Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Today looked nuts! I have some shots from the shakedown but I haven't had a chance to process anything yet. But I have a better idea what I want to try differently on Sunday.

Friday - Day 2, Stage 5, bloody cold and rainy afternoon. Two hours standing in mud. And the picture is the link to the whole set on my Flickr.

Bah. I wish my life was occasionally less busy so I could make it busy with this stuff.

Not going to make it tomorrow morning; can't face getting up early enough to make it up for even the last stage. Pity...

that being said, they look great V.

If i were you i'd drop the ISO up the aperture(maybe) and get to a shutter speed where you can pan with the car and get a real feeling of movement from the shots,Not bad though

    Edit:Like this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/thonda/3239436929/in/set-72157613186488020/

I knew that I have only one stage to go, therefore I have tried to get reasonably sharp pictures. And I should have gone higher with the ISO, because most of the pictures are not as sharp as I would like to have them.
Panning was in my plans, but I was already shaking cold there. Two hours ankle deep in cold mud showed me that three pair of socks in my wellies are not enough. But thanks for suggestion.
Next time, if it happens again.

what setting you lot using, i got some limited manual setting on my camera just want to find out around wat setting would be best for taking shots of cars, going to the lough gill stage tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

I usualy meter light using integral metering for the whole scene in Av mode to find out what speed I could get. Next is increasing ISO to get acceptable shutter speed. (Note to myself - 1/400 was maybe a little too long slow for cars.)
Once I get the settings right, I switch to Manual because panning or car's lights shining into the lense could mess with metering. I take few test shots, check the histogram and that's it.
I have checked all pictures after each car (preview with histogram - clouds changed the light condition about three times) and deleted the sh;te ones.

    The settings were:
    Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
    Aperture: f/2.8
    Focal Length: 70 mm
    ISO Speed: 500
    Exposure Mode: Manual
    White Balance: Auto

Edit: You can see all the settings on Flickr, just go to "More Properties" at each picture.

No worries, nobody mentioned ignorance. However I wish I could call the Friday's weather a "broad daylight" :D Heavy clouds and constant rain. It was dark-ish.
Cars are moving objects. And I knew that I had only one chance to capture them. Therefore I have decided not to try panning, but to get sharp shots. Sharp - frozen time.
Cars are moving objects and I was moving my camera too. And the only way how to get sharp pictures is to get as short exposure time as possible.
And the thing with the ISO - it does not matter what ISO you use on 5D ;)

eirlink: (D)SLRs just give you the option to set everything on your own. Compact cameras are easier to use, so they tend to set as much as possible on their own. I have described what I did. I could recommend selecting the Sport mode (or Shutter or Aperture Priority modes - if you have them on your camera). Pre-focusing on some place on the track could also help.
And don't forget - it is digital, you are shooting for free, so shoot, try different settings, shoot, shoot, shoot...

A few more pics from today. I managed to get and close with the drivers at the start of SS18 Donegal Bay when they stopped for a quick chat before the stage.

was that at the sharp hairpin turn? great shot

just noticed the shadow of the sign post and photographer, has to be the hairpin lol, i was a little disapointed at the part of the stage, i had hoped they would take the corner a little fast but it was a good place to be, when i went out to run the stage last night i found a good place to stand but i got there late and had to do with where i was

Ya thats the one. I couldnt get close enough to get a good view, had to crop it down. Huge crowd at that corner, but sooo cold. I was a bit disappointed too at the corner, so left early to go to Donegal Bay, running into Loeb, Sordo and Hirvonen about 200 yards before the start where they stopped for a quick chat. That made my day.

Thanks Calina. Not too often you can get that close to the drivers and cars.

Ya, my hands feet were numb by the time i left. I left before she made an appearance. I think everybody was waiting for someone to hit that yield sign. There were some very close calls, Atkinson being from my perspective less than a few inches from losing his rear wing. Did anyone scrape it in the end?

    Hey all,

First post here. My girlfriend got me my first "real" camera for my last birthday (Canon 450d). It's such a big step up from the point and shoot ones i've always had and i'm still struggling to get the hang of all the settings and stuff. :) Today was my very first rally and my first time photographing something that moves faster than my dog (who's 12 and sleeps 18 hours a day!!) It was SO much harder than I thought. Most of my shots were nowhere near focus but I got one or two that I was happy with. Here are the best of a bad lot :) Any advice / constructive criticism will be really appreciated!

Now i'm no where near a pro at taking rally pics but i've been at 3-4 local ones,
One thing i can see from your exif data on pix.ie your shutter speed was abit slow,i know it was gloomy day but i'm sure the 450D could of handled iso 800 ok and you would of got slightly better shutter speeds

The other things to do when you face a dark gloomy day with slow glass is to practice panning, the images can sometimes look 100% better because they are sharper and you get a real feeling of speed, and your atention is solely focused on the car because the backgroud is blurry

For panning you can really drop the shutter speed
I shot this last year at 300mm
and my shutter was only 1/30
    2078999030_79fb21af39.jpg

If you do want to shoot more rallies pratice panning with dogs and cars then if you go to a rally where the weather is gloomy you'll get good shots,If the weather is good your shots would look great because the brighter conditions would give you a quick shutter speed which would freeze the action
