    What an ignorant cnut.

I wonder does he know that if he did the small jobs that need doing he'd sell it for double that price. Instead he is threatning to weigh it in for a couple of hundred quid if no one gives him a grand by this weekend.

It's far too new a car to be scrapped.

wouldnt be the hardest car to find in a scrapyard , 2 rear lights , rear bumper and a bit of panel beating , even with the paint still scuffed on the rear panel youd still easily shift it for 1500 with less than 500 euro of work

If that's the case why not have a punt yourself and make a grand :)

You know, I actually would consider it.

It's just I don't have a thousand euro ready to spend straight away.

There could be a nice few quid in this for somebody.

It'd be half viable at 1k if it didnt need the bodywork, bear in mind it doesn't seem to have NCT.
I wouldnt get all teary eyed about a volvo in a ropey colour needing bodywork being sold for parts.

It's a decent spec though and I quite like the colour (Maya Yellow). It may be a bit too much for convervative Irish tastes but I have always liked it.

If you got a panel job done on the L/H side, sourced two rear tail lamps from a scrapyard and put it through the NCT you would still have plenty of margin left. You see similar V40's to these fetching anything up to 2.5k.

A nine year old car with just over 100k is definitely not fit for the scrapyard.

That's an S40, which isn't as desirable as the estate V40, so worth at least 500 quid less to start with.

It also has that dreaded GDi engine.

It is in a desirable spec though silver with black leather. 150k miles too not kilometres.

    What is the GDi engine?

It's the direct injection Mitsubishi engine, which is a lot more troublesome than the other 1.8 engine used in the S40/V40 (Renault I think)

Meh, I'd have it. History, receipts, belt done. Bit rich at €1500 for a '97, if it was closer to the even €1000, it'd be worth it.

I wouldn't touch that either. Looks lowered. Its been resprayed, and there are some pug logos missing from the bonnet and rear. looks like it was crashed and I don't believe for one second that a 14 year old diesel Peugeot D-Turbo has only 125k on the clock.

I could be wrong of course....:D

I think the debadging is deliberate.

Yes agreed. I could be totally wrong in my first post about the car (hopefully I am) and in fact if the car is genuine, yoiu could have a lovely car for small money - lovely driver too.

The S40/V40 never used a Renault petrol engine.

I'd really suggest you read up more and get your facts right.

    Almeras got spotlights!

Cool, must be invisible. LOL :D

He did suggest he wasn't 100% sure about the Renault bit :)

That's why I put "i think" in brackets
It doesn't really bother me who volvo got this particular engine from, the question was about the GDI engine and has been answered.

Yeah, but you "think" they never made their own engines in general and I even remember you posting it before.

I don't care about people getting things wrong now and again, it's just blatant ignorance towards fact that gets my goat.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    OK enlighten us then :)

A quick google is telling me all 4-pot petrol engines (except the Mitsubishi 1.8l GDI) in both generations of the S40 are based on Volvo's own 4-pot as used for the first time in the 960 in the early 90s?

    Correct.

It was the modular block which produced 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engines. Renault used one of the four cylinders as well as a five cylinder in their Laguna and Safrane in the 90's due to their brief tie-up.

Very weak greaboxs, other than that, they're very bland at best but do the job!

The s40 and laguna shared a 1.8 engine though didn't they?

I accept volvo built the odd engine themselves, but they've had engines from loads of manufacturers under their bonnets (vw,psa,Renault, mitsubishi, ford etc)
