Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My camera has decided that it doesn't like working when it's cold, so my range is limited to what's directly outside my front door.

Wow, while obviously that's not true, it's sad that som jobsworth in the park services would say it is.

    Hi and welcome,

Check out the FAQ in the stickies - there's a tutorial in there which shows you how. Basically you need to wrap the image url with IMG tags - but its all there in the tutorial.

    Cheers.

great photos guys - I'd be most grateful if anyone could get a landscape pic of the Dublin mountains this morning - they looked stunning with the snow still sitting on the trees and the blue skies...

I'm in work so can't get out - many thanks!

Makes a strange change for us in Sligo not to get the rough weather! We've had sun all week, while the East ground to a halt. Yesterday was the first chance I got to take some Snow shots, and then only on high ground.

Snowline, with the mountain tops hidden by snowclouds.

Lost my lens hood in the snow too, but found it the next morning, oh and i got so much snow on the lens
Poor camera. I was the guy with snowball in hand camera in the other chasing people! Later on in the night we made a snowman over 6ft tall. Have a photo but Im afraid at that stage the simple photography skills I had, (i.e point and shoot), were long gone

    :pac:
    Good Times

oh oh on another note - anyone know any good vantage points to get a sweeping view of the dublin mountains without the need of a telephoto lens. I want to try a panorama tomorrow.

Guys 'n Gals , I think this needs to be added with the weekend looming.

There is HUGE amounts of snow on the mountains. Please please please, don't become another emergency and take your pictures in appropriate clothing.

Drifts in the mountains are bloody dangerous.

If you are gonna hit the mountains to take some pics please make sure you are equipped for the worst.

/here ends the public service announcement.

What kind of lens did you use and what distance were you from the birdie? Yes, Im a total newbie.

The lens is a Sigma 70-300mm - their cheapy model! Its a bit worn at this stage and grinds a bit on autofocus but I love the bokeh it gives - tis not very contrasty though and generally i end up adding lots in PP.

Distance was about 15ft. I was indoor and he/she was searching for a bit of food landed on the window sil and walked along.

The one above is shot through a patio glass door - if you look closely you'll see a lot of smudge's and snow/frosting on the glass pane but it turned out not too bad i'd guess. I must clone out those smudges :)

Above shot at 300mm which reports back as 450mm in a 35mm equivalent.

^I bout that lens 2nd hand a couple of weeks ago. Its dead cheap for a lens of that telephoto power and yes its auto-focus is slow and it lacks image stabilisation but its a great lens for the price! It does lack contrast and sharpness but that can easily be fixed with some pp.
And for the auto focus issues, i first focus it manually and then switch to AF for the camera to make it sharper. Its macro function is quite good too!

    Mount Leinster

    3260966974_5bfffcc1e4.jpg

This was shot from the ring road in Kilkenny where its actually quite mild and dry, and this too was shot with the super cheap and cheerful Sigma 70-300. I tried using my fancy Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 first but I was just too far away.
