    I like that

I've emailed the seller to see if we cans shed some light on the work needed
Can anyone remember the original ad and how long ago it was sold

It needs panel damage fixed after a van backed into it and front anti roll bar bushings for the nct

One alloy missing as it was robbed and other than that it is ok

Strangely though on a car with only 113k miles it has had a top end rebuild and new timing chain and the gearbox rebuilt according to the owner

I'm thinking of viewing this evening after work

They're pretty cool! Very vague to drive, the auto box is fairly crap but they're a nice comfort cruiser. I got mine out of my system anyway :L

I'd even give it a go with one of the yokes Edd from Wheeler Dealers uses on dents.

Some hoor kicked my rear panel in one night when I left the car in town. Pulled it out with the sucker from my satnav! Worked a treat and looks do-able on the Jag

Haha, a plunger might even do the job in that case.
Thin sheet metal I guess, what you driving?

I've had second thoughts after thinking about everything the seller said

The rear quarter panel has a slight dent from a van hitting it......alloy wheel is missing from there, hub have been replaced, brake disc replaced and rebuild of the suspension again at that area 3 weeks ago

Also the seller said he cannot afford to run two cars.......but has just bought a 03 Merc to go with his Golf.

I think it may be a can of worms which I can do without. For anyone who is still interested it has test till may and tax till the end of april

It looks a little battered, would you consider this bangernomics ??

Early 190s had the simplex timing chain, which if memory serves was recommended to be replaced every 60K miles. Maybe this went and thus the top-end rebuild?

I know you said you've gone off this, but just thought I'd chip in....

    Not your ornery onager

This though is a late 190E as its a 1992 registration so would that still apply?

The car is most likely fine but given the bang its had and the rectification work done and now the sellers desire to sell so soon I'm wondering if there is more to be done. Not a chance I'd do all that work and then sell it for so little but maybe I'm just the suspicious type

I have my eye on a nice Morris Marina in England (I'm mental for some British Leyland rust fitted with a piano) and a nice Renault 11

Some cars I looked at over the past month:

http://www.carzone.ie/search/Citroen/Xantia/1.8-16V/201003196650390/advert?channel=CARS - asking price is mad but he's had it nearly two months now so I'm sure he'll take any reasonable offer at this stage. Good condition, drives well, no rust, interior was very clean and dry. Bad points are it's a petrol, it's probably due a timing belt (marked as done at 50k but god knows how long ago), the sunroof and temp. gauge didn't work, aerial is missing and the laquer is peeling on the grille.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1951325 - Not really clean inside (it's on a farm), big dent (with deep scratches) on the other wing, but besides that it all seemed good (climate control and all electrics seemed to work). And surprisingly for a high-spec hatchback it's not a UK import, apparently it was a showroom car (in Fermoy?) which would explain the low mileage too.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2001369 - body not great (lots of scratches and dents), tyres a bit crap, seems mechanically sound though.

In the end bought a 2002 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi - at €2900 it was barely bangernomics but it's low mileage, decent spec, and I'm pretty happy with it.

If all the electrics were working and its a big IF, This Alfa looks like some cheap bangernomics fun, 31k miles €1500... I always liked this car and had one back in 2000, lost a fortune on depreciation, but had a smile on my face..

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Alfa-Romeo/166/*SPRING-/201107201316119/advert?channel=CARS

I came across this little Corsa low mileage and 6 months tax on it. little on the pricey side.. was thinking about something like that for the Au-pair we have at the moment.

Wouldn't bet on it! He still has one car I made him a good offer on nearly 4,5 years later now (it was a mad price then and it still is)...

You've already caught the nissan owner on a fib "beautiful clean car inside and out" - thats just blatant BS if there's a badly dinged wing that he "forgot" to show or mention in the ad. Wouldn't believe anything else he'd tell me about the car. Same liar is probably calling you "another donedeal timewaster" cos you didn't fall over yourself to buy it...

It's definitely not an import at least (I checked that myself), and there was nothing to suggest the mileage wasn't genuine, then again there was no service history at all. Not sure if Fermoy Nissan would be willing to give info about it if the story is true, I was about to call them but got distracted by silly French cars :)

    Saw this too: http://www.carzone.ie/search/Alfa-Romeo/156/1.8/201106201173365/advert?channel=CARS
No secret dents on this, meticulous service history (receipts for absolutely everything), drives well, CD changer. Only fault was the brake light stayed on when I was driving (not as bright when handbrake on, so maybe some other fault?), dealer said he'd sort that out. The Citroen C5 at the same dealer is a complete shed though! It's that cheap for a reason ;)

Had spotted the C5, good to know not to bother with it!

All 190 Mercs had duplex chains post November 1989 and there is no way on Gods Earth it should let go. The ad doesn't mention top end work, just a timing belt. Now given what some people know about their own cars that could even be a reference to the serpentine belt that powers the steering and the radiator fan.

Surely the fan was electric on a 190?

can be a fault with a chip on the rev counter. common fault with 156's. also the price seems high

    my bad
The fan works off the drive but is tripped by electric sensor, its the cooling system pump that works directly off the belt.

Did you have electrical problems with your old 166? I certainly didn't with my 156 nor have other alfa owners I've known. Sure timing belts, suspension bushings and lazy thermostats are ubiquitous alfa problems, but I really think electrics are just one of these things that is way overstated, without any specific examples.

Would need full documented suspension rebuild front and back, new timing belt variator and water pump, thermostat, disks and pads, tyres and spark plugs at that price for a 12 year old 156. No mention of leather, no alloys. Way off the mark for bangernomics, and I love Alfas.

I had no electrical issues that I can think of on a 166 I used to have. It was the other issues that were the killer with the lack of availability of reasonably priced parts at that time. Running one now should be pretty reasonable given the numbers being broke now.

Not only that, I drove one every day for the last 2 years. Great car, the only expensive part is the tax. Damn government:mad:

A good trailer for 380, but is it legal?

Imagine towing it behind a caddy.
