Since I've gotten BB in my new house I've been having issues. I've been emailing and talking to BT trying to solve the issue and every time they give me a different reason. The latest one being contention ratio in the evenings.
I'm currently on BT option 3, I've been on all the packages at this stage checking.
With BT option 3 is the contention not set to 20:1?
Is there anything I can do or say to help or get out of the contract? I'm getting about half a meg in the evening and about 700ping.
    Line stats are:

    Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 6144 Kbps 384 Kbps
Noise Margin 16.6 dB 17.0 dB
Line Attenuation 32.0 dB 16.5 dB
Output Power 0.1 dBm 8.4 dBm

    Cheers Phil

    Getting the same problems.

AFAIK the contention is the same as eircoms , i.e 48:1 which indeed is terrible.

The isp only guarantees the advertised speed on the line before it hits the DSLAM and after that contention kicks in once it has been filtered onto the digital exchange box

You should post some traceroutes of some servers such as eircom.net ETC and post them back here to determine if the problem is on your local exchange or further down the line

XP - Start run type "cmd" in the prompt that appears type "tracert www.boards.ie"

    Without the "" of course.

On vista the prompt is found in accessories but right click it and run as administrator before you do it.

EDIT : Sorry i misread your post, on the 7MB + - Packages i believe the contention is 24:1

I had BB from BT for 18 months before giving up on them. Was getting down time at least once a week . Their tech support always blamed my end. Contention is a pain. If Smart is available I 'd recommend you consider switching. I am on 6 meg connection but nearly always get download speeds of up to 1100kbps

I've traced before to Irish servers and some times I get like 14 hops.

It really is a bit of I joke, I mean I'm in Carlow town not that out of the way. Guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed!

problem is on your first hop obviously the rest of the hops dont seem to cause major increases

you should test 2 machines to be sure but it looks like your local exchange is overloaded with congestion causing the ping times..

Last at night 12+ Are the pings and download speeds ok?

ye it's grand in the middle of the night and in the mornings. Same on any of the other machines. Guess there's no time when any of this will be sorted :S?

i have posted letters and numerous phonecalls over the past 3 months and still havent been notified when the problem will be fixed ( Eircom Customer )

I wouldnt hold my breath if i were you

Ringing them is the first step ( of many )

Ye been on at the phone or email to BT most weeks at this stage.
Anyway cheers for the help, I'll just keep annoying them. Had the same with eircom over the summer in a different house and ended up with with free BB for a while!

What would be the best way to make a complaint to BT, post?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,631 ✭✭✭✭Hank Scorpio

Posting a written letter is probably the most effective way, but the problem is BT needed to contact Eircom to make any changes to the network

BT are only reselling Eircoms DSL after all so im not sure what kind of an impact it will have

Is NTL available in carlow or smart? I go to college there myself but havent seen it advertised around the town much

    Worth a go!
If only I was so lucky, na their not. Dont really have the money to terminate the contract anyway.

can you try to do the tracert first thing in the morning when the speeds are a better ?

Im with Chorus/UPC on their 10mb line 99% of the time its great the only time there any problems is when they workin on the lines nearby i would reccomend them in the Cork area anyway i dont know anyone whos happy with Eircom or Esat.
I do a good bit of online gaming and the latency times are always very low too.
I only get broadband from Chorus/UPC no tv or anything they charge me extra cause i only take broadband they are stingy f***ers

Ye I'll do one later when it goes back to normal and post it up. Cheers for all the help.
Ye heard pretty good things about them, but i guess its all down to where you are!

Sorry for the bump, dont want to make a new thread.

Just wondering, seen as I'm on BT option 3 with a contention of 24:1, can they really blame my problem on contention. Getting 1.5megs and pings of 500ms!?

    cheers Phil

I've heard all 7.6/10/12 products are now 12:1 since last week. So you should start shouting at the top of your voice about contention being a pile of ****e.

I have heard nothing about this. I think you might be talking a pile of ****e...
