It can be a typo error, i.e. €1,000 asking price, but I may be wrong.

It's sold, called about it yesterday

Or maybe not, on re-reading the ad, i called in response to an ad for that same car, in kerry, with the same pictures, the name declan was given instead of john, price was the same. I was told that the car was sold at that stage

    somethin dodgy about that

I was offered a 00 diesel black one, taxed and tested until next March, for 2 grand... It belongs to a friend of mine and I know the car.

If it was Auto I'd be on it, but it's manual with cloth seats...

    Hmmm

On the manual gearbox on those C classes don't they have first gear where 2nd normally is and so on?Thought I remember seeing that in a taxi I was once in..

Nope, that would be a dog leg and fairly sure that was in the older 190 Amg's.

I like manual, but it'd want to have a fair more test to be worth the (probably more than) €2k though without leather.

190 cosworth is the one famous for having that gearbox

I'm not getting at you, but I think there are far better places to put your money than paying 2k for a bog standard manual E-Class from a generation that had serious rust problems.

If that car didn't have a three pointed star, it would be nothing.

    .

But it isn't "a lot of car" for 1,950.

I know Irish people as thick as they are will think it's something special because it's a Merc, so you're not wrong about that.

They are asking €1950, there's the guts of 6 months tax on it and it's NCTd. If it's not rusty and can be bought for €1700 ish it's a decent buy.

You tried to fight the corner of a 2.9 15 year old Volvo estate priced at not much less recently iirc :P

Edit, it's a Kompresser model apparently, hardly bog standard

    1,195 isn't two grand: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2652549

    Not an outrageous price anyway.

Kompressor was the bog standard model. The normally aspirated E200 was discontinued around the 1999 facelift IIRC.

That car is also bog standard in spec. Aside from metallic paint, it has absolutely no extras and is manual, which in an E-Class is about as desirable as a toothache.

€1700 less 1/3 of 2.0cc tax for a year is not much more than the price of that Volvo, tax the Volvo for 3 months and weigh it up :)

I honestly can't fathom how you can reckon the E-Class is not desirable at the price and at the same time make any sort of case for that Volvo.

The thread is bangernomics after all.

Didn't think 2l Kompressor was the sh1tter of the range tbh though.

What's there not to fathom about it? The V90 is a huge amount of car for the money with a smooth straight six and a sumptuous leather lined interior. If I had to pay road tax that would make it as expensive a purchase as the E-Class then I would happily.

The E200 Kompressor has a wheezy supercharged four pot and patchy reliabilty/build quality. That particular example is also miserable spec wise. There really is not much more to say.

Accepting each to their own and all that the merc is half the cost to tax, the reliability etc isn't that bad at all, interior aside the Volvo is a rotten looking car that would cost 25 euro a week to tax, the merc could be sold on again when the tax is up making back much of the purchase cost. THe lack of leather is easily sorted if you are so inclined, not all of them rusted either, the e200 will be gone in a week I'd say. They're also not a bad car to drive really to be fair. You'll prefer tIe Volvo I'll prefer kid merc, everyones happy :)
