I have NTL ISP, scientific Atlanta cable modem with good, stable internet connection via ethernet port.

Long story I have installed temporary, known working, Linksys WRPT54G wireless VOIP router cos of suspected problem with another linksys router that kept seemingly dropping internet connection. (interconnect cables are verfied good)

Router "Internet" indicator on temporary router is ON and stable (thats an improvement!) I have successful wireless connection to the router from two laptops however without data transfer, i.e. no internet connectivity.

I can log into router. Does anyone have an exact script for correct basic and advanced settings to interface with NTL on set up screens etc ... DHCP , MTU?

Im aware of NTL premium support service. Any value in contacting them re router settings? (Easy on the ranting. I wanna fix my router here not NTL support ;-) )

    Any other ideas?

Using a wireless router with an ntl modem is usually very simple all you need to do in my experience is make sure dhcp is on.

OK I have read boards sticky now :-)

I fail at step (d) below wich suggests problem is between router and internet connection BUT I have a good connection over same CAT5 cable at ethernet (internet) port of modem. Baffled !!

With the IP config test I noticed that laptop has IP routing is not enabled. Is that a problem?

    a) Open a command prompt. Start->run->cmd.
    b) In the command prompt type ipconfig /all. If your ip address under your wireless card is 169.254.xx.xxx or 0.0.0.0 then the problem is that you are not being assigned an ip address by your router. If not, note the ip address listed for "Gateway" and move to step c).
    c) If there is no ip address listed for "Gateway" then this is your problem. If there is an ip listed, type ping x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the ip listed for the gateway. If this ping times out, then the problem is that you do not have a valid connection to your router. If you do get a response to the ping, then the connection between your PC and rotuer is fine, so move to step d).
    d) Type ping 66.102.9.104. If the ping times out then the problem is between your router and internet connection. If you get a response, move to step e).
    e) Type ping www.google.ie. If this times out then the problem is that your dns servers are not configured.

Thanks DUB . DHCP is definitely enabled.

and have you made sure there is no fixed ip on the laptop?

I believe so ... Checked TCP/IP settings. Set to obtain IP address and DNS server addresses automatically .. Any other IP checks ?

Is MAC address filtering turned on on the Linksys?

can you paste the results of ipconfig /all here please also?

Thanks Dub, Crawler for ongoing help.

Your problem is your DNS server on your wireless. It shouldn't be set to your gateway's ip. It should be coming up as UPC's DNS servers. It's probably a problem with your WAN settings.

Thanks for inputs. Have cracked it with pointers on MAC from Dub etc and reading more Stickies. Maybe I will understand how DNS relates to Mac another time

For my small mind it's all about the MAC address from now on.

Resetting cable modem with everything disconnected (router/wired laptop) clears out MAC address held in modem.

Connecting router up to live modem and starting up router captures MAC (?) or allows modem to assign IP address to router. Bingo.. data transfer, VOIP working also.

Boards remains better than any support organisation.

    From Boards Sticky:

    7) Can I use a wireless router with my NTL modem?

Yes. Connect the NTL modem to the wireless router's WAN port and set the router to receive an ip via DHCP. This should be all you need to do to get it working. However, the problem most people experience is the fact that most cable companies use IP provisioning.

This means that the NTL modem provisions an IP address to the first Ethernet MAC address the device “sees” or is connected to. That MAC address will be written to the internal table of the cable modem and that MAC address will always be able to connect to the provider network. Given that only one entry in the table is allowed, to connect a new or different user device to the provider network, the entry within the cable modem table must be updated.

Most cable modems accomplish this table updating by simply powering off the cable modem. As an example, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) cable modem plants follow this protocol. The time a cable modem must be powered off varies amongst cable modems. In most cases, however, powering off the cable modem for ten minutes performs a full clearing of the internal MAC address table. Once the table is cleared, a new user device can be connected to the cable modem. The new user device will populate the MAC address table in the cable modem and receive an IP address from the provider.

Other cable modems do not release their IP addresses upon cable-modem reset. Instead, they require that a user gracefully release the IP address from any device that has been provisioned with an IP address. To accomplish this task, the user must engage the winipcfg utility (for Win9x and Millennium PCs) or type (from a command prompt) ipconfig /release for Windows NT, 2000 and XP based PCs.

Therefore if you want to add a router to your network, you need to update the MAC address table by the above method in order to get the router's MAC address in place of the PC you originally connected.

Good stuff well done.....great when people keep at it and solve the issue themselves from pointers - also makes future trouble shooting easier on yourself :)

Cheers. it was the pointers that got me looking in the right places.

Next step is getting new Airport Express connectivity stable for streaming music or using it as an access point.

Just added homemade cable and a switch to the router for the rear of the house eliminating useful but useful powerline adapters.
