Actually, we could just remove the thanks system from soccer.

If the other soccer mods agree we can do that.

tbh I think this is one of the reasons the soccer forum isnt great. The users dont seem to have much say in what rules are put in place/what could be done to change it. It just seems to be done all between the mods and the users have zero input. While you will say your open too feedback I really doubt the feedback actually goes anywhere.

Thank you for taking the time to answer the question in my post.

I'm only going on what has been posted in this thread.

It mightnt be correct, but It's gotten the attention of the mods hasnt it? So because some people martyr'd themselves on this issue your going to completely ignore there complaints about the "thanks" issue?

    Not true.

For a long time images were not allowed in the forum for one reason or another. After the place calmed down the users requested that image posting abilities be restored. The mods took it on board, went to the powers that be, and now we have threads with lovely gifs and shiny photoshopped images.

That was long before I became a mod btw, and no doubt there are more examples.

    Again, did I say that?

I am much more inclined to take on board a post like this -
Based on this thread and the bannings etc personally I think removing the Thanks system for the soccer forum is the sensible thing to do

There are too many ambiguities and potential for misunderstandings and misuse

    than one like this -

Tbh aside from a small core of decent posters in the soccer forum I wouldn't think much of a lot of the soccer forum users anyway.
Most seem to not have a fulfilling day without starting off some row.
While some do it jokingly, there's far too many who troll.
If it didn't make threads hard to read I'd have a lot of posters on Ignore...

I cant argue with this, there are some complete gobs****e posters in there. It's not possible to cull them unfortunatly but maybe having something like a off topic thunderdome thread where people can post whatever they like once it isnt personnel abuse towards a fellow member? That way it might keep all the stupid Over the top liverpool vs man utd vs chelsea vs Arsenal vs PL is **** and La liga is great vs LOI fans vs "barstool" fans bull**** out of good threads?

Umm of the 9 Revolutionaries it appears that only 5 of them had access to soccer to begin with, the other four just enjoy street theatre.

Of those 5, 1 said he hadn't seen this thread and "forgot" the rules nd 2 of the other four appear to have been doing it because I was involved.

We have well over 2000 soccer posters.

I think its a bit silly to ban people who thanked the post initally, i was reading the thread and pissed myself laughing when i saw the post and who posted it because of their obvious fame of doing such things. I mean after Pighead was banned(which was fair enough if it was intended as abuse and he admitted it) I don't recall the post being altered to say that the particular comment was abusive, just the post below by a mod. I mean technically somebody could be scrolling the page get to the post, read it and think it was in jest(which for most soccer fans would) and thank it and perhaps in scroll away from the page before they saw that an infraction had been meated out. It sounds very technical and anal but i think its just as anal as the banning of the original 6.

If i was in the 6 i would appeal on this ground and on a technicality be quite confident that in a fair place it would be lifted.

The problem is this isnt the first multi page thread in feedback about the rules. So maybe people felt that it would only take something drastic to help it?

In fairness, the post was made at 3.02am. I infracted him at 3.05am. The red card was there for all to see. I think maybe only one person had thanked the post before the card appeared. So even if they somehow missed the nicely bolded warning underneath they would definitely have seen the red card on the post.

I am one of the 6 and started the thread. I agree with what you have said and thought common sense would prevail but obviously not.

What one do I fall under? Enjoy street theatre? Bull****. Neil & and Mike were both goood posters in the soccer forum, it's a bit insulting on them to say they just did this for the entertainment.

ur banning those guys was totoally power freakish and wrong, the sooner u relise that the better

you have mods who start whatever they want about there own club but when someelse does it its a instant lock

    total farce about that forum

oh yea and no offence intended

Ah but iirc the post in question wasn't altered, the post below this indicated he was banned. People can be scrolling down with their web browser, get to the post which i did and stop-thank the post because they thought it was in jest then maybe not proceed to scroll down the page to see a ban had been handed out. Now you might say that its common sense to continue scrolling the page but you cannot be sure that they continue to read on to the next post in the thread, they could navigate of for a multitude of reasons. I'm been technical here but if the person didn't know the post was a abusive one and thought for what most clearly did that it was in jest, then they wouldn't know that adding their thanks would get a banning(in clear knowledge of the forum rules regardless of what they think of the rule).

p.s whats the point in appealing

afaik no1s ban has ever been overtturned here as theres always a "motive.legit" reason for the mod to ban them, at the end of the day your wrong and the mod is right so dont even bother posting.

Is this not back seat modding ?

While you make a valid point about not scrolling down, can you explain not seeing the red card which was there from 3 minutes after the post was made?

In fairness they discussed it in this thread and knew what they were doing

They knew they would be banned and did it anyway

And they didn't do it to make a point or a protest, the did it for a laugh

i wont post in the soccer forum anymore is all im saying :)

there seems to be plenty of banter slagging insulting but i posted one comment and was warned, while more vigerous , insulting comments were deemed thumbs up and exciting

its not properly run at all and there is no dividing line of what you can/cannot post

also if a moderator bans 13 people for hitting a thanks button in a sarcastic way that kinda sums up my analyis of that forum.... enjoy

  • Registered Users Posts: 83,235 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

People who gained access to the soccer forum agreed to abide by the rules

The soccer forum was a mess a few years ago and strict moderation is required to stop it from being shut down again

People go on about the place being no craic, well it was people and their opinion on what craic was (which was basically flaming and trolling) who got the place closed down in the first place
Why not just agree to make Soccer a Hosted forum, or Host an alternative Soccer Forum, run by new HMods?

I'm going to be anal here and say this. How do you know that a person didn't simply log into the page before the red card was placed on the post(between 3.02 and 3.05), then proceeded to leave their computer for a few minutes(perhaps for a beverage). When i'm on boards.ie the pages it view never automatically refresh themselves and if i left a page for a couple of hours would remain the same when i returned. They could have then thanked when they read it, then proceeded to log away from the page without further reading of the thread or the post they had just thanked.

I explicity stated I didn't see this thread, I made no such claim as to forgetfulness(with or without the quotation marks subtly infering deceitfulness), I simply never read that particular revised rule. I'm fully aware in all walks of life that igorance of the law is hardly an excuse to flaunt it, but as this thread is getting so painfully litigous and picky, i'd prefer if you didn't make inferences that aren't there, especially when you use them to backup your decisions.

I am quite happy with the forum as is, there are some trolls who I try and ignore but there is nothing excessive in it

If people want to go back to what I consider the bad old days there are forums out there that will facilitate them, I see no reason why Boards should host a forum (when it has the Thunderdome) which will exist so that people can abuse one another and the various clubs they support

Far fetched perhaps, but i believe in a fair and equitable court it would stand up and the punishments meated out would have to overturned.

    O and yes i am a lawyer

im not going to post any examples, any time iv done a similar thing there has been excuses layered upon excuses made and the moderator is always right.

Im not going to waste my time.

I like you xavi think your a good bloke and have a positive input into the soccer forum so im not going to argue with you.

However i have my own opinion about it and ill stick by it. Im post on my own behalf and i dont believe i need to prove anything to anyone if i believe it.

Going to bed now, sleep tight down under ;)
