Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    My club: Blackburn Rovers

    Tim Flowers

    Lucas Neill
    Colin Hendry
    Kevin Moran
    Graeme LeSaux

    David Batty

    David Bentley
    Tugay Kerimoglu
    Damien Duff

    Alan Shearer

    Zubi

    --L. Enrique---Koeman---Nadal
    Sergi--

    Guardiola

    Maradonna
    Laudrup
    Stoichkov-

    Cruyff
    Romario

    Subs;
    Zamora - GK
    Ramallets – GK
    Puyol - CB
    Goikoetxea - CB
    Rivaldo - LM
    Ronaldo - CF
    Figo - rm
    Hagi – CM
    Bakero - AM
    Kubala – CF
    Alcantara - CF
    Ronaldinho - CF

Picking the forwards is actually impossible, try picking from Maradonna, Alcantara, Romario, Laudrup, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Stoichkov, Ronaldinho, Kubala, Figo and Cruyff. Actually impossible.

Edit- Realistically Ronaldo doesn't deserve to get an all time spot considering he only played for one season, even if it was the best season he ever played.

    Manchester United:

    ..........................................Peter Schmeichel......................................
    Gary Neville...........Nemanjaa Vidic.............Jaap Stam..............Denis Irwin

    C. Ronaldo............Paul Scholes.................Roy Keane..............George Best

    .........................Denis Law......................Wayne Rooney........................

    Subs:
    Edwin Van Der Sar/Alex Stepney
    Patrice Evra/Rio Ferdinand
    Duncan Edwards/Bobby Charlton/Ryan Giggs/Bryan Robson/Paddy Crerand
Eric Cantona/Ruud Van Nistelrooy/Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Greatest talent unfulfilled at United).

I'm sure I left out loads of fantastic players but I don't think many teams would stand a chance against the starting line up. Duncan Edwards and Bobby Charlton would probably be in midfield but I never saw them play.

!!! I explained that the two of them could slot right in for Scholes/Keane but I chose Scholes/Keane purely because I have followed their careers and watched them my whole life and seen the incedible things they have both done. I can't say the same of Charlton/Edwards. I have only read about them or seen clips. They are all magnificent midfielders, Robson too.

Quite impossible to compile a starting 11 or even 3 of them so many stars there have been!

    Ray Clemence
    Phil Neal---Alan Hansen-Sami Hyypia-Alan Kennedy
    Billy Liddell--Jan Molby--Graeme Souness-John Barnes
    Kenny Dalglish--Robbie Fowler

Subs : Grobellaar (yes!), Steve Staunton, Mark Laurenson, Emlyn Hughes, Steven Gerrard, Ian Rush, Michael Owen

Good point, and one I agree with. I also tried to only include players I grew up watching, otherwise I'd have to put in Alcantara, can't argue with 327 goals in 327 appearances really.

he would probably say the same about the lack of Messi in your squad. Either are argueably the best player in the world and therefore includable but id probably only include them in a few years myself esp Messi as Barca have so many options as emphasised by the full squad you did as apposed to just a best XI

40+ goals last season and already 11 this season having being injured for a lot of it. He's a remarkable footballer and will only get better as he matures.

My problem with your team is that theres no point in referring to it as the best team of United ever, when its pretty much just the best team ever from your lifetime. Makes no sense even posting one really.

Messi will eventually be there for sure, but I'd rather let him do the talking on the pitch for the next few years before I throw him in with the likes of Cruyff and Romario. In 10 years time lets hope he is not only included in the Barca all time XI, but the worlds all time XI.

It was between him and Maradona mate, considering Maradona was arguably the greatest player ever to grace a football field, I thought I'd reconsider ignore my selection progress just once. That alright with you? :pac:

So what? I'm sure if you posted a team there's someone out there a little older who would criticise some of your inclusions. Even if someone like Charlton should be in there, what's the point of k4t including him if he has never ever seen him play?

That's the problem with this forum these days, superiority complexes left right and centre. This is all about your opinion, fair enough if you want a debate, but there's no point in belittling with comments like "No offence, but are you 12?".

I don't support United, it'd be pretty hard for me to post the best Shelbourne team ever, I wouldn't have any sort of access to the teams before my time. And you can say IMO all you want, but theres no real point in having an opinion on something if it isn't an informed 1. Which given the ridiculous slant towards the last 10 years, it definitely doesn't seem to be. If someone started supporting football this year, should they just post the current first 11?

It isn't a superiority complex at all, theres just no point at all in having an opinion on the best team ever, if you only have a knowledge of the last 10 years.

No, other people have taken the time to watch the old teams. If you only know the modern teams, theres actually no point in posting it as the best eleven ever, would just make the thread stupid.

Good point but TBH if you are a real supporter of your club knowing the clubs history is part and parcel of being a supporter. For god's sake even the girlfriend who knows next to nothing about football is having a giggle here beside me with someone saying Bobby Charlton is'nt in a best ever man u eleven. Guess times are a changing and all that.

id have something similar, not best ever tho of course my lifetime but id make a couple of swaps

Southgate Out A.Wright/Delaney In (need a rb Laursen & McGrath to be the ultimate CB pairing).
    Townsend Out Ian Taylor In
Atkinson Out maybe Saunders In (hopefully Gabby in the future)
Maybe Ginola Out too for a RM (i know Young could go there) or for Merson and alter the formation.

    maybe something like this:

    ...........................Bosnich

    A.Wright.......McGrath.....Laursen....Staunton

    ...............Taylor....Merson...Barry..............

    ......................A.Young (free-role)............
    .............Yorke.............Saunders.............

not the best all time Villa XI at all although but i would have loved to see that CB pairing

Couldnt possibly attempt to put an "all time" team together, it would just be from what Ive heard and been told, not what Ive seen for myself.

Well yeah, makes more sense, being 21 I only have limited "viewing time" of the actual team in real time, you can go back so far and see certain players but after that its just what was written/said about people, and more opinions. So its not really what you think the best 11 is, but what you've been told are very very good players and players youve seen yourself.

Kinda defeats the purpose of having an opinion on a best 11, when you are using someone elses opionion to include a player you've never seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I dunno, I don't agree that you can only really include players you yourself have seen. If I was to choose the greatest Irish political leader of all time for example I sure as hell wouldn't only be choosing from the group that I've seen in my lifetime. Perish the thought. (shudder)

I think the key is to be able to distinguish between myth and reality. Admittedly this is difficult when dealing with players you haven't seen in your lifetime but I don't think it's impossible.

I think it would be pretty disappointing if the next generation of fans were to leave out guys like Roy Keane and Denis Irwin from a list like this purely because they never got to see them live. I would like to think this generation of United fans, and not just United fans but Irish fans in general, will make future generations know how special these players were.

That's just my view on it.

It's not an 'All Time XI' as I already said. It's from my time supporting them (19 years). We haven't exactly been the most successful during that period and he the most naturally talented player I've ever seen in a blue shirt.

The likes of Bell, Lee, Trautmann, Summerbee (Mike not Nicky) and Power all probably deserve a place but I don't know how anyone can judge players they've never actually seen play a game.

i think youd have to throw in colin bell regardless of seeing him or not a brilliant midfielder even without his two sidekicks lee and summerbee .
i was wondering would dennis law ever make an all star 11 or would he be overlooked because of his affiliation with utd
