Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Protecting connection strength

    Hey,
    I was wondering if there was a way to guarantee a certain speed when sharing a router? For example, if someone is downloading a big file, it could make the connection too weak for the other person. If there was a way to ensure a quota of speed for both, it'd be more fair and both could use the net at the same time without risk of disconnecting.

    Does anything like this exist?

    If you use a download manager or Torrent program, most have integrated "Speed Limit" modes which work great, I have my 6meg connection to drop to 5 Meg if in speed limit mode which frees up 1 meg for other family users if there on,

    Thanks for the reply. It's my flatmate who would be downloading things and as far as I know he would stream directly off the net, which wouldn't have speed settings.

    I was hoping there was a way to do it via the router itself or something.

    Depending on the make of the router, there should be some QOS (Quality of Service) options on there.

    Basically you can assign a percentage of the available bandwidth to certain computers.

    What's the make of router? Log into the router via HTTP and have a look around.

    As Myxomatosis said, QOS is how this is achieved.

    Its not a massively common feature in the bog-standard home network routers.

    If you're lucky, you may have a router which is capable of being flashed with either Tomato or DD-WRT firmware, both of which can do QOS.
