Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Working in the UK, so I don't get to cover many games, but on Saturday I covered the semi-final of the Dr. Tony O’Neill eircom League of Ireland Under-20 League.
Cork City FC beat Dundalk 1-3 at Oriel Park, Dundalk, in the middle of a hurricane!

Can't remember the last time I was so cold and wet, but it was worth it to get out and shoot football again.

    Here's some of the action...

Great shots, as always. Looks like it certainly was horrible weather.

    Cheers Paulw.

The wind was so strong that I actually struggled to hold the camera upright.
At one point I thought the pylon for the floodlights was going to come down on top of me. Anyone watching the news on Saturday will appreciate what damage the weather caused.

The only reason the game could go ahead was due to the fact that Dundalk have a plastic pitch. It's quite comfortable to sit on. :)

great shots, fair play to you for bearing those conditions.

Given the weather, the pitch looks immaculate.

One advantage, I guess. Then again, wouldn't you miss that cold wet feeling of sitting on real grass??? :D

Then again, the Storm Force case makes a great seat.

    It's plastic! ;)

Oh it's cold and wet alright, but it's spongy, so it's not as hard as some of the grass pitches get in the summer.
    It's actually quite impressive!
They need to dig it all up again though, to comply with some FIFA regulation, now that they're in the Premier Division.
Not sure what change they have to make.

I always love the rain effects that you guys get in the Footy/Rugby shots.
    #1 #2 and #5 for me.
#2 is especially good for the action of the Cork guy grabbing the shirt of the other player
#3 and #4 cropped too tightly, especially #4 which is a pity because great expressions of happiness for goal celebrations I assume.

You'll have to take that up with Canon, because I don't determine the crop factor on the 40D :p

Those shots were only cropped on the sides.
The rest is the action coming in on top of me, filling the frame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

Do you mean the layout of the af points?
I've had problems doing normal photos because of this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

No, I mean that those shots aren't cropped tightly!
    The action filled the frame.
If there was more space around the action, I'd have left it in.
I think shot 3 isn't cropped in any way, post process.
That's the way the shot was on the camera.

Check out the leg muscles on the guy in number 4!

    Mmmm bit confused now..
If u used pattern the top of ya mans head who is at top of photo would not be part of the focus points?
The issue of af points I was alluding too was that the 40D or 5DII do not cover enough of the 'frame'

Great stuff City.. Top marks for braving the elements.. Never easy to shoot in such terrible conditions and you got some cracking shots.. 1 & 4 really highlight the shocking weather..

I'd guess that the centre focus point only was being used for these shots. That's the common focus point used for sport. You generally wouldn't have all focus points enabled, or else your camera may focus on a background subject.

City Exile was doing what he said in another thread which was keep shooting until they're right on top of you. Same with the game on Friday night for me, kept shooting and most of the shots only have a bare crop on mine.

Edit: Nice shots Peadar, I'm sure I'll see ya around soon :)

point taken, when I am on desktop later will check the focus, hard to tell on I phone resolution.
I assume outer guys should be a tad OOF then between only centre AF been used and wide open app been used?

Just double checked your shots in your thread and they are all cropped fine...
    You guys are confusing me.

    Where is the confusion?

The players got so close that they wouldn't fit completely into the frame. They weren't cropped after.

Nothing to do with focus points or metering modes.

Yeah, I can't really follow his point either.

SmellTheGlove, that's our Under 20 team, so I'd say they're all a bit too young for you! :p

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Well I've always told you one motto.

I know THAT feeling all too well.

Where would we be without that? Mind you, at the ASJI AGM today, was talking to a Galway photographer who says the industry is getting tougher and tougher, with the economic environment.
