Upgrading iPod but preserving iTunes stats?

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with this... I've just purchased a new iPod Classic, upgrading from an old 60gb iPod Video. Before I begin any form of transfer of music, does anyone know if there is some way to preserve the stats (play counts, playlists etc) from my iTunes for the new iPod? Is it simply a case…

Is it simply a case of backing up the library file or is there more to it than this. Oh, and I'm on a Mac too, if that's any help?
