There are a lot of cars that I wouldn't be seen dead in, but that's not one of them.

I quite like them in that spec.

That looks only ok because the picture is teeny tiny :pac:

Joking aside though, I don't think they're that bad looking. Dated, but no worse than some cars of the mid to late 90's.

They look odd, nobody can argue with that really, BUT they are really comfortable and once you're in one you don't have to see the outside (which i don't actually mind anyway). I've had a good few of these and i find them to be excelletn cheap cruisers with a lot of comfort. Just ideally get a 2.3 or a v6 with leather and auto

Not my idea of Bangernomics but a just tested 2.0 16v GTi may interest some folk.

    Full?id=8168298

Few quid off the asking price and it mightn't be bad value if it passes the next NCT, could be tested in February I suppose if you were so inclined, make most of the cash back then perhaps.

My yearning for a Golf GTI vanished as soon as I saw a picture of a mk 3 Golf for the first time. Jeez that must have been the guts of 20 years ago, or am I getting my timings wrong here? That said, that car is good value for a VAG head!

Timing is bang on I'd say, iirc they came out in 92 or 93. Was never overly interested in them myself though tbh, it's a reflection on how bad things are if that GTi is on donedeal for weeks. I dunno how much of interest there is in them but you'd reckon some folk would be wetting themselves thinking of a fresh (looking) Gti that just passed the NCT.

Nope, Mk3 GTI's are horrible sellers.

Mainly because, well, look at it?

I'd say it was the lack of poke even more than the looks. Most people looking at a GTI would expect (hope) that those letters would indicate some form of modest performance, and in 8v format especially, they were woefully slow. I had one and you just couldn't justify paying 2 litre motor tax on a car that was being embarrassed by 1.6 16v alternatives. And least if it was somewhat quick you might be able to overlook the slabby bland styling, but blummin heck they were a seriously disappointing drive.

FFS, if thats all it needs for an NCT - why not do it and double the price of the car....?
Oh wait, it needs more than that.

God that brings me back, man they lacked styling. The gear stick casing looks like one of Foster and Allen's accordians:)

They came out in 1989, they looked a lot better than most of the competition imo.

Your determination is admirable, I have been faffing about telling myself Im gonna treat myself to a bangernomics Sunday Cruiser, something with a hefty engine but that will give me an enough of a rush to last me through the week with my ultra reliable Avensis:cool:

Think it might even have been '88 in Ireland and '87 on the continent. Interior space in them seemed insanely huge for the segment at the time and the optional but rare digital dashboard was like something out of a sci-fi movie. Countless derivatives were spawned off the platform, who can find the newest reg'd Tipo derivative on Carzone? I see a 2010
    Alfa 147
    ;).

A nice car that the seller is threatening to break: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2604602

The only real off putting thing is the damage on the left hand rear side. It seems generally neglected.

This is the real bangernomics car though: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2593836
