Its an observation in response to another post which is itself a reply to a post about the false economy of diesels, real down the rabbit hole stuff.

that said the original article should be filed away for use the next time some muppet suggests putting a diesel conversion in a classic to save a few bob

My point exactly - IF you had a smashed diesel GTD Golf for example, and you had a Passat B1 with a 1300 engine, and plenty of time, it would make an interesting conversion, and possibly be quicker off the mark. But to buy say a Caprice 454 7.4L V8 and then consider putting in diesel with all the hassle and time wasted just to 'save' on running costs would be mad, but that's the attitude of some in Ireland - they just see one 'saving', not the overall cost of the project. (Bit like those who go to the UK to 'save' on the cost of buying a motor here, IF you take - days off work / ferry and travel/hotel expenses, and the possibility that Revenue might actually charge you more than you thought - is it still a 'bargain' ?? :o )

(Saw a chap in the US comparing putting an ad on Craigslist and on Autotrader - no response from autotrader ad in 2 weeks, sold off Craigslist in 4 days - wonder who's on top for sales here DD / Advers.ie / Gumtree / Carzone ?? )

I would say its done deal, in the last few years of car buying at home I have bought 2 cars off adverts, but the rest of the family have bought and sold 9 cars on DD.
I'd say thats a repeating pattern nationally.

currently there are 803 classic listings on adverts, a lot of which are listings for services, and 1792 listings on done deal, mostof which are actual vehicles

    DoneDeal link: /vintagecars-for-sale/mercedes-w123-e230/7744333
(can't post the full URL, gee, thanks Boards!)

Went to see the car yesterday.
It's a mid-spec, early 1982, 230E with steel rims, hubcaps and cloth interior.

It's a reasonably recent re-spray, but poorly executed with overspray galore (e.g. paint smudges on door trim, or hardened overflow on door bottoms). Doors and sills look healthy enough, except the driver side front lever point which has rust bubbles around it. There's one small sealant crack on the passenger side sill, around the B-pillar, and there's some rust underneath. The rear wheel arches need work as mentioned in the ad, and so does the left trunk floor (not much, but still).

The driver side hood hinge is held in place by its spring only, and the mount point has rusted out around the hinge shaft. In the other corner, there's a approx. 25x25mm rust-through opposite the hinge mount point. Floors, including carpets, looked dry and healthy but then again it hasn't rained and there's the infamous MB sound deadening - it's an uncertainty top side. Bottom side floor panels appeared in good order, without any suspect bubbling or cracks on the sealant.

The engine bay is generally the low point of the car, and the engine in particular. It has serious blow-by, so much actually that as soon as you lift the oil cap it us spurting oil all over the rocker cover. It's also leaking under the rocker cover seal, which is more likely than not due to the overpressure. It's either the valve stem seals, or piston rings. A compression test should give a definite answer.

Oil pressure at idle, on a warm engine, was at the M102 spec low point of 0.3bar. Given the blow-by and this, my hopes for the longevity of that engine are not high. There's also a leak around the transmission oil pan seal. The exhaust manifold needs new gaskets, as mentioned in the ad.

The inside was quite good but dirty. Should come around nicely with a few hours of careful cleaning. Wood trim looked OK. Haven't checked any of the interior equipment for correct operation.

I've checked the car on cartell.ie and it comes back clean, including mileage (~182k miles). Haven't checked the accompanying documentation.

I haven't driven the car, giving up on it as soon as I've seen the blow-by, so no opinion on that part. The seller was happy to give me as much time as I needed for the inspection, and basically left me to it - major thumbs up on that part, as it's fairly uncommon.

Not really a bargain with that asking price, but probably negotiable.

This one's up for sale again - looks like it didn't sell last time.

I've always wanted one but lacked the courage to buy one I could afford and the money to buy a good one.... Starting to think life is too short not to though...

These have been around for years. Sean Newman in Ashbourne drove these and many other American beasts (both ugly and beautiful ) when it wasn't cool to do so. Does anyone remember Hayes on Hill St in Dublin.?💲

I KNOW they've been around for years, had 2 myself (*%$*£ to do the spark plugs on  ) , but what this guy seems to be promoting is the 70's -ness of them, nevermind that most won't touch them because they're not 'daysel'

Joe HEADON was 'the man' in US cars here up on Hill St , remember he sold me a Valiant wagon telling me 'the brakes need doin' ' - bl**ding vise grip crimping the flexihose :D He had a huge stock of spares up in the attic if you needed something - but it'd take all day rummiging to find what you wanted

Not sure if this classes as a 'bargain' at nearly €70k but it would tempt you into taking a second look at the few in half decent shape left around the place as seems like the value is skyrocketing. Sold at auction for €41K only 2 weeks ago.......and she not an original reg. But still, shes in great nick

^ Definitely not a 'she'; could not look more macho - apart from the colour (what shade of yellow is that? It does not match my overall theme).

Do she float? Do she be a boat? A female goat? Be she in foal, or in calf? Be ye a cap'n - even a scurvy lad?

'She' better be the 'it' I want (very much) before I call and say she/her with abandon. I would normally use gender-neutral terms as much as possible, like: the engine, the body, the wheels/tyres, the handling; the brakes.

But if I wanted 'her', I could be as much a throwback as the seller. "What will you let 'her' go at?" and guff like that.

To me, only (and even then only maybe) a boat is female. Aaaarrrgh! :D

The 'value' is not skyrocketing, someone's hoping to flip it and make €28k - the 'Tiger' is back with a bang again . Even if I had my €84million Euromillions win , I WOULD NOT pay that for a BJ/FJ40 and the old saying of 'Fools and their money.....' springs to mind here for this BJ40

Agreed. It actually sold for 42k plus 10% buyers fee. It is believed that McCabes spent 68K having it restored. http://www.lcoc.ie/showthread.php?299-Restored-Bj-40

He maybe waiting a long time to get near the asking price

A lot of these 'dealers' seem to think the bling times never went away - 'leave it there and some fool will show up'

    Capri,
i was about to comment that the USA Jensen was cheap, that that amount would not restore one, then I noticed ,the 17k $ was only the current bid!!

    Beautiful though

Yeah, too many owners forget the basics. The Syncro has a plastic fuel tank in the rear over the transmission and all the breathers are routed across the top and get blocked very easily and blow backs and tank pressure are common, plus these vehicles are getting old!

I reckoned he wasn't Irish because nobody here would start a business selling petrol V8 vans - good luck to him, but don't say he wasn't warned about the 'Daysel or nuttin' ' attitude here.

I know, had a 99 6.6TD Suburban , it's still around along with a diesel Seville - same guy, Mihai, owned both at one time. Bought the Sub off me, and imported the Seville from US (it's for sale ATM )
