In fairness I reckon you should start a new thread for that :) Otherwise this one will fill up with stuff from €2000 to €4000 upwards me thinks. A month's take home on a car, f that me thinks.

    Agreed.

There's enough input on here to make the final judgement call - there are quite a few variables but 1000 sheets seems to be the very top end where price is concerned.

Fair enough, but there already seems to be a multitude of €2k and €3k cars being posted up here.
Let me make it clear a €3k Punto can never be bangernomics, but what about a €3k Lexus?

They actually go for crazy money on ebay, very collectable if you have a running version.
see its doing 7-8 miles per hour already and its not even started must be a real flyer

Let me make it clear a €3k Punto can never be bangernomics, but what about a €3k Lexus?

    My stance on bangernomics
    - cheap to buy and ideally get back 80% of the purchase price in 12 months time
    - ideally the thing should return 30mpg ish and be no more than 2.0 so fuel costs and motor tax are not extreme
    - be straight and solid and require minimum work, nothing beyond a DIY service and a tire or two
    - have more than 6 months NCT

Now that's what I reckon bangernomics is, other folks reckon a big yoke that costs a lash to tax is bangernomics too if the purchase price is very low. For example, buying an LS400 for a grand that has 12 months NCT on her, tax it for 12 months then flick it on for whatever you can get. It's still cheap motoring as you have avoided depreciation really. I'd do that myself but it's not as frugal as buying the likes of a mark 3 diesel Golf in good nick that needs nothing. Bit soul destroying driving that though, much easier on the pocket admittedly.

I may well be getting rid of my ZT before year end, I'd expect to see €2000 for it, I'll have spent €1200 ish on tires, servicing etc in the 12 months. Cheap motoring but in my bangernomics mind it's quite expensive. But it was 8 when I bought her and cost me €1380 more than what I sold a 1993 520i for so it's by no means expenive either.

Why buy a €3000 punto as a bangernomics car when €800 will buy you an older one that will do everything the €3000 one will do?

So too the Lexus, why spend €3000 on one when with patience you'll get an older one with lots of test for less than half that? The cheaper you buy the less it can depreciate, in my view depreciation is the thing to eliminate from motoring if you want to do it cheap.

    +1

The cheaper you buy it, the more you've left over to spend on petrol and motor tax :D

could be tempted, are they any use? a quick squizz at the reviews shows head gasket failures left right and centre. Not that I trust what I read on the internet though :)

Pretty sure the manual gearbox was an option - standard was 3-speed auto.

    Not your ornery onager

Remember when these came out back in 96. Heralded as the next big thing to take on the escort/astra etc. Unfortunately for Chrysler, ford introduced the focus, Opel, the astra and vw, the mk 4 golf all within 2 years and that put an end to any aspirations.

Btw, manual was standard with auto available as a no cost option.

Shocking! Back when the Neon was introduced in Europe in '94 even the retarded Japs (who always take a good few years to copycat anything originally researched and developed in Europe) were on 4 speed autoboxes. My old '94 E34 BMW had a 5 speed autobox...

Weren't they 2.0 only? Non runner here due to motor tax. Not a hope of getting folks out of their 1.4 Escorts into one, even though the Escort was a woeful car.

In fairness the Escort in 1996 was a vast improvment over the 1992 model, had decent Zetec engines, drove well, and was no worse than anything else there at the time, and definately a better bet than the Chrysler. Obviously as alredy stated things moved on a lot with the Golf and Focus.

I started off in one, nice to learn in, a 96' cabaret registered as a 97'

The 1.4 was pretty spartan though, old nosiy cvh engine that had to be pushed very hard to keep up with traffic.
Gearbox would often refuse to go into reverse when cold. Still at least it had central locking and electric windows.

I can remember being neck and neck with a fiat seicento when I slowed down to 50mph and he tried to overtake me with both of us in a crap car stalemate

I also had a 1.8 Si with the proper zetec engine and lovely mtx75 gearbox, nice to drive, loved the look of it but it came close to killing me a few times

Wasnt the top of the range one the (the R/T) half decent?

The RS Cossie? They were turbo and 4wd :) Savage motor, but had not much in common with the 1.3 and 1.4 yokes that plagued Ireland.

Apologies, I got the wrong end of the stick there.
Any Neon would be better than an Escort in my view :) The 2.0 only made them a non runner here though. Also most Escort drivers would drive nothing else but a Ford, an uncle of mine had Anglias, Escorts, Focus' and now a Fiesta as he is has the free travel and uses the bus alot. The chap has never owned a non Ford car. Fair enough with a Focus but the Escorts from Mark 4 on (Mark 4 being a good bus in my view) were all pretty poor compared to everything else on the market.

Down here in Cork loads of ex Ford workers still would drive nothing else but a Ford.

Do you know if they get a discount for being ex employees?

I know a guy who worked with an ex whose in his early 60's and claims that he can get a discount off a new Ford car for being an ex employee in one the English assembly plants

He drives a red Pug 207 GTi right now so I don't know if he's lying or not
