Have you met him before ?
Have you checked the cars history out, finance owing, scrapped etc?
Are you using cash or a draft?
Did you view the car at his home?
Check hi insurance/tax/nct certs.make sure they are all for the same car.

Transfer of owner form from the Garda station to do at exchange.

What you need to do is is sign the back of the log book (taxbook/vlc), as the new owner. Fill your name and address and the date of sale onto the back of this.

Make sure everything matches up with the car. Check the service history etc. Is the car forsale online?

i'll presume its registered post 1993
you will sign the VLC document(vehicle registration document) fill out all your details and the seller will sign it too.
check all numbers on the VLC that the correspond to the car
    registration number
VIN(chassi number) - probably on the lower windscreen
engine number - this could be anywhere on the engine but you dont say what car it is so nobody can say

He/she sends it to the Department of Transport, Shannon Co.Clare. It can take up to 6 weeks for it to come to you then.

Depending on how much your spending it's usually worth running a history check on the car as was mentioned above, you can do this on www.cartell.ie or www.carcheck.ie and I am sure there's other sites too. It will tell you if there is finance outstanding or if the car has been written off or reported stolen. I also would be very careful to be sure the person you are buying from is the registered owner of the car, verify this by asking them for ID, if they are not the registered owner and the car is stolen you will have the car repossessed.

Don't rush into buying a car the same day you go to view it, if you like the car then agree a price and ask the seller to hold it for you by giving them a small deposit. Make sure to have a mechanic inspect the car especially when buying private prior to buying. Take a day or two to make up your mind and then proceed with the purchase.
