Website is fine but keep in mind your not buying your car from the website your buying it from the company that placed the advert. No different than using autotrader.

    Including shipping? (careful here)
I doubt it id assume the price is FOB (free on Board) which means they put it on the ship and you pay for the shipping

CIF is (Carriage insurance and Freight ) Where the insurance and freight is paid for but you'll probably pay for offloading in Dublin. I know i paid on top of this.

Check the VRT before you buy jap VRT on Japanese cars is now insane.

Ill give you this recommendation. Pistonheads.com and english cars are cheaper.

There are plenty of Jap cars already over here to choose from....and Im sure theres some for good prices given the current car market...

I imported many japs few years ago but wouldnt dream of it now....

Why wouldnt you import any more, cause of the VRT.

Alot of the jap imports here have been abused tho IMO. I thought youd be better off import an unmodified one now.

    What car are you after?

Its quite possible you could find an enthusiast either here or in the UK that has taken great care of the car, and with the exchange rate/state of the economy you could grab a real bargain.

Importing from japan has its pitfalls but if its something special you're after it might be worth it.

You'll have to pay VAT too so don't forget to add that in.

Nissan Silvia a '99 or '00 one Spec R. Iv been lookin around for a while now. Im in no hurry to rush in and buy one. Im gona wait till i see the right one. Iv been lookin at carzone and adverts, autotrader, pistonheads. Do you know of any other websites worth a look.

Ye VAT sucks but has to be paid. no way round it if I import

What he said.....you have no guarantee the car you buy in japan will be as good as it looks in photos/engineers reports.

I nearly got stung with buying a Starlet that looked smashing but turned out the gearbox was on the way out....my agent spotted it.

If I was you, I would wait until an Irish/English enthusiasts came up for sale (search the owners forums)....they are in great condition.

Savage car by the way....look the biz

I'd echo the thoughts from previous posters that you should reconsider importing.

The current worldwide economic climate means that buying a car from japan and importing it works out significantly more expensive than it did a year ago.

An example given on another discussion board was a skyline that was brought in this time last year would now cost €8k more to import now.

Also with the current state of the car market in Ireland and the Uk you will find a Spec R s15 here very cheap, there are loads here and loads in the uk and you will find plenty of nice umolested examples.

Also most cars in Japan will have been abused before they are shipped over here just as they may have been abused over here, your not buying a brand new car from Japan and they dont drive s15's over there like grannies!

Ive imported cars from Japan and bought on from a dealer on Tradecarview with no problems. As allready said its not a great time to import. Id search pistonheads , sxoc and other car forums if I was you...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 752 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn!

S15s were all imports so an english import will have the same VRT as it is still calculated on a car first registered in Japan.

There are irish cars on pistonheads but there are allot English cars fs cheep ish due to recession.
At least with an English car you have a guarantee that you can AA check it, have it compression tested, then drive it to a ferry. Allot can happen an import between the auction house and Dublin port.

Ask the following before you buy and find out the answers.
    • How often do you change the oil? (vital)
    • Can i see receipts for services?
    • Are there braided oil and water turbo lines?
    • Had any problems?
    • Is boost smooth (turn off any boost controller any delay in boost and it has a boost leak so walk away as owner should know)
    • Can i see the auction sheet?
    • What Octane fuel did you run it on?
    • What boost will it take? (be wary too much boost is bad I honestly don't know what the upper limit on a 15 is as the turbos were bb Core and better than the s14s T28.)
Note: the above are dependent on level of modification and if the car is remapped or on a different turbo.

The sr20det is a tough engine and one that has been cared for will take high levels of power into the 140k miles mark. One that wont and will be dog rough with no receipts for oil changes.

Ah so its not the cheapest Spec R in the country :)http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/850548.htm

    Both look really nice though...

Doesn't seem worth buying from Japan right now, lots of cars in Ireland and England going cheaply now though.

By buying a car in England your only going to save the vat(import duty) @ 21.5 pc.
Also a little on the shipping.

The above figure are a few weeks old and based on a 60,000km manual registered in january

Im a computer programmer by trade i wrote a small toy to pull them down from ROS.ie. Plus i miss my silvia almost as much as i miss my better half.:)

so u recommend a silvia then. S15 is the only model i like.

Im tempted to get a Sec S jus coz the insurance is 750 on it.
Its over 3k for Spec R

Its over 3k for Spec R

Its the same engine in the S14 and S13. Only minor revisions like variable valve timing, injector sizes ,better turbo, and slight changes to the suspension.
Look it up there's a little bit more to it but its nothing drastic.

There are Sr20Dets running 400+ bhp on stock internals in the British drift championship.

If you want an s15 get an s15 it is defiantly the best looking Sx. If you want one and are willing to spend the money go for it.

If you want the looks without the power a spec S is fine. Its all personal preference. If you want a SpecR and want more power and torque go for it.

TBh 3k insurance + running costs is quite high. Make sure the car doesnt eat your wallet. They are not the cheapest car to run.

One word of caution if you do go for a spec R please drive it slowly especially in the wet. These cars will not forgive you for being any way rough with the go faster peddle.

Search around sxoc. Also go say hello the ireland section will happily help you out.
