The really good boards stuff

Kind of inspired by both the "House that Boards built" and the recent *ahem* comments in feedback about how mods are ruining this site and the users are all "sheeple" (which is a great namer for a Donegal nightclub, btw)

Anyway I only use a few of the fora here but I thought it might be good to list some of the really good things that have sprung from this website. Not the regular stuff you get on any forum but the exceptional and real life stuff.

Just off the top of my head:
    • Santa Strike Force - could it happen without Boards? Probably. Would it be such a big success? Absolutely not! A great fund raising idea that makes a huge real world difference. Without a strong community spirit it couldn't happen
    • Various Motors Meets - both for specialist interests (classics) and regional (like the Limerick meet up). Again a real opportunity for people to meet and exchange ideas and help. I know a number of people who have helped out on each others classic car projects off the back of Boards and were able to do work that they couldn't have done alone
    • Boards Athletic Club - A group off the Marathon & Triathlon forum grouped together and are in the process of forming a fully AAI affiliated athletics / running club. Sign ups for the Irish Mountain Racing Season have gone well and a very strong team have already competed at BHAA events (winning several category prizes already). Come April a team of 4 Boardsies will be jetting off to Rotterdam (hopefully all wearing Boards colours) to attempt to all run a sub 3 marathon - no small achievement if they do it! Teams are also being planned for the Cork marathon relay and there is a reasonable expectation of a placing, if our strongest runners can make it. Again the support of the community is what makes all of this happen

I know that there are regular Poker tournaments, that there is a Boards Cycle team, that there are regular competitions on Fitness, and on and on and on! None of which could happen if the site was anything like as bad as some feedback threads would have you believe.

So whats your "Best of Boards"?

My favourite thing was when all the boardsies got together to create an easy to follow map of the best secret surf spots.

    Nice idea for a thread.

The coffee forum's 'group buys' and the resulting 'meets' make up some of what is great bout boards.ie for me. We look at speciality roasteries from around the world and get together for a purchase. Fedex on your own (maybe $150) would be too steep but split multi-ways makes it very possible, you have to get the coffee ASAP for freshness otherwise it wouldn't be worth it.

Shouldn't that go in 'The really bad boards stuff' thread?

Best thing for me about boards is the honesty of people who use the site.
It's what makes it so approachable for both newbies and old timers alike.

Dont forget the Boards soccer team Boardeaux who play every tuesday in a league and are having a friendly against the poker forum on sunday.

The BGRH beers which have lead to a beers in Germany in March

there are hundreds of great things about the site, i say ban all the mod moaners, it should be an instant ban IMO

The simple fact that I'm able to read the opinions of lots of intelligent people who know a lot about subjects that I don't.

Didn't you meet your squeeze through Boards? I would think that would be among the good boards stuff for a few people.

Had one member come all the way from Oslo to Tokyo to hold the first Buddhist Beers Night.
Other traveling Boardsies are planing to visit Tokyo too and we will meet.
And most best for me, having lived away from Dublin for 25 years in Tokyo, Boards makes me feel connected to home and in touch.
    Long live Boards.ie

    The LTI forum.
Actually started a thread there last night to thank all of those who helped me and for others to thank those who helped them.

Also AH. I spent about 2 hours cleaning up crap and banning people before I had a chance to read it last night, but it still cracks me up.

Also also, the ego boost when I was awarded mod of the year.

The photo book, the football team and the drama group who will be putting on a play soon!

    Too many to list really.

As has been said already, the great advice that you get. Boards is like that parent you can turn too that seems to know everything. I found answers to such questions as 'What camera should I buy?' to 'Where can I get a chimney sweep?'.

I can't remember how I found the answers to akward questions prior to boards.

Photo forum usually does something at least once a month, from pubs to adventures, seminars, studios and all sorts.

It also had the book project, and is working on an exhibition.

^That reminds me. I managed to book a photographer on Boards with about 2 hours notice and he didn't even charge me a cent for his services. :)

The bargain alerts forum has meant that myself and a group of 12 friends who don't get out enough together as a group are going to Liverpool on a session. (Ryanair's €1 flights)
Never got so many thanks from my friends for organising a trip :D Cheers boards!

People's willingness to help never fails to astonish me. In the 3 or 4 years that I've been actively using boards, I've asked questions about DIY issues to technology issues to food issues etc. People are always willing to take the time to write out really long, helpful replies and that amazes me. If you have an immediate issue, people are willing to stick with you in a thread throughout an afternoon to get it sorted etc. In the Cooking & Recipes forum, posters will transcribe huge recipes for others. In PI, people practically write essays full of some of the best advice I've ever read!

So basically, the users make boards what it is for me, and I give them all a huge round of applause.
