hi, am travelling to new zealand next week for two months. have spent the last two months driving around australia so dont really want to rent a car or van again. was thinking of doing the magic bus tour. but just wondering has anyone any recommendations for cheap hostels in the main towns we would be in?

spent a fair amount of money in australia (flashpacking!!) so really want to enjoy new zealand as cheaply as possible. will probably spend a few nights in each of the main/popular spots because we have plenty of time. oh and am doing both north and south islands. any ideas?

If you do the magic tour they prefer you to pick certain hostels that are in the magic book. You can pick others if you want but the drivers don't have to pick you up or drop you off at them. We had booked some hostels that were not on the list and the driver was grumbling a bit about it.
Anyway the crash palace in Rotorua was quite good it had a hot pool and the staff were really helpful. Also the rainbow lodge in Taupo was really good value we had a double room with a tv and bathroom for about 60$NZ.

I would definately recommend renting out a cheap small car, buying a BBH hostel card and you will have way more freedom to go wherever you want. Heard those buses might only be able to pick you up at a horribly early time. If your flying into Christchurch "Foley Towers" fixed us up with a cheap car deal (quality car rentals, i think) & some new zealand green if its what ur after:P.
