In the UK if the father doesn't support the child, the Child Support Agency direct his employer to deduct the money from his wages.

Proper order too, if you get someone up the duff, accept the responsibilites that come with children

Any way every child should have the chance to succed in life without being held back by poverty.

On the other hand it simply isn't fair that people who pay taxes and work hard are losing their homes while others are given a free house no questions asked.

Don't some single mothers have a fella living with them? Is he entitiled to live in a free house as well?

You know what I find more appalling than all of this?

The lack of basic math skills being shown in this thread.

    1 plus 1 is 2, 2 plus 2 is 4, 4 plus 4 is....7.2m

Yes and Yes, if the Council/SW are informed. No, if they aren't aware.

The reason it's €720 Million is due to the high cost of rents and no Govt. limits on them.

I think it these times it is prudent that the Government re-examine many of the social welfare benefits available today. Don't get me wrong, many are well entitled to get money off the state and am delighted that we live in welfare country yet I cannot help thinking that many schemes they have in place are far too generous.

I know a single mum of one child with a 3 bed house to herself!!! You can hear day in and day out of people struggling to find adequate social housing and there are 2 beds free in that house..
There is a lot of local women who get the unmarried mothers allowance yet openly admit they are living with the fathers of their children. When asked will they be getting married tell you the benefits would be far less as a married woman..
If they tightened up on welfare fraud, i.e people doing nixers etc for cash and claiming dole I reckon we would save a fortune as well.

On the other hand plenty of people who have lost their jobs are struggling to make ends meet and get what they are entitled to off the state.
In the hard times it is necessary that the Government make the wisest and fairest decisions.

With approx 60,000 single mothers claming around 1000 per month in rent allowance is it now time to look at this allowance? do the maths 60,000 x 1000 per month x 12 months...........A lot of money.

Where are you getting the figures of approx 60k lone mothers receiving 'around' €1000 per month rent supplement?

Just force the daddies to support their offspring, problem solved.

Yeah, that's always a mystery to me.

Years ago (and I'm going backto the 40's & 50's) a lot of men buggered off to England, having gotten a girl pregnant back in Ireland. On request from the girls family, and our Government, the British Authorities were able to track down these men in most cases, particularlly if they'd joined the Armed Forces, and deduct a % from their wages, which was sent to the girls family to support the child.

I'm not making this up, it happened to my uncle.

There's another issue about some girls not wanting the fathers name on the birth cert though, or so i understand. Otherwise I can't see why this cannot be done.

True, but The_Dazzler said "Nobody can fcuking add"

not "Nobody can fcuking repeatedly add".

Surely if they could add once, they could add repeatedly? So it was unnecessary to include the word "repeatedly".

    Not necessarily.

They might have ADD or something...you can add alright, but after that you'd lose interest and go chase a buterfly or something.

And butterfly chasing is EXACTLY the reason we're stuck in the middle of a ****ing recession! goddamn non-repeat adders.

Look for big thick gold earrings.
    Nike tracksuits.
More than one baby by different guys.

Apart from the earrings you're pretty much talking about Ulrika Jonsson. You can't judge a book by its cover. (Maybe that's a bad example, but it's the first one that came to mind.)

I'd love to see a higher tax band introduced. Then less could be taken from those who have less, and more from those who have much more.

HOw much does the Seanad cost every year? There's some money that would be put to better use even if Lenihan invested it in magic beans

I agree, I know of many people who have had kid's and enjoy the life of a wag. I hate that the people that actually need the money vary rarley get it. It's unfair that Mary Jo and John Paul live easy, eat take-aways,get high on my money while I work,Put Myself and Missus trough college, so I can hope for a better life for myself and her, while her mates openly take the piss outta everything. The Government will never wise up. The bleeding hearts **** up the schools/law and order/hostpitals/ but continue to giver the silent majority the shaft while MJ and JP enjoy there state provided house and books for the scrote kid's! Bull****.
