Afro or mixed-race hair

Been living for over 5 years in Dublin now and have not yet found a good professional hairdresser in this area. Tried the hairdressers in Moore Street and have contacted other hairdressers but all of them are catering more for real african hair than for any kind of hair (as mixed race hair is different).

I am now wondering have any other people with afro hair or mixed race hair had the same experience. With this I mean that it is hard to find a proper hairdresser where you can make an appointment, get your hair washed and treated without ending up with burns or bad customer service and where they can also really advise you on the different products you can use or even the different ways of maintaining your hair.

Please do contact me if you are in the same situation and would like to see a change. Being Dutch and having travelled worldwide I have seen good hairdressers and professionalism, and in my idea there are none over here yet. If you know anyone, I am all ears.

    Cheers :)

I have the exact same problem - and my hair is more afro/ curly than not. For the last 7 years I have treated/ braided/ dreaded my own and my children's hair. I am not a proffessional by any means but youtube is a wonderful resource. There are also many really good natural hair care tip sites out there.

I avoid Moore Street like the plague. The "hairdressers" are amateurs just like me and seem to only know how to braid hair - that's it. I was also quoted €140 to start dread-locks and that's waaay too much for that kind of service. Not proffessional or inviting at all. My experience would be they are more "market" style. I f you have ever been to a market hair-dresser on the continent of Africa (any country) you will know what I mean.

In saying that, you could always ask for someone to treat your hair privately in your home. It's much cheaper and you have a lot more control, especially if you have your own products. I use Organic Root Stimulator products - they work equally well on curly - non- curly hair.

Bumping! I'm moving to Dublin from the US, and I really would love to know where I can get a decent shampoo, blow dry, and flat iron on my natural hair.

I found that John Adam upstairs in Cleary's is the biz. I have super curly, frizzy hair and they make an amazing job out of it. And it only costs 20 euro! I used to get blow dries in Peter Mark but after being charged 40 euro for a mediocre blow dry, I vowed not to go back!

Is this an independent shop? What is Cleary's? Where is it located? Sorry, for probably, dumb questions, but I am totally new to Ireland and Dublin.

I've recently relocated to Limerick, Ireland. I'm looking for a hairdresser to do my natural hair. I came across this thread and wondered what you have found. Please share!

    Thank you!

Wow, this is an old thread! If you can get yourself over to Dublin, do yourself a favour and make an apt with Saulo in The Curly Look. He is a specialist, only dealing with curly natural hair, and is the only person in Ireland using this approach for cutting and hydrating natural curls. He's a genius/wizard check out the website and FB page for photos and reviews. Prices are reasonable especially considering how long he gives you and the tutorials to care for your curls at home. If I lived in Limerick I would still travel to go there forba cut, well worth the journey. Just book ahead as he seems to be getting booked up 2 months ahead since his secret got out!

I'm so glad you responded! I have made an appointment with Saulo. I'll let you know how it turns out. It's not until September... He must be the bomb-diggity!!!

Does anyone know of a beauty salon that does relaxers in either Cork or Waterford ? I am Caribbean and have long, very curly hair. All I can find are African salons that do extensions and weaves which I don't want. Help !

Hey! How capable are you of doing it yourself...? I see the Afro Caribbean shops here in Dublin sell kits for home use but could be high risk!

    Thanks La GCordy,
Not very capable...not so much risky as very inefficient ! I have tried before and I'm okay with the front, but not the back :-)
Ta any way for your help,
    Stephanie

Hi ladies! I thought I'd share this with all the frizzy hair ladies. I finally found someone who understand my hair type. I had a keratin treatment done by a lady in Dublin that knows her stuff. She uses the best products- Cocochco Brazilian Keratin. PM her for more details or make an appointment. I've attached a few pics of my hair, before and after.

    Find her on FB- Make-up_ALIA
