Is there any point? I'm interested in doing a course but I have no decent work experience in that area, I did do it in the LC and it was the subject I did the best in but since the LC(5 years or so now) I havent done anything work related to it. The only interest I've kept up in it has been reading a few books in it etc. What are the chances of me being given a place?

Depennding on what course it is, maybe you should do an access course first and take it from there.

Access courses are courses that are designed to give people an opportunity to see whats involved in college life and study for a year before committing to a degree course. In some courses you get a chance to see whats involved in courses across all subject areas, science, humanities, etc, some focus on a particular subject field.
They are useful to people who have been out of formal education for many years or to others like yourself who are interested in a subject area but aren't sure that its really for them.

    E.G
UCD runs an access course in Commerce among others:http://www.ucd.ie/adulted/access/index.html

Trinity college also runs the Trinty Access Programme for both Adults and students from non traditional backgrounds: http://www.tcd.ie/Trinity_Access/

NUI Maynooth also offers an Access programme: http://access.nuim.ie/

This isn't an exhaustive list, other colleges and universities also offer such programmes.
