Did they fit header tanks to the old A60s?

I ask because the tank in the underbonnet photo looks remarkably like the petrol tank from a lawnmower!

It would be a sensible way to get it running TEMPORARILY on clean petrol from a small fuel reservoir rather than introducing dirt from the permanent tank and lines.

Can't say this seller is hiding anything - plenty of photos from every angle, a video would complete the picture

That snot green Zappo and the red one over here are both kid-on 1973 as they are both 968Ms (from 1980>)

    From Wiki -
In 1979, the 968 series was replaced by the modernized 968M. Prototyped in 1977, it had the "ears" removed and replaced much of the chrome exterior with black plastic.968M front fascia design was copied from the 1974 Skoda 100 L. Its interior design was also upgraded, featuring a closed-space glovebox and a slightly more modern dashboard. It was offered with either the MeMZ 968E (40 hp (30 kW; 41 PS), carbureted, low-compression for 76-octane fuel); 968GE (40 hp (30 kW; 41 PS), dual carburettor); or the MeMZ 968BE (50 hp (37 kW; 51 PS), 8.4:1 compression, for 93-octane). Instead of the side-mounted "ears", the hood lid and rear quarter panels were louvered.

The 968M is the most contemporary Zaporozhets model and also spent the most time in production, spanning a career from 1979 to 1 June 1994

This is up in DD Cars for Sale and not as you might expect in the Vintage and Classic section.

It looks really well but the 72 reg is a bit of a conundrum. I wonder was it "old stock" or a re-reg.

Rare enough, only produced for 2 years, 66-68

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_420_and_Daimler_Sovereign_(1966%E2%80%9369)#Differentiation

Probably brought over on a change of residence in 72 (ZD) and treasured ever since.

I think we can take it from the ad that the seller isn't 'one of us' (enthuiasts) because the wording and placement of the ad shows little knowledge of the cars potential

Another 'rare' car from this dealer, a '2.6 Focus' http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-focus-2-6-litre-diesel/8322609?offset=20

Phone kits, don't get me started  Had factory one on my Merc, but wasn't compatible with the Nokia I had, or anything since

Just bought a suction phone holder for €10 and when phone rings just hit the 'loudspeaker' button ;)

As for drilling it, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt but MAYBE theres a hidden bracket holding the main phone holder - MAYBE !

You dont have to these days. You can buy retro radios with modern internals and some have Bluetooth so you just link your smartie to the radio.

And we think we have problems importing/registering stuff

    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/4852072836.html
.........Legal in every state (as far as I know) except CA-- it will pass the Smog Referee as soon as it receives 4 new catalytic converters (the original Mustang configuration-- and they won't grandfather it even though it was converted 20 years ago. Oh well, I tried.)

Refined, powerful, fun. Runs like a chicken with the Colonel after it. Cops and teenage racers don't even notice it. I'm really going to miss this car, but the truth is I simply don't have any place/time to work on it. There are still some things I would do, it needs minor TLC (the power windows are sluggish from lack of exercise, and the power door lock wiring is chaffed so I disconnected it...), some rust touchup where the roof rack was, some paint to cover the typical psoriasis on the upper surfaces. It's been waiting for me to finish it for too many years, with a boatload of new parts I haven't even installed yet: fuel pump, struts, low-dust brake pads...

It needs to be enjoyed by someone before the tires rot. I know I'll never get back the $10k+ I've put into it, and $6k would be quite reasonable if the exhaust system were complete, but I just can't do the job right now. Asking $4k seems fair, given the as-is situation. However, life changes, motivated seller, open to all offers. I would happily drive this anywhere in the country. Someone is going to get themselves a steal.

Documentation, diagrams, photos... as thick as an encyclopedia, and if for some reason that's not enough info for the new owner, I'll happily answer any questions.

EDIT: Thanks for all the emails, I see I was not clear. Because this car still has FL tags, it will require a VIN inspection at the DMV when it enters the CA system-- which is normally a standard procedure for a DMV employee. However, due to the dashboard change and engine change, those two items don't match the remaining VIN tags all over the car (door, pillar, radiator, trunk...) so the special form actually has to be filled out by CHP. They do inspections once/week, by appointment. I think their goal is to make sure it wasn't put together with a bunch of stolen parts. I do have a receipt for the engine from the previous owner.

While it's true that a CA diesel doesn't require smog testing, if you think you're gonna take a 5.0 Mustang to the CHP and tell 'em it's really still a diesel, good luck. Even if you pull the wool over their eyes once, the first time you go roaring past any officer in a car that he full well knows doesn't usually behave that way, he has the right to stop you and ask to see your Smog Referee paperwork. (And you should know that any engine change without telling the authorities is illegal, though CA seems to enforce it more strictly than anywhere else.)

By far the simplest solution would have been to leave this car in FL, but I didn't know that.

Based on my research and numerous appointments talking with officials, it IS possible to be legal in CA... and it's tempting, because this car is extremely close-- it requires merely the addition of the Ford Mustang air cleaner box (I found one) and Ford Mustang headers (I found a pair) and then someone fabricating an exhaust system with a pre-cat and a cat in each bank (in the same configuration as the original Mustang H-pipe.) Good Magnaflow cats are available for a total of ~$500, complete with the necessary "CARB Legal" stamping numbers on them (very crucial, in the eyes of those who wrote the law.) Obviously, replacing headers requires lifting the engine, due to tight fit. From everything I've read, installing a factory unmolested Right-Side header (without dimpling it for clearance, that's against the law) requires a small amount of massaging of the frame rail with a sledge hammer. None of this is impossible for those who have a garage and tools. But I don't. I haven't been truly able to enjoy working on any car since I sold my place in FL, and it's just plain frustrating to see this beautiful toy rotting away while I "hope to get around to it someday."

If the new owner wants to register in CA, the following plan would be 100% legit: make an appointment with CHP for a VIN verification, take the car to them (and the signed title, of course, and tell them you just bought it from out of state), they will verify which VIN is the "real" one-- but since the door pillar, door, underhood, and undertrunk numbers all match the one on the FL title, that shouldn't be a problem. I have a new piece of sheet metal for the rusty radiator support-- it's even in the original color of Redwood Metallic-- but I would suggest you take that to the CHP and tell them you want to replace the radiator support number, show them the piece, and make sure they note it on their files. Once that official paper is signed, take the car home and park it. Then go to the DMV with your official CHP-signed affidavit (they won't need to see the car because they trust the CHP paperwork) and register it as "Title only" -- which incidentally is way cheaper -- by the way, the term is "non-op" only if it already had CA tags. This will give you time to fix it. (Unless you can accomplish the whole process within the 10 days that DMV requires you to notify them that you just purchased a vehicle.) Fit the exhaust system, make sure everything is still functioning (heck, buy me a drink and I'll help you test it-- that's both easy and fun for me), then make an appointment with the Smog Referee for an Engine Change verification. (Get a one-day pass from the DMV for permission to drive to the smog test.) The ref will go over the whole thing with a fine-tooth comb, make sure all official components on all official diagrams are installed and functioning. He'll officially sniff the tailpipe, officially charge you $8.25 to send the official certificate to the state (it's amazing that he doesn't charge for the official sniff, to tell you the truth), and finally generate an official bar code to officially attach to the driver's door pillar so that from this point forward, ANY smog shop can officially do future tests by simply scanning the bar code. Then you go back to the DMV with a totally clean conscience and pay the additional fee to change it from Non-Op to regular, at which point you'll get a CA license plate, and of course at which point you'll need proof of insurance also.
Or else call up a buddy who lives in a more car-friendly state and tell him there's a really cool Toybox for sale. :)

Sure to jaysus, in this day and age what kit do people need, any decent stereo has bluetooth handsfree connect on it, and any decent phone regardless of make can use it. There was a kit on my car, I took a load of garbage wiring out of the centre console when I got new stereo fitted 6+ years back.

Bus PLUS a limo co. in Hawaii for $220,000 and 'embroidered Tommy Bahama drivers uniforms' :o

This is a golden opportunity knocking on your door. The question is, are you going to answer?

For sale is the world’s only 1965 Volkswagen stretch microbus . . . with 33-windows and a ragtop sunroof. This bus was built by a VW-only restoration shop in Southern California for use as a limousine on the island of Maui, Hawaii. It can hold up to 12 passengers. This one-of-a-kind masterpiece took two years to complete, and was finished less than three months ago. It has approximately 1600 miles on the odometer. It runs and drives perfectly…tracks down the road straight as an arrow. And, best of all, this listing includes ownership of the fully-licensed limousine company that owns the bus, including State of Hawaii Public Utilities Commission licensing, company website, company logo, company telephone numbers, and embroidered Tommy Bahama drivers uniforms. The company (Endless Summer Limousine) is a turn-key operation that is garnering a ton of interest in its first two months of operation, and already has bookings well into 2015. In case you did not know, Maui is the number one destination wedding spot in the world, with over 7,000 weddings every year. With its unique niche in the marketplace, this company has limitless potential. Although it is a very difficult decision, sudden personal family issues are necessitating my relocation to the mainland and the sale of the company.

As stated, this stretch microbus was professionally built by a VW-only restoration shop in Southern California. No expense was spared during its two-year rotisserie restoration. Every single nut, bolt, and part is new...I mean absolutely everything. And, the parts are not swap meet Chinese junk. Only the highest quality parts that money could buy were used to build this vehicle (Wolfsburg West, Wolfgang International, Aircooled Accessories, etc.).

This bus is 100% rust-free, and the paint and body are incredible. The PPG paint was sprayed in original colors from a 1957 Chevy...tropical turquoise and India ivory. The entire bus, including the interior, frame, undercarriage, wheel wells, inside and bottom of doors, etc. was coated with POR15, a rust preventative. I had anticipated it would spend its life in Maui, so every precaution was taken to prevent rust from ever forming on this beauty. Wherever you live, rest assured this vehicle will remain in pristine condition despite the weather (or salt on the roads).

The bus was also covered throughout the interior with Fatmat sound deadening material…no excessive road noise to bother the passengers (or the driver). The Fatmat also makes the high-end stereo system sound impeccable (Alpine head unit, Alpine amp, 6 JBL speakers).

The bus is powered by a VW 2074cc engine that is a bullet-proof torque monster, with dual port, single carburetor, and custom modified venture. As part of the PUC licensing, the bus had to be weighed…it came in at just under 3900 lbs. The custom engine moves this bus very effectively, even with a load of 12 passengers. The bus was driven from San Diego to the port of Long Beach at 65mph and it had some pedal left (top speed here in Maui is only 55mph).

Here is a non-inclusive list of high-end parts:

Front Safari windows – stainless steel (from Wolfgang International)
Rear Safari window – stainless steel (from Wolfgang International)

14 Side Pop-Out windows with Large Spoon Latches – chrome (from California Import Parts)
Chrome front door window frames (chrome-plated at California Plating in San Diego, CA)
Polished deluxe trim on beltline and bumpers with black rubber inserts (from Aircooled Accessories in the UK)
Front disc brakes (conversion from VW bay window bus so parts are readily available)
Gene Berg performance shifter with reverse lock-out (added feature as a theft-deterrent)
    LED headlights (from Truck-Lite)
LED custom tail lights (fabricated to fit inside OEM housings)

LED third-brake lights/directional signals mounted in rear window
    Vintage Speed exhaust system
    Blaze-Cut automatic fire suppression system
Viper alarm with custom sensors and remote notification
Ultima Red Top battery (to run the bus) and Ultima Yellow Top battery (to run the electronics)
RGBW LED light strips running the entire length of the interior of the bus on both sides (can be changed to ANY color)

Custom wood flooring and wood interior

American-style bumpers (powdercoated RAL9016 traffic white)
15" VW original crows foot rims (powdercoated RAL9016 traffic white)
    Good-Year Custom Super Cushion 2-3/4" whitewalls (205/75R15)
    German-quality VW stainless steel hubcaps
    Custom 17" wood steering wheel

    Restored speedometer
Custom 2-tone brown interior with white piping and hidden pleats
    Chrome door pull handles
    Chrome interior grab handle
Chrome drink holder in front cab

Stainless steel drink holders in passenger area
All new rubber and glass throughout entire vehicle

LCD screen with reverse back-up camera in license plate

    Back up siren (120db)

Reverse back-up lights from 1960’s VW beetle mounted to rear bumper

Custom gauges (oil temp, cylinder head temp, and oil pressure)
Gerson metal (green metal) used for all rust repairs

The list literally goes on and on and on...in all honesty, the only thing missing is a VW bus clock in the front cab…I have not found one in good enough condition to warrant installing it in this masterpiece.

Every single part on this vehicle is brand new, from engine lid hinges to wiring harness to complete brake system to mirrors and everything in between. The engine, transmission, and gear reduction boxes were all completely disassembled and rebuilt using only new parts. If you are a serious buyer, please contact me and I can send you a link to over 600 pictures of the build. I also welcome any inspection and test drive.

Considering the costs of donor VW busses, the high-end parts installed on this masterpiece, and the two years of custom shop time during the restoration process, it would cost over $250,000 to recreate this vehicle. Of course, that price does not include the time and money invested in getting the limousine licensing from the State of Hawaii, as well as other company assets.

The listing price for the company and the vehicle is $220,000. I will also consider selling just the vehicle separate from the company if you are not interested in owning a fully-licensed limousine company in Maui.

To gauge your expenses, if you are interested in having the vehicle shipped, it will cost approximately $1,100 to ship it from Maui to the port of Long Beach, California via Matson Ocean Services.

Please feel free to email me (mark@endless-summer-limo.com) or call me with any questions on the company telephone. 808-See-Maui (808-733-6284). The vehicle is located in Maui, registered in Maui until December 2015, and has a valid safety inspection in Maui until October 2015. It also has a clear CA title in the name of the company. Vehicle is sold as is with no warranties of any kind.

This vehicle is for sale locally, and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time.

Please ask any questions and have your funds secured before placing a bid. A deposit of $5,000 is due via PayPal within 48 hours of the auction ending, with the remainder of the funds due within two weeks (or, as agreed to by buyer and seller). I can also provide you with the contact information for the shop that created this masterpiece in case you have any technical questions beyond my knowledge. Lastly, if you have serious interest in this vehicle and/or the company, feel free to call me to end the auction. (808)733-6284. I can guarantee you there will not be another VW bus like this for sale any time soon (if ever), so make it happen for yourself now.

    Good luck and God bless!!!

All the rage in the US back in the 70's. Remember Frank Cannon and the phone he had in his Lincoln Continental 2-door hardtop?
    220px-Lincoln_Continental_MK4_1972.JPG

In his car, it wasn't possible to dial, there was an operator to do that for you, although there was an AT&T system that allowed the customer to dial. The UK had the Post Office Radiophone Service.

I believe there were plans for a commercial system here, but I heard a rumour it failed because the Dept. of P&T made life difficult. It's possible someone may be able to enlighten us.
