hey guys, i got an ECU off a friend for my 106 gti last summer, it came out of a rally car that was set up for a track day. just wondering does anyone know of anywhere that i could get someone to plug it in and see whats been done to it and what setup it has. not planning on putting it in my current 106 but gonna get another one in the summer to tune up and might chance the ECU in it if it'd be okay. its the normal Magnetti Marelli ecu that comes in the 106 gti's. any help appreciated.

You would have to get a specialist to look at it. Its probably a rom tune so odds are someone reverse engineered the ECU and soldered a new rom in with an altered factory map to suit a heavily modified rally engine.

Odds are the rev limiter was set through the roof and the fuelling set-up for larger injectors with high lift cams. So the map will be completly useless to you and id be surprised if it even ran. (also a slight chance of causing damage if you drive on it)

I don't see you getting this working uness you have a lot of time on your hands and know how to use an eprom emulator to reverse engineer the ecus tables. (not easy)

Your best option would be to open the ecu see where its socketed. If the rom is removable see can you contact a specialist and get a genric chip or travel and get them to map it to suit your car.

Otherwise sell the ecu and get something standalone and have it mapped again to suit your car.

first thing you would wana do is maybe book into a rolling road for a few hours or so. maybe westward engineering or CDA, up to you where.

do a couple of runs on the standard ECU, let the tuner get to understand the standard car, standard fuel map, standard ignition map, standard detonantion if any and standard knock etc etc

then plug in the new ECU, and run it in slowly and looking at the maps in real time, not just the power changes but more importantly the revised fuel and ignition maps. dont want your car running lean and blowing now do we :D

you will then have a good idea if the ECU is worthwhile in your car, if its restricting your car or if you car has sufficient mods to compliment the "Trackday" ECU.

also you can search the GTi forums and see if the ECU you have is a common upgrade and if others have any experience with it and advice on how it should be ran on your car.

all of the above is my opinion and how i would go about it, so dont take it as fact.

be careful i had a 106 gti with the group n ecu and some cams. The extra power chewed 2 clutches and a gearbox so get both uprated or youl be broke!!

Martin in westward eng your best bet
