I will resist the temptation to post up Cliff Burton and instead will start with one of the founding members of Megadeth, Dave Ellefson.

The ( now ex) bassist from Ephel Duath is pretty good imo. I have been trying to find out what he has done since Ephel Duath. Does anyone know ?
Whoever played Bass on Mate, Fee, Kill, Repeat by Slipknot was pretty good ( I think it was Paul Grayl, but I'm open to correction. ) . You need to listen to at least 2 thirds of the song before you make up your mind.
And of course, you gotta give a mention to Fieldy from Korn. Sure he may not be the most technically excellent player , but he sure has braught a bit to the bass world.

Phil... this is my fave song of all time and altho he my not have been as technically talented as some of the people so far on this thread, he had a sound of his own, stlye of his own and not to mention soul... when I think of this song and hear it in my head, all I can hear is the base line towards the end of the guitar solo. Great stuff.:)

I know he really doesnt do solos live or anything but Steve Harris is such an influence on so may people and the clanking galloping sound he is famous for is just savage; also he uses double stops and chords in a lot of songs
