Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Oh for sure it was better than nice, I used a mixture of Aldis stout and leek sausages (full pack) and some of my local butchers own recipe sausages.

The Aldi ones are the real prominent ones in the photo - and tbh next time I make it (and their will be a next time) ill prob go in with 2 x packs of the Aldi ones. They were dam good
Went with the chilli beans flavour very well together

    My mouth is watering......

A stew like that deserves some fresh, crusty bread rolls *drool*

Was making bread today and, as is normal in the winter during the day, there’s nowhere warm in this house to help with rising/proving. Pulled out the slow cooker and turned it to ‘Warm’. Perfect temperature for prepping dough! :)

That is brilliant, why did I never think of that?!

There's a 200 recipe book on sale on Amazon today for 99p. It's a Kindle edition so it'll save on shelf space, might be of some use to someone.

Frying them gives them more color and depth of flavour. I very rarely do that, i usually chuck everything in raw.

Amyone had any success with desserts made in the slow cooker?
Never did a full dessert in my mine but I do put my Apples in it for the likes of apple crumble...
Drop of water , cinnamon and brown sugar and let them soften over a couple of hours.

Hi, just found this thread.....I am after getting a gift of one of theses...

    https://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/Pdf/IB48728.pdf

I had always thought about buying a slow cooker but due to work schedule it never made sense. Now both of us are moving to 9-5 and it makes perfect sense.

    Two questions if ok
Is the one above any good?
Any recommended one to buy if not?

I had that exact one for 3 years with no issues whatsoever. It supposedly was possible to use the inner pot on the hob to brown meat but I used it once and it wasn't great. Plus, it heats up like nobody's business and burns the handsoff you. much better to brown meat in a regular frying pan I found.

Only got rid of it because I bought an Instantpot, coincidentally, seeing as I just started a bargain thread having seen one on sale.

Thanks for feedback, I was concerned it was a good one. I tried a stew but wasn't great...probably because I am doing wrong

I wouldn't bother using the inner pot to brown meat, plenty of pans to do that job:p

The most common mistake people make is to use too much liquid. You need to halve the amount given in recipes for the oven or hob.

A whole chicken is fine, once you accept it'll be more like shredded chicken/ fall apart afterwards.
The most common mistake people make is to use too much liquid. You need to halve the amount given in recipes for the oven or hob.
You can also use a broth mix in it to absorb some of the liquid, but normally better when you can keep an eye on it, as hard to get the balance right.

Take 2 slow cookers, roast until brown. Add one tablespoon of sugar to a mix, stir until ready. Add one more slow cooker and a cup of salt. Pop it in the oven at 200 degrees. After 1 hour, remove the slow cookers and pop them in the fridge. After 3 hours, remove the slow cookers, add some seasoning and serve...

    So:

    3 slow cookers.
    One tablespoon of sugar.
    1 cup of salt.
    Seasoning.

    Delicious!

Tesco have jumbo sausages that are a good texture, I'd say they're be perfect for slow cooking.

Slow cookers are very basic, the only real thing to be mindful of when buying one is the size. You don't want it to be too small.
On the subject of Tesco's slow cookers, some people have found that they're cooler than others and so take longer to cook in.

The pot of my slow cooker can be used on the hob to sear eg: stewing steak. Very handy. Saves on washing up.

in the past week, I have cooked a leg of lamb in the slow cooker, it came out brilliant, I have also done Bacon in the past, along with making jams, I find it such a great piece of kitchenware, and also the air fryer, less mess, and when sI make stews, I use liner, so no washing up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,939 ✭✭✭goat2

I never cover the meat with liquid, I throw in about a mugful and by the time it's finished cooking there's a lot more liquid in there. It's different if you're making a stew type dish.

I just season and put beef in slow cooker, without liquid, it will create its own anyway, I don't do it with any of my pot roasts

Would you mind sharing the recipe? I've a freezer full of legs of lamb (well 8-10 of them anyway) as we're all mad for lamb in the house and frequently BBQ it for Sunday dinner but never knew there was a nice way to slow cook it.

Also, I'm guessing if you can slow cook it you could possibly whack a frozen leg of lamb on low in the morning and it would be cooked by 6pm in the evening although I assume you couldn't brown a frozen leg of lamb before chucking it into the slow cooker????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,939 ✭✭✭goat2

Leave it thaw, season it, and whack it in, that is it, 5 to six hrs later, beautiful tender leg of lamb, and the juices can do for gravey, no mess or fuss
