Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Players Who Could Have Played For Ireland

Just watching Cahill last night against Arsenal and I realised, from my Football Manager days I think, that his second nationality is Irish, I'm sure this would mean he could of played for Ireland. I think Rooney is in the same boat, is there a good list anywhere of these kind of men or can I get people to just start firing them off the top of their heads?

I hate myself for doing this, but it's 'could have' not 'could of'.

On topic, Vinnie Jones was one that was widely reported as eligible to play for Ireland before he declared for Wales.

I think your thinking of Gary Cahill now with Bolton former Villa player, could of declared.

    Chris Armstrong

Wasn't there a saga surrounding Stan Collymore as well, or am I merging him with the above?

No, I was about to say Collymore myself.

I remember both being mentioned, with Armstrong having greater validity than Collymore I think.

Jack Charlton said one day that he was watching Collymore when he was playing for Southend, and someone took it up that he was scouting him for an Ireland call up.

He wanted to play for Ireland and asked if he could before the 2002 world cup. FIFA wouldn't allow him to change his nationality from Australian to Irish. Check the Tim Cahill thread from a few weeks ago...

No its true,I remember it well..
Kitson has an Irish grandparent, and in January 2006 Steve Staunton, upon his appointment as the manager of the Republic of Ireland national football team team, announced his intention to persuade Kitson to represent Ireland in international football,

Would have been class: the only out-and-out ginger on the Irish team being born in England.

McShane not a true ginger imo

    Remember Steve Bruce alright.

Also and I might be wrong but I thought Robbie Fowler was eligible via his Irish mother???

Darren Fletcher would have been quality for Ireland.

I know Wayne Rooney's brothers have represented Ireland at U-21 and other levels is this a unique case where one brother plays for one country and the other for a different one?

No, i dont think so, i remember the question being asked not so long ago on the forum, when put about the Ferdinand brothers,

i think its the De Guzman Brothers, one for Canada and one for the Netherlands. there might have been more

If the Gallen brothers of the early 1990s were any good it may have happened.

They were from London and one, Kevin, declared for England and the other(s) for Ireland.

Kevin Gallen has spent years playing in Championship and below, even some time in Premiership when QPR where there, and made England U-21 appearances, his brother(s) never made it beyond QPR reserves though I reckon.

As said, Kitson did qualify. There was a lot of 'will he, won't he' bollox at the time. I was doing a sports show for my college radio station and decided to get an answer straight from the horses mouth. Rang Reading Football Club's media officer and told him I was from an Irish national station and wanted to clear it up with Dave. He said he'd suss it out. Anyway, 5 minutes before we went on air I got a call on my mobile. It was Dave Kitson. Got him on air and asked him straight out and he said no as he didn't feel Irish enough and it would be an insult to the nation if he did.

That story didn't come out in the papers until two days later.
