And The Examiner's new Kerry dual star Johnny Buckley got no run out,Eamonn Fitzmaurice must have rang Ciaran Carey and told him not to play him

Very impressed by Kerry today, some impressive shooting and from long range too. A fortunate goal mid-way through the first half set the scene for Kerry and they never looked back. The Kerry no.12 was MOTM.

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B: Kerry 1-24 Laois 2-14

    By Paul Keane

There'll undoubtedly be stiffer battles ahead but Kerry's first outing as a Division 1B team following promotion went exactly to plan with a surprisingly comfortable seven-point win in Portlaoise.
Experienced forward Shane Nolan led the scoring in heavy conditions with 0-8 but it was a strong all around display in their first league outing under Limerick legend Ciarán Carey.

It was also Kerry's first game in the upper tier after their impressive promotion from Division 2A last season and they performed well, leading from Mikey Boyle's 14th minute goal until full-time.

The standard will rise sharply next weekend when Kerry take on Limerick in Tralee while Laois, who lost Charlie Dwyer to a 70th minute red card, play Offaly in a midlands derby in Round 2.

Kerry looked sharp and focused throughout and clearly targeted the tie as a great opportunity to, firstly, build early season morale and, more importantly, score a victory to give them a great chance of staying in Division 1B.

The bottom two teams in the division will contest a relegation play-off later in the campaign so both camps realised that a win here, and one more elsewhere, could be enough to avoid the bottom two.

The visiting Kingdom looked full of motivation and put together the more slick and attacking hurling in the opening half.

Laois played with the aid of the stiff wind and launched over the majority of their points from distance with eye catching scores from Dwyer, Ciaran Collier and Matthew Whelan.

Kerry, in contrast, worked more openings closer to goal and were unlucky not to score more than just one first-half goal.

Boyle scored that in the 14th minute with a shot on the right of goals that sneaked in at the near post.

But Jack Goulding, an All-Ireland minor football medal winner last year, also struck the bar while Nolan threatened with a probing run.

Clare native Patrick Kelly scored two points while free-taker Nolan and Boyle were on the mark to leave Kerry marginally ahead at half-time, 1-11 to 1-10.

Laois manager Séamas Plunkett spoke in his programme notes about the team's inexperience with several retirements and Willie Hyland and Zane Keenan also unavailable.

His worst fears were confirmed as Kerry pulled ominously clear after the restart, firstly scoring three points without reply and then adding a burst of five.

Goulding scored some beauties from either wing while Michael O'Leary, Colum Harty and sub John Griffin all piled the pressure on Laois with scores.

Defender Cahir Healy pulled back a late goal for Laois when he slotted a fine shot to the top right corner from 13 metres out.But it was mere consolation and a bad day for the hosts was compounded by Dwyer's late dismissal.

Just showed it now, interviewed Ciaran Carey and fairly decent analysis of the hurling scene - of course Sheedy did help Eamon Kelly out for a while last year.

very impressive scoreline away from home , 25 scores , the same as limerick last night against wexford , also the same score tally of 27 points as clare today against offaly in ennis fantastic introduction to division 1B , its important they remain competitive scoring average will be crucial in determining a play off place and a relegation play off

I had the pleasure of seeing the under 21's training tonight. Watching Jack and the coaching team was brilliant. The intensity by the lads was fantastic. Brilliant to see.

Where were they training? Was reading Mike Quirkes column yesterday the Seniors had to head to Banna Strand last weekend to train due to the unavailability of pitches.

Killarney Celtic FC facilities. My own team had training also and the manager wanted us to see how they kept the intensity up and talking was a big thing. It was fantastic to watch though and our team definitely learnt a few things in the few minutes we watched.

Also heard about the seniors going to beaches to train. Hardly surprising that pitches aren't available given the weather we've had.

Damian Stack of The Kerryman met with the new Kerry Hurling Captain Daniel Collins

As he bestrode Abbeydorney like a colossus you really had to take a moment to admire how far he’d come.
At just twenty one years of age he was out there prompting and prodding, pulling strings, driving forward, the leader, the talisman. Daniel Collins always had something a little bit special about him and here was the proof of it.

To dominate a county final in the manner in which he was takes poise and authority and no little skill. It takes more even than that. It usually takes experience and, while Collins wasn’t exactly inexperienced, this was a performance to belie his years.
For a long time Kilmoyley looked to Shane Brick in a crunch. True enough they had leaders elsewhere on the pitch, players like Tom Murnane, Ian Brick, Padraig Regan, but without Brick to inspire they lacked something.

Call it inspiration, call it whatever you like, without Brick – and the steady stream of points from placed ball that he provided – Kilmoyley weren’t the team they once were and couldn’t hope to be again until somebody stepped up to the plate to replace him.
That sunny September Sunday Collins did. He stepped up and Kilmoyley once again became kings of the Kingdom. No coincidence there. From just in front of the Kilmoyley half-back line he ran the show, delivered two goals (one a little fortuitous, the other less so) and ten points (nine frees).
The man of the match award followed and a couple of months after that again the captaincy of the Kingdom. He was the obvious choice. Still new manager Ciarán Carey wasn’t just going to spring it on him. First he had to get him on board with the idea.
When Carey raised the idea with him he did so on the basis that the leadership he’d provide would be on the pitch, through his actions, through his example more so than through anything he may or may not say in a dressing room.

“I’m lucky enough in that I’ve got the likes of Tom Murnane there,” he says. “I’ve got Tweaky [John Griffin], Darren Dineen, Patrick Kelly, they’re all leaders or figureheads. They love talking... they love the sound of their own voice some of em’!”

So much for respecting your elders! All jokes aside, this does seem to be a Kerry panel of rare unity of purpose and camaraderie. They’ll need that and more as over the coming weeks and months they’re tested to a far greater extent than they ever have been before.
Games against Limerick and Clare are in no where comparable with games against Derry and Down. Leinster championship hurling is no way comparable with that you’ll find in the Christy Ring Cup.

If he’s daunted, if his colleagues are daunted, then he and they are doing a good job of hiding it at the moment. The adjective that would most accurately describe how Collins is feeling right now would have to be pumped.
“We have a talented bunch,” he maintains.
“We have some players there after coming out of retirement and have a lot of good young fellas in. We’ve so much potential it’s just a matter of fulfilling it. We’re training five / six nights a week, fellas are committed.

“I suppose you can’t really fault anybody, nobody misses training, there’s no messing about any more, the social life... we don’t have a social life any more... it’s gone! We’re focused we’re going to have one big crack at it and we’ll see where it takes us.
“Realistically we want stay in Division 1B there’s no two ways about it.”
There’s no shortage of ambition and confidence from Collins and Kerry. He’s stepped up to the plate before, he can do so again. Kerry will need him to.

Many of you recall giving us a major scare in Tralee in 2003? I think you were 5 or 6 points up at one stage during the second half, cracking atmosphere that day, we pulled away in the last ten minutes but the Kerry team that day certainly made Limerick earn it.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, I'll gladly take any excuse to head to Killarney but I'm really interested in observing this Kerry team, haven't seen much of them other than highlights (usually VERY brief) on tv and the Derry game last year. After hammering a pretty awful Wexford team last weekend I hope for a competitive game this weekend, here's hoping for a good game.

I remember that game,we had been beaten by Waterford in Munster Championship and the got a run going in the qualifiers beat Derry,Carlow and Westmeath,

We gave ye a good game that evening in Tralee,Liam Boyle scored 4 points off Mark Foley and Shane Brick scored a screamer of a goal, our lads raised their game in a big way,

I would be happy if the lads were competitive tomorrow and give ye a good game of it.

Lost by four in the finish, after being eleven behind at the break. Probably a case of Limerick emptying the bench, but at least a respectable scoreline at the end.

Excellent display in the second half.

Wouldn't use Limericks emptying the bench had anything to do with it as Kerry made changes too and making subs at this time of the year happens in every game.

Limericks also had some strong changes to make. Overall, excellent start to the campaign and if they maintain this level, they can certainly win a few more points.

Great. I'm off that weekend too. Never been to a hurling game so hope to make it. I live a 5 minute walk from Fitz stadium but had my own game on Sunday so had to miss the hurling.

the pitch has been done and the lights, any other changes to the Park?

New spectator rail replaces the fence around the pitch now and the dug outs have been upgraded as well, hey are at more of an angle so it should be easier for subs and the backroom team to see the game, and they have work done at the Mitchel's end as well,

I think they have done a bit of work to the dressing rooms but not sure,

One thing that badly needed though is to give the place a lick of paint it was getting a bit a rough there the last few years

    looks good alright -

    phase 1 pitch

    phase 2 -

The second phase of development involves the following…

    • The levelling and concreting of the John Mitchels end terracing
    • Installation of a new modern floodlighting system
    • Removal of the wire perimeter fencing to be replaced with a spectator friendly low wall topped by metal horizontal bars
    • The perimeter wall will have safety gates to allow pitch access for spectators in the event of emergency
    • Upgrading of the team dugouts to include elevated seating

Vital points at stake as Kerry footballers travel to Newry on Sunday

With two pointless games behind them, Kerry’s trip north to take on Down in the Allianz Football League Round 3 on Sunday next is certainly one that they will have to bring away something from. Before the League commenced, given the fact that so many of the panel were absent due to injury or other commitments, along with the fact that Kerry were going into the All Ireland title holder’s back yard in Round 1, very few would have put Kerry down for four points at this stage of the competition in the first place, but they certainly would have said that Kerry would have two points in the bag from the Round 2 encounter with Roscommon. We all know what happened on that occasion, and Kerry are now in a situation where they have to win on Sunday to keep their hopes of a semi final place alive not to mention the very important issue of avoiding relegation from the premier division. Their opponents Down, are in exactly the same position having shipped a 17 points defeat at the hands of Donegal on home soil while also losing out to Monaghan albeit after a much improved performance in Round 2.

    Player Availability Update

Kerry’s Under 21 players, Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Tom O’Sullivan and Barry O’Sullivan, having helped the seniors out in a time of need, return to training with Jack O’Connor’s crew for the remainder of Kerry’s involvement in that championship but on the flip side of that coin some well know faces are back in the reckoning for a starting place on Sunday. Eamonn Fitzmaurice has confirmed that the likes of Marc Ó Sé, Kieran Donaghy, Colm Cooper, Bryan Sheehan, Peter Crowley and Kieran O’Leary will all be vying for a place on Sunday. He also confirmed that Aidan Walsh and Denis Daly (St Marys) and Tadhg Morley and Gavin Crowley (Templenoe) are in training with the Kerry squad right now following their exertions with their respective clubs in the All Ireland Club Championship campaign. Meanwhile the Geaneys, Paul and Mikey, Anthony Maher and James O’Donoghue are all still recovering from Autumn surgery.

Right now, as we witnessed when they went 29 scoreless second half minutes against Roscommon, Kerry are badly in need of a creative player such as Colm Cooper up front and with a cock a hoop Donegal just around the corner Kerry need to get back on track on Sunday next in Páirc Esler. The game has a 2pm throw-in time with Martin Duffy in charge of the whistle.

Kerry’s remaining games in the League are at home to Donegal in Austin Stack Park on March 6th (Double bill with the Kerry V Wexford Hurling game), away to Mayo on March 13th and after a two week break, away to Monaghan on March 27th and finishing with a home game against Cork in Austin Stack Park on April 3rd.

Gooch is releasing a book at the end of the year

The team, captained by Bryan Sheehan is as follows:
    1. Brendan Kealy Kilcummin
    2. Marc Ó Sé An Ghaeltacht
    3. Mark Griffin St Michaels/Foilmore
    4. Shane Enright Tarbert
    5. Padraig O’Connor Killarney Legion
    6. Aidan O’Mahony Rathmore
    7. Fionn Fitzgerald Dr Crokes
    8. David Moran Kerins O’Rahillys
    9. Bryan Sheehan (C) St Marys
    10. Aidan Walsh St Marys
    11. Paul Murphy Rathmore
    12. Donnchadh Walsh Cromane
    13. Darran O’Sullivan Glenbeigh-Glencar
    14. Alan Fitzgerald Castlegregory
    15. Stephen O’Brien Kenmare
    Fir Ionaid:
    16. Brian Kelly Killarney Legion
    17. Tommy Walsh Kerins O’Rahillys
    18. Barry John Keane Kerins O’Rahillys
    19. Colm Cooper Dr Crokes
    20. Kieran Donaghy Austin Stacks
    21. Brendan O’Sullivan Valentia
    22. Pa Kilkenny Glenbeigh/Glencar
    23. Paul O’Sullivan Valentia
    24. Peter Crowley Laune Rangers
    25. Philip O’Connor Cordal
    26. Denis Daly St Marys
    Bainisteóir: Eamonn Fitzmaurice (Finuge)
Róghnóirí: Diarmuid Murphy (Dingle), Mikey Sheehy (Austin Stacks), Padraig Corcoran (Dingle), Liam Hassett (Laune Rangers).

Very interesting selection. Looks like we are going all in on the defensive side of things, with Paul Murphy @11 as a sweeper.

Alan Fitz had a shocking few minutes against Roscommon, hopefully steps it up now that he gets the starting berth.

Aidan Walsh debut is good. Athletic sort, should do a lot of running.

Good mix of experience and youth, and certainly a new defensive approach.

    Looking forward to seeing it.

Also, Gooch and Donaghy on the way back, delighted. Marc and Sheehan slot straight back in and Padraig O'Connor gets a chance at wing back. He impressed for Legion and in the McGrath cup by all accounts so hopefully gets on well.

I dunno I was at a Rathmore game at the end of last year and Paul Murphy played centre forward for the whole game.

    Interesting experiment,
