The chap might be heading home, might have lost hos job etc etc. In fairness it's more than likely worth the guts of the asking price.

True enough but I would be investigating it thoroughly.

As anyone would when buying a 12 year old car with not far off 200k miles on it ;)

For some reason in '98 there were a lot of cars registered like this. My own S70 was registered on 23rd December and I've seen many other cars registered in between Christmas Day and New Years Eve 1998. The only thing I can presume is that there was some sort of tax increase for 1999.

    Yup, you presumed right:

    VRT on Cars

I propose to restructure the VRT rates on cars. The new structure will favour smaller cars by raising the VRT rate on larger cars. The current VRT rates on cars are 22.5 per cent for vehicles up to and including 2,500 ccs and 28 per cent on vehicles over 2,500 ccs. I propose that a new three tier structure should be introduced. The current VRT rate of 22.5 per cent will apply on cars up to and including 1,400 ccs, a 25 per cent rate will apply on cars up to 2,000 ccs, and a 30 per cent rate will apply on all cars over 2,000 ccs. These changes will bring in £43 million in extra revenue and will apply from 1 January 1999.

My Avensis hasn't missed a beat for the last 35000 miles, they're so mechanically simple that a dud would be easy to spot. For 850 its a small risk to take

The only thing I would say at that money is that it has defo had a nice smack, it has 5months test left and for that money a man would get the 1.6 petrol in better nick with more test on it. Also those diesels are not that lite on the juice so would a petrol be a better bet?

I'm getting around 550 miles to a tank on mine, that's pretty good. I know a d-4D will do more but no injector or flywheel maladies down the line.

At 15k miles per year, a minor modern diesel mishap like one of those two would take about 10 years to recover from financially presuming the more modern car is 5MPG better fuel wise :)

I used to get that regularly out of the petrol model Avensis. Mind you it required a very light right foot and a very low bank balance to encourage me to do it

    possible Japanese import there?

Auto box, estate, relatively decent spec

Or do all JDM cars have aircon?

Wouldn't a Jap have a square rear plate tub?

I know JDM mini's and MGF's had a euro spec number plate holder so it doesn't mean it's not a JDM car. My money is on a UK import though although the seats looks like they have an un-usual covering

€325 buys you a Volvo 850 which has the failed NCT document included in the ad. Bargain of the week imho.

Easily another 80-100k miles of motoring left in that. Besides the few scratches it's quite tidy also.

Early 850's like this are getting rare these days.
