last time i was in leo burdocks (christ church) it was pretty special... lovely fresh chips and a nice fresh peice of smoked cod... now i did have about 10pints in me... so that may have been a fator...

but in general i would say Café Ciara in howth does the best fish+chips in all the land.

Burdocks are not that great IMO.

    +1 for Howth

If that is the Cafe near the Pier I would agree.
I asked the Italian fellow "do you use frozen cod" He gave me a really dirty look.

Anyway, When it was ready it was one of the best fish / chip ever.

I think by in large, chippers are fairly consistent in their products, they're an odd couple of awful ones and an odd couple of great ones. The best ones, in my opinion are:

Beshoff's of Howth for Fresh cod and chips or scampi and chips.
Fingal Cafe Swords for Snackbox (but the fresh cod is also great)
Burdocks of Christchurch for the Fresh cod and chips.

Liberos - Deansgrange, the standard to work from.
All things considered I'll give it a 7

Ironbar - I have respect for that, you do not deviate from what you know to be good fine dining. Stick with it

My Top 3 on the Southside
    1. Bistro Clanbrassil St
    2.Fusco's Meath St
    3. Beshoffs in Howth

Leo Burdocks (Christ Church) has gone way down hill over the years.:(

My favourite thing about Burdock's is the list of famous people who have eaten there - every second name spelled incorrectly. Love it!

By the way, Howth is on the Northside.

Beshoffs is a rip off. Cafe Caira is way better for taste & value.

if the chipper across from the dart station is still there, (its called irelands eye) they are nicer than cafe ciara

The kingfisher on parnell st, is by far better than any where around city center.

I'm surprised people are saying Burdocks has gone downhill. Granted it's been 5 years since I had a fish and chips from there but it was fantastic the few times that I did.

Agree with Café Ciara in Howth - great fish'n'chips.

Another mention for Lido on Pearse Street. Great fresh cod and chips!

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

Agreed about the Lido - it's a great option when you're craving chips.

Are there any chippers in Dublin that are a little left of centre? I'm thinking of KCs in Douglas, Cork that do a lot of flavoured burgers, chips etc.

Burdocks is overated. Its a pile of grease.
    Agree with that.

I was amazed at how poor the quality was when I first got a takeaway in the Phibsboro branch last year.

I had heard good things, but the grub we got was worse than you'd get from a chipper van.

Seems like I'm going to have to go and try the Kingfisher soon. Sounds nice.
