    WHITLOCK CONTINUES INCREDIBLE YEAR
SIMON WHITLOCK won his sixth Players Championship of the year with a 6-4 defeat of Richie Burnett in Sunday's German Darts Championship at the Dolce Bad Nauheim.
The Australian continued his remarkable run of success on the PDC ProTour with the triumph, as Burnett suffered defeat in the final for a second successive day.
Whitlock moves up to fourth in the PDC Order of Merit following the victory, which he sealed in brilliant fashion with a 160 finish to cruelly deny Burnett.
Burnett held the early edge in the final, leading 2-1 after taking the first break of throw before Whitlock levelled with a 116 finish for a 12-darter and took out tops to lead.
Burnett finished 123 on the bull to win the sixth and also levelled at four-all with a 12-darter in the eighth, featuring a 180 and an 81 finish.
He looked set to edge in front in the ninth when three tons and a 140 left him 61, but he hit the bull when aiming for 25 before then missing double four, with Whitlock clinically finishing 92 on double eight for a 5-4 cushion.
Burnett then hit the bull again when aiming for 25 in the next when on a 121 finish, hitting treble 20 and then the bull when a 25 score would have left double 18.
Again there was to be no mercy as the Australian powered home a 160 checkout to take the win and the £6,000 first prize.
Whitlock had also produced similar moments of brilliance during the day, notably including finishes of 121, 130 and 97 in his semi-final win over Ronnie Baxter.
He rode his luck when Nigel Heydon missed darts to defeat him during their tight last 32 battle, while Whitlock also overcame Tony Randell, Vladimir Andersen, Steve Beaton and Mark Walsh on the day, before avenging Saturday's semi-final loss to Burnett to claim glory.
Burnett's display earned him a further £3,000 to complete his successful week, as he followed last weekend's semi-final in Killarney with two finals in Bad Nauheim.
He won a thrilling semi-final with Gary Anderson 6-4, taking a 4-1 lead before the Scot levelled, only for Burnett to punish misses from his opponent in the ninth and seal victory with a 13-darter.
He had edged out Andy Jenkins 6-5 in the last eight, and also gained revenge over Mark Webster for his defeat in Saturday's all-Welsh final as well as defeating Colin Lloyd.
Anderson's semi-final appearance followed up his quarter-final run on Saturday, while Mark Walsh was a loser to Whitlock in the last eight for a second successive day.
Jenkins' run to quarter-finals was his best display of the year, and included wins over Vincent van der Voort and Colin Osborne as he claimed a £1,000 prize which boosts his hopes of qualifying for the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

The Players Championship is in Derby this weekend and Phil Taylor is back to winning ways after winning today's final 6-3 against Mark Walsh. This is the last weekend for players to qualify for the World Championship so tomorrow should be interesting with the final chance in tomorrow's event to qualify for Ally Pally.

Day 2 of the Players Championship in Derby and the semi final line up is Simon Whitlock v Phil Taylor and Mark Walsh v Wayne Mardle. A surprise to see Mardle in the semis,he's had a terrible year on the circuit.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

Semi final results; Taylor 6 Whitlock 0,Walsh 6 Mardle 5. Another Taylor v Walsh final. Good day for Mardle and he'll be confident going into tomorrow's PDPA qualifier for a World Championship place.

Today was also the last day for players to book their place in the Players Championship and current champion Paul Nicholson will not be defending his title after failing to get into the top 32 in the players championship rankings after today's event.

The first floor tournament of the year is taking place in Germany today and it has been a great day for the Irish players especially William O'Connor who got his best ever placing in a PDC tournament reaching the quarter finals,a great start to the year for young Willie.

Phil Taylor made his return to darting action since the World Championship today but was knocked out in the last 16 by the gentle giant Andy "the Pieman" Smith. no gary anderson at the weeknd events?
    any reason for this

    No Wade or Lewis either

The only reasons for the absence of Gary Anderson,Adrian Lewis and James Wade I reckon is that their preparing for the Players Championship grand finals which are starting in Doncaster on Thursday. This is not been televised and I also noticed no sponsorship for this event which can't be good news for darts IMO. It's been shown online on www.pdc.tv but it will cost you £6.99 sterling for to watch it.

Several betting companies will have this available too. So if you have an account with Powers, 365 and a few others, then you will be able to watch for free.

haha adrian lewis beaten 6-4 by steve beaton in his first comp since becoming world champ. he was shocking, looks like he has been hammered for all of january. beaton destroyed him in the first 5 legs and fell off a bit to let lewis catch up but lewis darts were awful.

wade was pathetic too and has put on a crapload of weight and looks desperate.

Even though Lewis is a worthy World champion in each of the big tournaments either side of the World championship he has been dumped out in the first round,in the Grand Slam and now the players championship. I have read in other forums that his ex girlfriend has been slating him on her facebook page for him not seeing their daughter so he has personal problems at present.

Wade doesn't look a happy chappy at present!

Can't believe some punters on betfair were offering Beaton +3.5leg handicap  I thought Lewis would be dodgy after he over performed(IMO) at the WC's.

I haven't been watching the games online but reading on other forums people who paid £6.99 to watch it on the PDC website are fuming with the very poor quality picture and the frequent buffering, not good enough by the PDC. It's also been said about the poor crowds attending the event there, this tournament's future is not looking good!

yeah the camera work and overall quality is ****. not worth 7 quid at all.
i doubt this tourney will ever get coverage again.

Lewis is known for his 'blind' 180 shot....King looks like he's playing with his eyes closed and he's 4 nil up on Taylor!

Apparently he's suffering from a migraine....he'll want more migraines if they make him play like this

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 59 ✭✭damo180

from what i hear lewis and wade are very heavy drinkers, you can see it in both of them, the picture of bad health.
dont think either will feature this year in the big tournaments. Anderson and whitlock imo will have a good year, and maybe king along with the reliable taylor

    Taylor 13-12 Anderson

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

Didn't see the final but sounds like a cracking game. Pity Anderson didn't win. I watched the quarter finals today and the crowd was very small. It's possible this could be the last player's championship.

The PDC have some tough decisions to make in 2011 I reckon. With a lack of sponsorship and TV stations cutting back on sports coverage to save money I'd say we're looking at 1 or 2 top tournaments been dropped. At least the premier league,UK Open,World Matchplay,World Grand Prix,Grand Slam Of Darts and World Championship are contracted to Sky so that's still a healthy amount of darts guaranteed on our TV screens. However securing sponsorship for some of these events could be a problem.

One tournament I would like to see saved would be the World Cup team event,I thought this was 1 of the best TV tournaments of 2010.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭greened

yes good final and also a great semi final between Taylor and King. Taylor very patchy at times and his new darts are definetly preventing him from getting 3 in the one triple.
Looked out of it with 315 left against king and hit a 180 135 out on the bull to take it from King, who was 5 nil up at one stage in a race to 10.
Andersons also very pacthy and missed doubles (again) was his downfall. He was first to the double in the first 5 legs and ended up 3 -2 behind after 5. Great out of 128 from Taylor to win it 13 - 12, T20 T20 D4. Surprised he did not go the percentage way of 18's as anderson was on a 100+ finish.
    Crowds looked very small.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,480 ✭✭✭Devastator

After Phil "The Tinkerman" Taylor was at it again with changing and messing about with flights. After about 12 legs of the semi final against King he went away during 1 of the breaks, and grabbed his old darts(and setup) that he used so successfully last year! He hit 4 180s in 4 following legs(dont think he hit 1 previously) and won the match!

So did everyone except Taylor & Wade :D

The players championship takes place this weekend in Derby with the first round of action today and Jamie Caven wins the tournament defeating Adrian Lewis 6-2 in the final.

Ex BDO player John Henderson hit a 9 darter in his 2nd round game against Andy Hamilton to earn him a £800 bonus in his whirlwind start to his PDC career.
