just for something a bit different from the norm how about a clean looking, recently NCT'd Alfa 156

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1709390

I'd nearly pick it up for a second car for that price.

That's very good actually. I'd nearly be tempted by it myself.

heres another alfa 156 long NCT, decent enough price too.

although you'd have to change those alloys... probably bringin it out of bangernomics territory.

Why would you fit manky alloys on an alfa!

Nice - that's a Sportivo model as well, so you get the nicer alloys, sideskirts and possibly lower suspension. It looks very similar to my old Alfa.

:) I currently drive a FIAT so I am not expecting too much!

Ask any Alfa owner, not someone who says they're crap without ever even driving one.

Alfa's are addictive. Really fcuking addictive. :D

I hear the interiors wear pretty badly in those 156s, anyone have experience with them at that kind of age?

The cloth in my 156 was quite thin, and was a little prone to tearing. My dad had a different fabric like this, and it was absolutely fine over the 11 odd years he owned it.

That's helpful. As the owner of a 156 with over 150k miles, I'm forced to disagree with you!!!!!

the truth is they need care (as every car)
in ireland most of ppl just use cars
not really care for anything with them
just fill the fuel and drive

no bulb? no problem... i can still see
no new oil? what for... ? i think there is some in the engine already...
no new filters? what is this?

and then things happen and ppl start sayin this car iz shoit...

    So, we're all misguided?

A mate in the UK recently lost his shirt on a properly maintained 2.4 JTDM Brera. He loved it but it was pants.

I have never had an Alfa, but anybody I do know who owns one swears by them.
Would I be right in saying that it was the dealers rather than the cars that gave the brand the bad name.

    I would love a 33,,:)
But would happily have a 166.

The truth is they need more care than many other brands, the twin sparks in the 156s and probably the rest of the range have a looney short timing change interval & suspension components made from chocolate.

I'm happy for you so :).
I know two people that bought one and had the engine die at 80-90k.
So what does that all mean?

The fact of the matter is that their engines are know to die, true it might be due to negligence or that they are highly strung engine with little tolerance, but when you are buying second hand, how can you tell that they were taken care of unless they have a full service history from an alfa dealer and even then that is no guarantee.

But the are lovely to look at alright.

Ive had a 2.0 Tspark 166. 99 reg. I bought it at 3 years old with a checked out 40k miles. God it cost a fortune to keep right. This might go some way to explaining why people dont keep them right. The first problem at that time was availability of reasonably priced parts. Used parts were impossible to find between here & uk unless very lucky, very little aftermarket stuff available at that time and the dealer prices were extorsion. I got a quote for 2600 for a replacement ics unit (Radio & screen etc) - turned out a new car battery brought it back to life. Must be very sensitive to voltage levels.
If I needed, a new suspension bush, it ALWAYS meant buying a complete arm at 300+. No anti roll bar bushes available without buying the bar for 200. Wheel bearing required whole hub at 250. Bad and all as this is, the dealers were actually worse if you were to use them. The clutch can be troublesome in the 2.0. It didnt like stop start driving at all and alasta autos told me they are a 'borderline design'.
The worse problem I had with the car was the fact that it could hit the sump off the ground all too easily - it was a joke really and turned driving on country roads into a bit of a nuisance.
Another dealer quoted me 700 or 800 for clutch slave cylinder replacement. I queried this and his response was that he was quoting the clutch change labour as it involved same work. I told him he was mistaking as cylinder was external, he goes away and still sticks to 700 or so. In the end, I fitted it myself in about half an hour and part was about 150. Thieves.

I don't like cars with huge gaps between tyre and arch like that.
