No surprise here, most of us thought that Affliction wouldnt last the year, but a rumor going around that it may sooner rather than later. This of course refers to the MMA shows and not the t-shirt business. Apparently Affliction approached the UFC looking to stop doing shows in exchange for being allowed back into the Octagon.

I dont know if its true, but I do know that I want Belfort and Fedor in the UFC. On the other hand, UFC as the only game in town is not good for MMA in the long run.

    http://www.themmapost.com/2009/01/affliction-mma-is-done-strong-rumor.html

"from Michael Rome: I have been digging at this story for the last 3 or 4 hours since I first heard it. I believe it to be true. I learned in the last hour from someone high up at the UFC that Lorenzo Fertitta was contacted today by Affliction looking for a "beneficial" way out. Realistically, they want back in the Octagon.

The problem for Affliction is they have very little to offer Zuffa. The contracts for their fighters are non transferrable, and the video library has little value. An insider at Zuffa told me, "the only way Zuffa will settle is with some sort of equity stake in Affliction (clothing)...at the end of the day Affliction does not have a fighter that the UFC needs, just 2-3 that would be nice to have."

With MMA been a young sport, and some member's of the media thinking the fights are predetermined like WWE, the sport does not get the good hones coverage it deserves. If Affliction does go under it will not be the best thing for MMA and UFC. UFC is where all the top fighters go because that is where the money is. With UFC and Pride under the same flag competition and getting the best fighter and top ref's is hard.

I say the last Affliction event and it was excellent. Compaction that the MMA needs to help the sport grow in a positive direction.

The masses think the sport has thugs beating each other into a pulp. Well that is kinda true. It was at the start. Now it is a skill something for the true combat sport fan to enjoy. It is two highly trained men pitting there skills in a safe well controlled involvement.

Some people that do not approve of the sport never will. These people don’t see the skill involved.

Affliction if it survives will and can give the UFC a run for its money. It is a pity Affliction came out as the world economy is going tits up. The UFC is still not in an operating profit.

Years ago WWE bought WCW and soon after that "Pro" wrestling became a joke. Well a bigger joke.

I saw Donald Trump in the crowd and getting his photo getting taken at the end with fighters. May be his millions will row in behind the sport???

The UFC needs competition and strong competition. From on MMA fan I hope Affliction stays around and grows strong.

Personally I havent seen this media coverage you are refering to. If anything the media generally speaking thinks it is too real.

Not if they carry on promoting the way they do.

Affliction going has very, very little to with world economy. Rampant over spending was the primary problem.

What? I dont know where you get your facts but they extremely wrong.

Tom Atentio: Rumors are false; Affliction MMA here to stay

“The rumors are just that, rumors, they’re not true, there’s no truth to it…. I have Donald Trump behind me, I have Golden Boy Promotions behind me, I have M-1, where are we going? People love to build you up, but they love to watch you fall even more and hopefully I’m not that guy. I’ve always maintained that I’ve taken the high road, I don’t talk **** about people. I have a lot going on right now with Trump, Golden Boy and M-1 and things are moving forward…. Right now, I’m learning a lot about this business. I’ve been honest from day one and right now, I’m going to sit down with Golden Boy, M-1 and Mr. Trump and we’re going to figure out how we’re going forward. We’re going to do events every three or four months. The bottom line is, this is only our second event, let me learn, let me do what I’m doing, but I must be doing something right because someone is starting these rumors.”

Affliction Entertainment Group Vice President, Tom Atencio, today took to the late-night airwaves to squash rumors that pegged his promotion as being “done.” Speculation has swirled that the upstart promotion is hemorraghing money after high-priced shows such as “Banned” and “Day of Reckoning” and is looking for a way out of the fight game. Not so fast, says Mr. Atencio, there is more to come.

"Despite the success, the UFC was still experiencing financial deficits, and by 2004, Zuffa had $34 million of losses since the purchase"

    So much wrong with post????

Trump is a billionaire thing he might be able to put a few dollars into a company or two.

Just because a company has flashing lights and fancy girls does not mean it making money.

Affliction has little to do with the work economy. TRUE. My bad. BUT
Affliction like every company needs MONEY. if no large company is spending money Affliction will not get sponsorship.

    eh it's 2009 now

I know.... I am not saying the company is loosing money. But Zuffa have bought pride and another MMA promotion. This has cost them money. So The company may not be in the black but are making money. The last post was in 2004

There making money. They wouldn't be operating if they ween't the fertit'a own a successful casino chain and would lost lose money just to keep it floating like they did at the very start, they even considered selling at one point.

By the sounds or this you don’t read the business papers.

Firstly your English is horrible and you shouldn’t be using personal insults on here. Throwing money at Affliction will not help it as they will only squander it.

    a) you contradicted yourself here

    b) The line "So The company may not be in the black but are making money"
    makes no sense

    c) The Ultimate Fighter started one year after 2004, a show which is credited and was designed for the purpose of turning UFC around financially.

    d) I’ve been doing a lot of reading about UFC recently and its Friday night so pardon if my stat isn’t exact. But I read either in the Wrestling Observer or Total MMA that UFC made $200 million in profit in either 2007 or 2008. The company is valued at a $1 billion and it was only bought for $7 million in 2001 by Zuffa.

    e) You are either totally out of your depth here or I hope for humanity’s sake you are just a troll.

I'm sorry if it's true, I really enjoyed the affliction card last weekend. It had great fights and great production except for that incredibly strange announcer guy who couldn't say 'corner' right.

Can't say I'm surprised after I heard 5million was thrown de la Hoya's way just for appearing.

Isn't golden buy in business with them? I doubt delahoya gets 5 mil for showing up to shows he has financial intrests in

Saying 5 million sounds better PR wise.

The 5 million thing was bogus. It was a comment dropped by a boxing commentator, who has something against MMA. He asked why Oscar wasnt around, and he was told that Affliction were spending $5m on a show, so Oscar had to be there to help them promote it.

    A few thoughts,

Donmaga1 clearly isnt a native english speaker so no need to jump down his neck over every little point, and the multiquoting is irritating.

Afflicition can lose money on all their shows as long as they make it up from selling t-shirts.

Trump is unlikely to put money into Affliciton imo, hes under pressure, and afaik is receiving a fee from afflicition for promotional work.

As for the Ferttita's Station Casino's, they could be in default by the end of the weekend. The price you will pay for doing a top of the market MBO, with high leverage at a time of cheap short term borrowing.

That would be a shame. I enjoyed their last show more than the last 2-3 UFC Cards.
