    Burnett Wins NADC

    01 Jun 2009

SCOTT BURNETT has won the 2009 North American Darts Championship, defeating Darin Young 6-3 in the final.

Burnett, from Sacramento, wrestled the title from Young's grasp to claim the biggest title of his career.

Following a 6-1 win over Timothy Ebbs in round one, Burnett then overcame Brian Blake, Jim Widmayer and Tim Grossman in tight matches to reach the quarter-finals.

There, he overcame left-hander Ray Carver 6-1 and then ended a fine run from Chuck Pankow - who had knocked out number one seed Gary Mawson in the last eight - to reach the final.

Alongside the $6,000 first prize, Burnett's performance has also earned him a qualification place in the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic.

"Overall this is my best performance ever," said Burnett, who was left in tears after sealing victory.

"I'm thrilled to have won this tournament and now to be in the Las Vegas Desert Classic."

Young dropped just one leg in his first three matches in the event, against Eddie Lawrence, Garrett French and Tim O'Gorman, before defeating Chris White 6-2 in the quarter-finals and Jerry Van Loan 6-3 in the semis.

Young and Burnett will be joined in the Las Vegas Desert Classic by White and Bill Davis, who are the other North American Order of Merit qualifiers to join the PDC's top 16 and 12 qualifiers at the Mandalay Bay Resort in a month.

Davis narrowly hung on to his place in the event, with Young's win over Jerry Van Loan in the semi-finals ending the New York lawyer's hopes of qualifying for the Desert Classic.

    Walsh Completes 2009 Treble

    13 Jun 2009

MARK WALSH won his third PDC Pro Tour event of 2009 with victory over Jamie Caven in the final of Saturday's Players Championship.

Walsh followed up his victories in Coventry and Derby earlier this year with a battling display at the Barnsley Metrodome to claim the £6,000 title.

He edged out Andy Jenkins 6-5 in the quarter-finals before coming from 5-1 down to defeat Colin Lloyd in a deciding leg in the semis.

Walsh then overcame Caven in a high-quality final, which featured seven maximums in ten legs.

Caven landed one 180 and a 106 finish to win the opening leg, before Walsh replied in kind with a 115 checkout to level.

Caven hit another maximum in the third, but a 78 finish from Walsh saw him break throw before he moved 3-1 up.

Walsh landed a 180 but missed two darts for the fifth leg as Caven replied, and the next two legs were shared before a Walsh 180 set up a 41 finish as he pushed 5-3 up.

Caven opened the ninth leg with a 180 and took out 76 to remain in the contest, but Walsh was too strong with the throw in the next to seal victory.

Caven's £3,000 runner-up cheque further improves his chances of securing a qualification place for next month's stanjames.com World Matchplay in Blackpool.

He included Andy Hamilton and Jelle Klaasen amongst his victims in reaching the quarter-finals, where he defeated Steve Beaton in a deciding leg.

He then won the all-Derby battle with in-form Colin Osborne 6-5 in the semis, coming from 4-2 and 5-4 down to seal victory with a 116 finish.

Osborne's semi-final appearance followed his run to the final of the Blue Square UK Open last week, while Vincent van der Voort and Andy Jenkins joined Lloyd and Beaton in reaching the quarters.

Three-time World Champion John Part came from 5-2 down to defeat world number six Mervyn King in the first round, and went on to reach the last 16 before losing to Lloyd.

    Wizard Claims Barnsley Win

COLIN OSBORNE picked up his first Players Championship win of 2009 with a 6-2 defeat of Gary Anderson in Barnsley.

Osborne followed up his run to the final of last week's Blue Square UK Open and a semi-final appearance in Saturday's Players Championship by going all the way to the £6,000 title.

Early victories over Brendan Dolan, Kirk Shepherd, Andy Smith and Martyn Turner were followed by a 6-3 quarter-final defeat of Robert Thornton to put him into a second successive semi.

He then saw off Paul Nicholson 6-2 to reach the final, twice setting up potential nine-darters with back-to-back 180s in storming through.

The final saw him similarly dominant, with a break of throw in leg four putting him 3-1 up before he landed a second maximum of the final to lead 4-1.

A two-dart 64 finish kept Anderson in the contest, but successive 65 checkouts from Osborne ensured his third PDC Pro Tour victory.

Anderson's progression to the final included wins over Anastasia Dobromyslova, Jan van der Rassel, Andy Jenkins, Alan Tabern and Steve Beaton before he defeated Wayne Mardle 6-4 in the semis.

The run was also his fourth to a Players Championship final since joining the PDC earlier this year.

Mardle's display was his best of 2009, and featured narrow 6-5 wins in his first three games and victories over Vincent van der Voort and Mervyn King.

Nicholson's semi-final run was his best performance since reaching the quarter-finals at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

However, he would still need to reach at least one more semi-final in the remaining three Players Championships before the 16 qualifiers for the stanjames.com World Matchplay are decided at the end of the month.

The tournament also featured a nine-dart finish for Colin Monk in the fourth leg of his 6-1 first round win over Ray Farrell, which earned him a £2,000 bonus.

Two further Players Championships will be held in Dinslaken next weekend, before the PDC Pro Tour heads to America for the Las Vegas Players Championship ahead of the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic.

Well done to the pie man on winning yesterday and hitting a 9 darter on the way. No one would have expected him to win a tournament on the pro tour.

And well done to Walsh, he is in top form this year and could be a serious outside challeneg for one of the majors.

The Las Vegas Players Chamoinship is on tonight, I don't know who is playing in it as there is no news on the PDC or PDPA websites yet!
