Would anybody be able to give me some help? I have magnet 2 mb broadband (non wireless). There is a connection in every room of my house. Previously, you could plug any laptop/pc into the connection and hey presto internet no prob. We have magnet tv and phone also.

I think the problem began when my sister plugged her new christmas laptop into a connection downstairs, pulling out the phone connection to do so. All computers were working fine for a few days after this. However a couple of days later she tried to do same and got "the page cannot be displayed" dns error. I also noticed when i tried to use the computer in the office the same thing was happening but it was saying it connected also. Now all laptops are back working but the pc in the office just isn't going onto websites.

Shouldn't you be able to plug any machine into any connection and be able to access the internet. Or does this cause problems?

Any advice/tips appreciated. Tried turning off firewall and tried making new connection!

sound like 2 dhcp servers , disconnect your sisters machine now and run a command prompt

    window key and r together
type cmd in the box and OK
    you have dosprompt

type ipconfig /all , note ip address and gateway and dhcp server address and dns address

    type ipconfig /release

    type ipconfig /renew

type ipconfig /all , note ip address and gateway and dhcp server address and dns address , are they different ??

is the old magnet network working now ?

Thanks for that, why just my sisters laptop? I will try it and let you know if it works.

she has connection sharing on , properties for each network connector until you find it and turn it off :)

get the rest working first and then you have time to find it

I ran ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew and ipconfig/a.ll I got alot of info back like physical address, ip address etc. What does all this mean? When I say connected I mean the 2 computer icon on the bottom right hand of the screen are saying connected but yet i can't surf websites!

Post what came up from ipconfig /all.

Will do tonight. It will take me a while because I'll have to write it down rather than copy and paste because it is on the pc in the office. Is there any stuff i can leave out or is all of the information important?

    Thanks

Of course i did. I ran ipconfig/release/renew/all etc. I just don't understand the results I got cause i'm not very techy. I am going to write the results down tonight and post them because I cannot copy and paste as it is a different machine.

Have you seen a problem like this before? It must be something simple. It's only the PC in the office which isn't surfing.

The DHCP server is giving you a 2 class c mask, rather oddly, but otherwise it seems OK

Now what are the settings on the banjaxed computer, they should be the exact same as the ones there bar the IP address which should be different at the end ...eg not .201 ...

while the key data looks the same there is an anomaly ..Preferred IP..

into network control panel , select the LAN which is the "Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet" and right click then left click on properties

into tcpip on that list , properties

it should say 'obtain ip automatically ' turn that off and put in all zeroes

now click advanced , note and delete any settings in there and press OK , there could be another IP in there which is not preferred .

you are back to the zeroes , change to obtain automatically again , wait a minute

now what happens and what are the ipconfig settings for Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet only ( the others are irrelevant )

Do I do this on the computer in the office which isn't surfing? Will this affect other laptops? eg will I still be able to surf even if i mess up after following your instructions ?

I'm not sure but I think this is a network apadpter "Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet" This doesn't show up on the office computer as I am using this on adapter on my patop

This is the network adapter the pc which isn't working is using Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection

When I go into network connctions the only option available to me is Lan usinig Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection

    Please advise
