That's what I thought at first but for €500 I may set aside my principles.

    Bang for buck right there!

I said it before and I say it again: IMO A manual on a 16 valve 4 cyl mercs is good and preferable to extract more power if you don't do too much stop-start driving in the city. That M111 is not exactly the torquest engine in the world. I reckon that's the main reason why they have all been supercharged for ages.

The old style auto feels much like a rubber band connection between your engine and final drive. Great on an E280-> but not so on E200/220. For an example I changed from E220 T to a 1.2 Brava and the latter felt so much nippier at speeds under 60 mph that it's not even funny.

I am also not the biggest fan of the automatic transmission in the 124-series. I drive a manual S124 and also have an auto S124. I used to drive an E220T as well and the automatic works absolutely fine in everyday conditions (lovely in city traffic), but the increased fuel consumption (by approximately 25%) together with lowered performance would make my choice slightly towards the manual these days, unless I spend most of my time in the traffic (which I personally don't).

I love the automatic transmission on my E200 S124 I wouldn't have bought a manual tbh, the point of me buying a barge was for comfort and relaxed driving, not haring around. I've found my average speed is about 5-10 mph lower now, just because I'm happy to sit at a comfy speed and enjoy the ride. It's the smiles per gallon I suppose, one foot for pedals, elbow out and one hand covers everything else.Total bangernomics convert. Will drive it for a bit, then try something else. After talking to Seweryn, It's got me looking out for Diesel autos now.

I've a feeling the seats in that W124 are in absolute sh1te! Still a good buy assuming it drives well.

Sure Keith, the automatic is very relaxing to drive. Nothing wrong with it and it is all down to the personal preferences. The auto boxes are very reliable in the 124-series anyway.
You are more than welcome to pop in some day and have a spin in my E300 Diesel Estate Auto-lazy-matic ;).

Looks normal to me. Would be more worried if it was under "max" with semi warm engine.

Exactly as it should be, as the engine is cold, so is the oil. Cold oil = high viscosity = high oil pressure.

Merc W114 (280CE) for sale 1200 quid. No NCT needed and tax is vintage.

Now .. the issue is, how much work is needed. That's a good question.

850R - only one in Ireland? Pretty sure I saw a green one ages ago.

Pricey though. No mileage mentioned either.

my mate had a black 850r estate, handled like a dog so it may well be the only one that hasn't ended up in a hedge.

There are at least four or five in the country, from what I know.
    Pricey though.

Quite cheap actually. It would cost you more to buy one in the UK.

That particular car was posted about three weeks ago in another advert and it looked in a sorry state. The seller seems to have given it a clean up and taken some new pictures though. I certainly would buy it if I could.

They're not that bad really. Torque steer is a bit of a problem but the handling is fine for the amount of power that goes through the front wheels.

lol, hard to get an 850 T5 or T5R in a hedge unless the driver can't drive a nail or else is going at a looney speed for the road (easy to do in one of course)
