Mine has the old pushrod Kent (HCS) engine, and it's incredibly reliable (starts in any weather).

lol at the starts in any weather comment, any car with a decent battery and the correct anti freeze will do likewise :) Just because folks reckon an Escort for a grand isn't value it doesn't make them snobs. You like Escorts most people don't and most folks wouldn't consider one as daily transport either.

I considered buying a mk 4 one as my first car :)

I agree with Onkle's view on the maintenance, I only do oil and filters and basic stuff like that, most car maintenance is simple stuff.

Anyhow, just to add fuel to the current Escort discussion. Utter bangernomics:

    Full?id=4781474

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1761055

1997 Ford Escort 1.8 zetec Ghia, price: 395 EUR.

    NCT 02/12, Tax just out.

I wouldn't buy it, but it's certainly a cheap way of motoring.

That's bangernomics, long test, decent engine and kit and less that the price of an oil and filter change at a VW dealer. The other one was just too pricey for what it is.

Another Ford, but not Escort :)

98 Ford Mondeo Ghia 2.0 silvertop engine
    nct until 4/june/2012
    taxed end jan 2011
    132183 miles
    €750 ono

The only thing, that would bug me is "changed to 1.6 on book (cheaper tax)".

    Otherwise, pretty good value.

Same car on donedeal for 775 EUR: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1771113

I once had a car not start for me, other than a flat battery, since the turn of the millennium. For all the moaning about electronics in modern engines, they're the reason nearly every car starts first time, every time. I do remember when it was necessary to cross your fingers when turning the key when I was a kid. As for ease of working on, most of what might be easy to do on an OHV ford, simply isn't necessary on a modern engine, adjusting valve clearances every 12k anyone? I remember doing an oil change on a Ka years ago and the oil filter is an absolute bitch to get at, one of the worst I've ever had to do.

I hate changing the oil on the sister's Ka, bastad of a job really, the first time I did it was terrible, so awkward.

Not for everyone but these manual ones are very rare and the tiptronic ones are troublesome

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1525193

Possibly 2 years test on her, no mention of miles but these go forever. I'd love one of these to be honest.

Was his a manual ? What happened it do you know that he needed both an engine and a box ?

Manual yeah. No sorry it wasn't a gearbox, it was his clutch.

It blew its clutch, and the engine was leaking oil badly...I can't remember the exact reason he needed a new engine!

Was surprised when you said gearbox, the manual box is not known for being an issue on them. Now I'd strongly advise folk never buy a tiptronic one, most of them give trouble. I really quite fancy a manual 2.2 VTEC Lude, the 2.2 auto non VTEC one I had was a hoot to drive if a bit rough around the edges. Well it had a rotten arch, was faded from red to pink and the coolant system was all rust. Great handling car though, absolutely brilliant to drive.

I'm really tempted to stop thinking practically and just buy that prelude...its lovely.

That would make an epic trackcar. I would definatly be tempted, too. Correction: I AM tempted.

Really? Father in law had one and it was one of the flimsiest cars I've been in (for an expensive car). Real tin can feel to it. Not that fast either unless you rev the bejaysis out of it (me no like that)

He replaced it with a Rover 620TI - ever driven one of them? :)

He bought it brand new in '95 but unfortunately, he felt forced to sell it after only a few months as criminals made several attempts to steal it :(

Back then fast saloons were very popular as getaway cars, a Garda told me that at some point every single Volvo 850 T5 (similarly powerful saloon) in the Dublin area had been attempted to be stolen

BTW I came close to buying a 620TI myself about 10 years ago when I was in the market for a fast saloon. It was a defining moment in my motoring career. I realised I did not want a small engine (even with a turbo) but instead I wanted a big engine. A few weeks later I bought a BMW 530i V8 :)

My first of three V8 petrol cars :D

    Nope :o
Was outbid on ebay for a 1999 Rover 800 Vitesse Coupe 3 years ago. Always toying with the idea of bringing in a 600ti, a chap on a forum I frequent sells one every 3 months or so in minty condition for less than a grand sterling (he trades in them as a hobby) but the VRT is now €720 ish on them. Makes them almost €2000 landed, bit steep for a car bought for £800.

About the Prelude, I'd rev the sh1t out of it for 3 to 6 months and then sell it on again.

A good reason to de-bagde the car.

I can guarantee that the 'induction kit' in that Prelude is causing a drop in power, that TenzoR stuff is horrible cheap ****e and the car will be sucking in nothing but hot air, the standard airbox will see more power

But non the less, all easy fixable.

620Ti was badged just a 600 from 97 on I think. Distinguishable then only by the black half leather interior and 16" alloys which also came in some of the NASP Honda powered ones and some of the diesels :)

Once the Impreza turbos were common enough everything else was relatively safe from thieves then for robbery purposes. 2.0 turbo, 4wd and space for 4 adults with a decent boot coupled with Jappers being easy to rob meant the 2wd stuff was largely left alone.

ROFL. I can see, why Clifford makes a good chunk of money in that market.

They were professional serious criminals. Not some youths nicking a car for joyriding. They knew exactly what cars they were after and I doubt a de-badge would have fooled them

That said, I would have loved a 718tds badge for my E38 :D

Depends on the car really, but sure, there's always indicators. Like I was thinking of debadging the M5, but then again, it's pointless. There is M5 on that car in so many places and the amount of exhausts and keynote make it obvious anyhow, to people that know what it is. And those who don't know, wouldn't even know what M5 means.

I think another problem that has arisen with some cars anyhow, is that there are so many wannabe replica's, that are done up to a pretty good level, that it's hard to tell until you hear the engine, so sure, they would go for where it's fairly safe that they get what they want.

    Anyhow, getting off topic here.

with 1000 or so spent these are a very very nippy car.

tempting to say the least ! :(
