea', on the other hand, is unquestionably up there. Maybe I was a bit guilty of straying myself with Congress.

So maybe there should be a new rule, the tune must have charted. That sounds bad, but it means it hit the conscious of the general public.

I got where you were going with it but maybe Coatnoise is a step too far.

To redeem myself im gonna offer up:

    Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack:

A few that spring to mind...

The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds

My Bloody Valentine - Soon (Andrew Weatherall Mix)

Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall (Guilty pleasure!)

The Prodigy - Everybody in the Place

    808 State - Pacific

Opus III - Its A Fine Day (seeing as Halcyon got a mention!)

St Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (A Mix Of Two Halves)

There are endless amounts, assuming I got the jist of the thread :pac:

    Oh and of course this...

    Leftfield - Song of Life

Although I do prefer the tougher, 'Cut for Life' - not a chart hitter but needs a mention none the less. I spent a long time back in the day trying to track down this beaut after hearing it on the Carl Cox Essential mix around 95 or so. Love the familiar intro but when it kicks in, be-jaysus it knocks the sh*te outa ya! - on a decent / club system of course (hearing it now on youtube isn't quite having the same effect)
