I adore the W124, and I have done for years... That's kinda my taste, I'd pick an S8 over an equivilant sports Coupe anyday.

Yeah, I admit I am quite a fan of the 124 Coupes and Convertibles. I think they are one of the finest motorcars ever made. I do however think the BMW E34 deserves more recognition, as the quality wasn't too far off and the styling and engines were far better.

Anyway, I know I've dragged this thread off topic so we'll get back on it.
    I love the S80 R, I think they're cracking looking,

I'd love them too if they existed.:D

Aye there's a fella about Limerick with a black one, doesn't drive it handy either :)

They're not as powerful as a contemporary M3 with 300bhp, but definitely a lot more cooler and alternative, as well as practical. No one will mistake you for a photocopier salesman either.

    :pac: off topic :D
W124 is far more comfy though. E34 feels like it's up to something, sort of sporty, folks reckoned I looked like I was up to something in my W124 (very reasonable priced hit man :pac: )

Why do you think I sold mine? I everytime I went out in it past 7 or 8 O clock I got pulled in by the Gardaí. I'd never been pulled in randomly in my life until I got that bus!

    Really ?:D

Loved mine, however the missus always got sea sick in it. So that was that for the W124 - little does she know I will have one again:D. Bigger cc next time round.

I agree with RJ, e34 v w124 two very different machines. The e34 feels more planted on the Tarmac, However a well sorted w124 IMO ozzes class, and far better on a longer cruise. Love 'em !

    Yeah, all true...
When I was buying my last 124T, the previous owner had an E34 Touring for himself on his driveway and he offered me a test drive in it. So I took it for a spin and I liked it in some way - the car felt stiffer, more direct, etc. However, it is just almost as well built as the W124 (great, but not as great ;)) and not as comfortable. It is all down to personal preferences at the end.

My last off topic comment :pac:
On a Friday afternoon in Oranmore in Galway I had parked her on a kerb, got back to the car and I noticed 2 chaps in an unmarked Mondeo paying lots of attention to me, they followed me for a mile then put on the flashies and pulled me over. No tax disc, insurance disc or NCT on her (:pac:) but had paperwork proof of insurance, an NCT fail report (nothing major) and hadn't gotten the logbook yet so couldn't tax her. Bit of an interrogation about what I was doing in Galway, Galway address, local Garda station in Cork, where I work etc. After it all he says to me had I come to their attention previously ?

why ? says I, do I look familiar Garda :pac:

(chap had no sense of humour)

You see, another reason NOT to have chrome wheel arches on a w124.

    :D:D

They're a bit sh1te, even for bangernomics, to be fair.

Have they not been that value for a while?

    Why?

Makes an awful lot more sense than most of V8 luxo barges that keep cropping up.
Cheap tax, decent space, good economy and most importantly, cheap to buy.
Also very cheap to keep on the road and simple enough to maintain out the front of your house.

In my opinion its exactly what a bangernomics car should be.

    Bangernomics

    =

In my opinion Banger + Economy / Economics of owning banger

    Escort is perfect.

Ah c'mon now. Life is for living, not just surviving. What would you buy / what's the best bargain - beans on toast for €1 or lobster for €2? :D

Shop around and you'll get a '00 Focus for €1k. That's a bit pricey for a 10 year old, sorry 11 year old, Escort, even if the 95k is correct, at half that it becomes interesting. Did these have a 6 digit odometer or did they roll back to 0 at 100k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,417 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

If I saw that ad for the escort, the one thing that wouldnt come into my head is 'bingo'.
1k for an escort, no chance.

I think we should have a thread for the luxo barges and another thread for cheap ass motoring.

    IMO that escort is neither.

Uh-oh! is bangernomics heading for a split??!!.... there has been mutterings of discontent on the actual meaning of the term.

Bangernomics - luxonomics (the likes of old A8's/lexus430/7series/s-class etc
Bangernomics - cheap motoring for under a 1000 euro. (anything goes)

Good idea or would it wreck the thread?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭Itsfixed

I don't see why Bangernomics can't incorporate both sides, and more.

Most posters here favour luxonomics and get a good kick out of spotting good examples of the breed, but to seek to exclude other interesting examples of bangernomics seems unfair.

Given the sheer diversity of cars out there, I think we're missing great examples of good bangers that aren't necessarily luxobarges, but simple represent great bang for your buck.

eg. 4x4s, classic bangers, city cars, sports cars, convertibles, coupes etc.

I've just bought a nice 1993 BMW e30 318 touring for €600, albeit from a friend. It's not what i would classify as a luxobarge, more like a classic banger.

One thing i would suggest, in order to lay down a basic rule, is anything under (I would suggest) €2,000 as this opens up the field considerably, and would make this thread more entertaining. And the cheaper the better, of course.

why can't it be both? To me its about the outlay, whatever you source or buy doing bangernomics is personal choice.
