dont think this is the right place to discuss incidents that may or may not have happened on what is supposed to be a private trip.

some have heard it was a nothing incident, others have said its more..ill put it to you this way, incidents like this, if it even happened are fare more likely to be blown out of proportion than be played down.

i asked somebody with a close contact to the panel today and he had heard nothing about it so i doubt its much at all.

i hope we put out 7 or 8 of the last 3 minor teams and bed them in quickly. the mcgrath cup has been used in the past to put out lads who have no hope of making the panel, that needs to change and then hit the ground running in the league.

their lack of inclusion over the last few years has been bizzare and its not worked IMO.

cant see any reason why they cant play a couple of games each, regardless of what is happening at u-21 level.

Most of those lads are still only 19-20 at this stage. It would have been much too early for them in recent seasons surely? Although Begley did well this year when he came in to be fair.

Most players wouldn't be ready for senior until their early 20's though. Morley is a good example this season, and Murphy who broke through in 2014 at age 22-23. If we had put out a bunch of teenagers against Dublin in recent years they'd have been eaten alive. I think we need to temper expectations of these young players a bit.

I'd still be reasonably hopeful for 2017. This year was a bad one with long injuries to important players like JOD, Maher and Buckley. If we can get everybody fit and healthy and integrate a couple of U-21s we have a panel as good as anybody outside Dublin.

First game of the year on Sunday against Tipp, was reading there that Eamonn Fitzmaurice said its going to be the u21 team on duty for it,should be interesting game to start off the year

Hurlers also start the year against Cork in Mallow, gave them a good game last year in this competition and I think it was the biggest reason why we hit the ground running in 1B last year we had good games in the Munster League

Fintan O'Connor has been named as the new hurling manager, apparently he's from Tipp, and was one of Derek McGrath's Waterford selectors.

He's not from Tipp, lives there alright, Kildare man originally I believe.

Thought it was a great interview,he comes across as a very modest man who enjoyed playing gaelic FOOTBALL :D but had more important priorities in life.

He came across as very straight and direct. He took the questioning by the OTB lads very literally.

I didn't realise Ciaran Carey left because some of the players weren't happy with him, it seems the players no matter what county it is now blame the manager for their their own lack of success

New manager for the Kerry Ladies

STEPHEN Wallace is set to return to inter-county management tonight.

The Ardfert man is set to be named the new Kerry Senior Ladies football manager tonight at their annual convention.

He has enjoyed great success with the Kerry juniors winning back to back All Ireland Junior Football titles, before vacating the role to take over as IT Tralee senior team manager in September.

It’s expected Wallace, who takes over from Alan O’Neill, will take the ladies team job for at least a two year period.

Dont know what has happened here but

Graham Shine Is The New Kerry Ladies Senior Manager

Graham Shine is the new Kerry Senior ladies manager. The Listowel Emmets clubman went through an interview process last Tuesday evening and was recommended as the best candidate for the position. Shine was ratified at last night’s county board meeting in Connolly Park and his two year appointment was met with universal approval from the delegates present.

Shine has previously managed the Kerry U/16 ladies in 2015 and 2016 with success winning Munster and All Ireland titles in both years with these teams. He also coached the Listowel Emmets and Rathkeale men’s teams in 2016 and he was also the physical trainer with Feale Rangers County Championship team.

A qualified personal trainer and fitness instructor, Shine will be naming his backroom team over the next few days. He has just over 3 weeks to prepare his team for their first round Lidl National Football league Division 1 away fixture against reigning league and All Ireland champions Cork.

Jonathon Griffin of Glenbeigh was also ratified for a 2 year term as the new ladies minor county manager. Griffin, a former Glenbeigh/Glencar footballer and well known referee in the county, will have a number of the successful U/16 girls available to him as Kerry strive to win an All Ireland minor title for the first time since 1995.

Tipperary cleaned out by Kerry U21s

Kerry 3-11 Tipperary 1-3: Liam Kearns was somewhat apprehensive making the trip home to Tralee. He knew the Kerry U21s had a fair amount of work done in preparation for their upcoming Munster championship campaign. He also knew how little work his own squad had done.

The end result was a 14-point trouncing where the visitors managed only one score in the second-half, that a 49th minute point from sub Jack Kennedy. Seven of the side which featured during last August’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Mayo were on show here and while Kearns was cognisant of their limited preparation heading into this McGrath Cup opener, no manager enjoys a 14 scores to four thumping.

“The boys gave me a rod to use on their backs and I will be using it,” he said. “You can’t hide away from it. That was a trouncing out there. We got our backsides spanked by an U21 team so perspective is perspective.”

He added: “They cleaned us out at midfield under our own kick-outs. We would pride ourselves on winning our own kick-outs, but we didn’t have any work done on it. You could see their kick-outs were well rehearsed. They’re clearly well-drilled.”

Tipperary had taken the lead when corner-forward Diarmuid Foley collected a Philip Austin through ball 10 minutes in and drilled a low effort beyond Kerry ‘keeper Shane Ryan. The Kerry U21’s, though, were noticeably sharper and replied with three on the bounce from Conor Geaney (free), Barry O’Sullivan and impressive corner-back Tom O’Sullivan to hit the front. Centre-forward Sean O’Shea was another to frustrate a sluggish looking Tipperary defence.

Kevin Fahey levelled matters at 1-1 to 0-4, but the Kingdom assumed control thereafter and hit a further 1-4 uninterrupted. Matthew O’Sullivan was responsible for their opening goal, the towering full-forward drawing the foul from Paddy Codd as Daniel O’Brien’s delivery floated into the Tipperary square. Referee Conor Lane spread his arms wide, with Cathal Bambury dispatching the penalty beyond Evan Comerford.

O’Sullivan turned provider for their two second-half majors, palming the ball on the first instance and then punching Ivan Parker’s delivery to the net two minutes from time.

Kerry boss Jack O’Connor was impressed with O’Sullivan, their overall performance and the manner in which his young charges matched their opponents in the physical stakes.

“We were just hoping to give a good account of ourselves as you just never know at this level. There is a big difference in physique and physical conditioning. We have a good bit of work done in the gym and I thought our lads stood up well.

“Rather than breaking up the U21’s and have a few of them playing with the seniors for this fixture, it was better to get them together and get value out of the game as an U21 team. It certainly suited us to stay together as we’re looking to build towards the Munster championship.”

On Matthew O’Sullivan’s contribution, he commented: “He’s big and he’s very enthusiastic. He has really improved in the last few months. We just think the modern day lends itself to, maybe, having a big man there and with the new square ball rule where you can get in once the ball is kicked. It worked today. It mightn’t work another day.”

    Scorers for Kerry: M O’Sullivan (2-0); C Bambury (1-1, 1-0 pen); S O’Shea (0-3, 0-1 free 0-1 ’45); C Geaney (0-1 free), T O’Sullivan (0-2 each); B O’Sullivan, M Flaherty, C Coffey (0-1 each).

    Cork response pleases Kieran Kingston

Cork 1-28 Kerry 0-18: Kieran Kingston was pleased with the second-half response as Cork had 13 points to spare on Kerry in the opening round of the Co-op Superstores Munster SHL at Mallow yesterday.

Having been 1-12 to 0-14 in front at half-time, the Rebels actually fell behind as Kerry’s main scoring threat, Shane Nolan, got two quick points on the resumption.

The Kingdom would only add two more to that tally, however, as the manager’s son Shane Kingston (two) and Mark Coleman produced an immediate Cork response.

From there, they pushed on, with Shane Kingston finishing with nine points while sub Luke Meade also made his presence felt.

For Kieran Kingston, the win was welcome, but there was an acknowledgement that parts of the performance weren’t up to scratch.

“There were aspects that we were very pleased with, but aspects that we were definitely not pleased with,” he said.

“We’ve an awful lot of work to do. We weren’t happy with what we did in the first half, okay there was a bit of a breeze there, but we got a lot right in the second half and we ran out convincing winners, which is what you’d expect.

“We conceded 10 frees to three in the first half, you can be dubious about some of them but that’s the way it was. Secondly, the use of the ball, taking shots from 80 yards, we had to cut that out and we spoke about it half-time.”

Darragh Fitzgibbon had the early goal as Cork moved 1-5 to 0-4 ahead, but their largest first-half lead was five points and Nolan, Micheál O’Leary and early sub Jordan Conway all impressed in attack as Kerry whittled down the lead.

In the second half, Kingston came to the fore after moving to centre-forward following Séamus Harnedy’s half-time retirement with a shoulder injury which could keep him out for a few weeks.

Michael Cahalane finished with four points and could have had a goal but for a good Aidan McCabe save, and Kingston is looking forward to seeing the newer members of the panel develop.

“The young lads were very good,” he said, “they worked hard and gave us great pace and movement.

“The lads we brought in as subs were excellent too, they gave a great balance to the team, that’s what we’ve been talking about and trying to do but, look, you’ve got to be realistic, it’s January and it’ll take these lads a while to grow into inter-county hurlers.

“We have to be patient with them and give them a chance to come through over the next while.”

Limerick await in the Gaelic Ground next week, though Harnedy will miss that game while corner-back Killian Burke is also set for a spell out after he suffered a suspected broken thumb in the first half.

“We have a few injuries,” Kingston said.

“Anthony Nash was supposed to start but he hurt his back in the warm-up, he should be back next week though. Paul Haughney is out for about six to eight weeks, Séamus took a knock to his AC joint and we have Luke O’Farrell and Mark Ellis coming back too.”

    Scorers for Cork:

    S Kingston (0-9, 3 frees), D Fitzgibbon (1-2), M Cahalane (0-4), S Harnedy (0-2, frees), L Meade, M Coleman (3 frees) (0-3 each), B Cooper (0-2), L McLoughlin, B Lawton (0-1 each).

    Scorers for Kerry:

    S Nolan (0-9, 7 frees), J Conway (0-3), M O’Leary, P O’Connor (0-2 each), M Boyle, J Egan (0-1 each).

    CORK:

    P Collins; D Griffin, S McDonnell, K Burke; D Cahalane, C Joyce, M Coleman; L McLoughlin, B Lawton; S O’Keeffe, S Harnedy, S Kingston; M Cahalane, B Cooper, D Fitzgibbon.

    Subs:

    S O’Donoghue for Burke (12, injured), L Meade for Harnedy (half-time, injured), A Cadogan for O’Keeffe (58), C Murphy for D Cahalane, C O’Leary for McLoughlin (both 61).

    KERRY:

    A McCabe; S Weir, R Horgan, B Lyons; J O’Connor, D Dineen, T O’Connor; D Collins, P O’Connor; M O’Leary, M Boyle, B O’Leary; J Goulding, S Nolan, J Egan.

    Subs:

    J Conway for B O’Leary (6, injured), T Casey for Goulding (42), P Boyle for M O’Leary, P Lucid for Egan (both 53), J Godley for O’Connor (58).

    Referee:

    T Walsh (Waterford).

seemed to be a decent start for the u-21s. hopefully they will do well this year, though a trip to PUR for a potential final is a huge challenge.

Looks like a decent side early in the year.

Morley in Midfield should be good. Plays there more often than not with Templenoe.

Delighted to see my clubman Jack Barry make the bench with his brother Andrew having starred last weekend. (He was named in the Hoganstand Team of the Week at Centreback).

A very strong Kerry team for this time of the year. Is Fitzmaurice hoping to turn over the Dublin voodoo early? I think that's the intenT!

Nah I think it shows the willingness of some of the top players to get down and dirty for thr cause.

The likes of James, David Moran and Donnacha Walsh could easily be content with waiting for the league to begin before togging out, but they eveidently want to get back in the green and gold jersey ASAP.
Little thoughts of Dublin yet IMO.

Its all good and well that the established guys might be raring to get back into the jersey but that does not necessarily mean they have to be selected.

What exactly is the upside of playing guys like Young, Moran, Crowley, Lyne and Walsh right now ?

JOD and Michael Ganey had injuries last year so there is some merit to giving them game time.

A bunch of young lads put Tipp to the sword last week and they get no opportunity to build on it.

Or is it that there is no one Kerry good enough to really challenge the veterans mentioned for their places so there is no value in playing them at all.

Or is it that there is no one Kerry good enough to really challenge the veterans mentioned for their places so there is no value in playing them at all.

We played a full team of u21 players last weekend and hockied a Tipperary team with 7 players that lost the All Ireland Semi Final last year.

It's fairly clear that the talent is coming through. The key is to introduce them slowly into the Senior setup- like O'Beaglaoich last year and Tom O'Sullivan and Jason Foley this year.

Playing lads (4 of whom are coming back from injury JOD, M.Geaney, Moran and Crowley) who have established themselves on the panel is hardly admitting defeat in terms of bringing youth through. These lads need the run out more than others perhaps. Or Fitzmaurice is trying a few players in different positions with an eye to the Championship.

The only two you could give out about would be Donnacha Walsh and Killian Young. The others lacked gametime last year, are being played out of their normal position or have a point to prove.

The likes of Lyne and Geaney didn't play at all last year and are being given a full run out.

Griffin is still inexperienced at Full Back and a test agaisnt Peter Kelleher will stand to him.

Crowley will likely have to hold the middle at CHB instead of moving onto the wing.

James needs more football before the league, cinsidering the playing time missed last year with his shoulders.

BJK is given a chance to prove himself, beside his clubmate Savage.

You could play your u21's all the time of course and that would be great experience, but i'd hardly look at lads wanting to tog out for Kerry a few weeks before the league as a negative. Especially considering how we started the league last year- being embarassed in Croke Park and then losing to Roscommon!

No harm for the lads to be a bit sharper earlier.

Look at the Cork side named as well. Strong side with 10+ familiar faces.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,451 ✭✭✭wonga77

Not that it makes a single sign of difference but why is Crowley captain? I thought Morley would have it in the absence of Crokes players.
Its unusual to see such a strong team out this early really, Where has Alan Fitzgerald disappeared to?

Really hope Brendan O Sullivan stays injury free this year,he was very impressive last season.

Would have liked to see Adrian Spillane at half forward, probably for Walsh. Nice looking team all the same.

I'm optimistic about 2017 for the first time in a long time (including 2014 when we won it). Great to see new faces and know there is quality breaking through.
