Buying 3G PAYG Iphone in Belfast - unlock and use down south - possible?

I'm vaguely thinking of upgrading my 1st gen Iphone to a 3G now that they can be unlocked etc. So in theory what I'd do is go up north, buy one on PAYG and then jailbreak / unlock it for use down south. Yes, I've done it for a friend O2 UK -> Vodafone Ire, everything works fine.
