Kerry and Cork clash in Munster Under 21 Final

Kerry travel to Páirc Uí Rinn on this Wednesday night for a much anticipated meeting with Cork in the Eirgrid Munster Under 21 championship final, a game that has a 7:30 throw-in time. Kerry folk need little reminding that the Kingdom have not beaten Cork in this grade since Killian Young’s side of 2008 worked the oracle in Austin Stack Park back in 2008 with a team that included the likes of Shane Enright, David Moran, Kieran O’Leary, Johnny Buckley and Tommy Walsh. That team went on to claim Kerry’s last All Ireland in the grade but since then Kerry have had to suffer a raft of disappointing defeats at the hands of the Rebels including four in the first round, one at the semi final stage and three finals.

What is surprising is that Cork have gone on to win just two All Ireland titles in the grade in those years though it must be conceded that they were particularly unlucky in a couple of finals when lady luck did not smile on them. Kerry, under Jack O’Connor, have been busy building on the success of their minors over the past three or four years and they were unlucky with injuries last year, but on this occasion they are picking from a full squad although it has been a struggle to get the full panel together with Sigerson and All Ireland Club activity ongoing right up to the St Patrick’s weekend.

It has been all of twenty years since Kerry have won on Cork soil at this level and that replayed final in Páirc Uí Rinn will be remembered for the last minute penalty save by David Moloney of Dr Crokes from Fionán Murray. That Kerry side included the likes of Barry O’Shea, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Tomás Ó Sé, Denis Dwyer, and Mike Frank Russell.

The Kerry team to do duty on Wednesday contains eight of the side that started in last year’s final against the same opposition while four more starters were on the injured list for last year’s decider.

Cork are an experienced side, have matched Kerry at minor level in 2014 and 2015 and will as usual be a difficult nut to crack. Kerry, with a squad who are accustomed to a winning mentality, will be attempting to finally end the hoodoo that has hung over them in the Under 21 grade in recent times and only an Herculean performance will see them through on this occasion. Referee is Alan Kissane of Waterford.

Hard to believe that, hopefully that record will go out the window tonight

Really poor stuff here with the conditions.

Kerry should be out the gate.

    1-6 to 0-3.

We are the better team, just need to put the scores on the board early in the second half

Miles better than Cork, starting to pull away now

Have the Cork lads plugged the plug on the stream?

Does the referee understand the black card rule?

    Neither black cards for me.

Two high tackles. Neither come under the 5 types of tackles that come with a black card sanction.

Now thats a black card from Begley!

    Congrats to the lads.

    Comprehensive victory.

Never let up. Got cynical in the end which is unfortunate or good practice whichever way you want to look at it.

Brian O'Braglaoich looked a step above everyone out there IMO. Foley looked accomplished as well. Sean O'Shea will be a star and Matthew O'Flaherty is a might size of a man with a great eye for goal.

    Things are looking up.

Andrew Barry named Man of the Match.

    Delighted for him.

I'd have picked O'Beaglaoich myself but Barry was mighty in the middle. His passing was a bit off in the first half but great that he has plenty to improve.

Jack and Andrew Midfield combo for Kerry in the future?

Disappointing from Cork, they just died a death after the first goal and its was game over very early in the second half

The one thing I will say about our lads is that when they are given the time and space they are good to watch, still think they can up it level or two in,hopefully Jack will get it out of them before the season is over

Roll on the Semi against the Connacht champions

Already a shock there, with Mayo losing their crown - we're rightfully favourites, but Jack will keep them grounded.

No shock really as Galway were favourites in Connacht this year despite Mayo having 6 of last years winning side back.

Yeah a couple of strong Minor teams have fed into that Galway side. They look a real danger.

That Dublin side will be very powerful up front as well.

Hopefully the lads deal with the monumental pressure and can deliver another All Ireland.

excellent performance and finally great to get the PUR monkey and indeed, the u-21 monkey, off our backs.

could be a hugely important day in the rebuild over the next year or two.

Very poor showing from Cork, despite having 9 of last years panel, that's not a strong team they have. They've one or two handy forwards, but they need to be fed and Kerry absolutely cleaned them out around the middle 8. They were much sharper on the breaks, that half back line is ridiculously strong & Kerrys kickouts were on the button 90% of the time.

On top of that, Kerry had a much stronger bench to look to - O'Sullivan & Burns on with 15 to go, along with Cormac Coffey & Jordan Kiely - Cork couldn't match that. There's also a serious confidence & calmness about this batch of players coming through, success breeds success & they're used to winning at this point. Few fúck ups at the back had the scoreline back at 4-3, Cork could very well have come back into it, but there was no panic, they continued to play their game and took control again before half time, Cork were chasing this game for its entirety.

Was most impressed with the usual suspects - Begley, Foley, O'Sullivan, Spillane, Sean O'Shea & again, Shane Ryans kickouts deserve mention

surely, if he wants it, Jack deserves the senior team if he delivers a 21 all ireland this year?

fitzmaurice has regressed as a manager in recent years in my opinion.

Would kinda agree, but to be fair Fitzmaurice has a poor squad to work with in comparison to managers that came before him. Added to that our best player (arguably) JOD has been injured for two years.

We are playing dire stuff at the moment though, no doubt about it. We give away frees for fun and have no coherent plan up front. We have been all over the shop at times in the league.

Would be nice to see a couple of the U21's in the starting lineup this year. Foley & O'Beaglaoich must be in with a shout at the very least. Sean O'Shea also appears to be more reliable on frees than anybody in the senior setup bar Sheehan, who won't start in the championship. May be too early for him this year though.

One thing I'd love to see is the stats on the players who are conceding the frees - there are some lads who seem to be persistent offenders, especially in terms of cheap frees (giving away frees in front of the posts with half-hearted lazy tackling even when opposition players are bottled up with one or even 2 other Kerry players in close attendance) while for some of the other lads seem a lot better in terms of the conceding of frees, but I'd love to see the stats to back it up.

O'Beaglaoich started all 4 championship games last year so he's surely in with a serious shout.

I could definitely see Foley having a major shot of a starting place - he just looks it have "it"

In terms of O'Shea he might be a bit young yet but for me it makes far more sense long-term to have him sitting on the bench as opposed to Sheehan.
The last time Sheehan played a full championship game for Kerry was in the first round against Clare in 2014. Makes far more sense to have O'Shea on the bench as opposed to Sheehan if Sheehan is only going to be a 20/15 minutes spell option especially given Sheehan's form has looked decidedly poor for a long time now at intercounty and how O'Shea seems to be in flying form and looks to be a nailed-on prospect for the future.

The squad for the Clare/Limerick game is likely to be very interesting in terms of how many of the youngsters are involved. The final of the U21 is the 29th of April (if Kerry win the semi on April 15th ) and the Munster semi-final against Limerick or Clare isn't until the 11th of June. There was a fair number of guys on the U21 squad who were called in to training at some stage last year so it will be interesting to see how ruthless Fitzmaurice is.

Never been a fan of Marty Duffy, always strikes me as a very niggly, fussy ref, so we'll need to be especially careful on the free count!

Not sure about that forward line. Perhaps Fitzy isn't keen on making the League Final.

A good oportunity to test Jack Savage against a tough defensive system missed.

The pace of Jack Barry will be missed also.

On the other hand we've faded late in games. Perhaps having Savage, Barry, Enright and Spillane coming off the bench gives us an energy and pace boost that will help us close out the game.

Yeah, they can in theory, but its unlikely. They need several other games to go their way and improbably big scores to be racked up in them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,365 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

I'd hardly call Dublin beating Monahan and Kerry having a 6 point swing on Donegal improbably big scores.

I think we could beat Tyrone by 3 and Mayo beat Donegal by 3, that might do it.

That would put us level on points difference. Not sure if points scored or head to head would be the tiebreaker in this case.

Edit: as far as I can tell it goes to Points scored next and it seems that we are 8 points behind in points scored, so we'd need a high scoring shootout against Tyrone, which is very unlikely. So its a 7 point differential that we need to overturn.
