Lads isn't it a pity that Killarney doesn't get of the Munster hurling championship games, great venue that only gets filled to capacity once every two years, like yesterdays game between Cork and Clare could have been played there.

Hardly equal distance between Cork and Clare though, with Clare having to travel through Limerick. Grounds all over the country are under used. Pairc Ui Chaoimh will have no game this year yet the Gaelic Grounds will have 3 hurling and 1 football. Luck of the draw and Home/Away arrangements mean its a lottery from year to year

Big call alright but could do him the world of good. Terrific option to bring off the bench too.

Will Declan O'Sullivan actually play in at number 14? Always felt he was one of the best number 11's I have seen play. For me, it would be a waste to play him at 14.

He did alright full forward in the 2009 All Ireland quarter final - or have you erased that game from your memory InchicoreDude;);) Also played there in the 2009 final and destroyed Cork in the first half.

Aah ok, sorry my use of words werent great.

I believe he is a better number 11 than 14. Also think Cooper would be better close in to goal than at number 11.

I havent seen Kerry this year in championship though (not even on TV) so dont know much about them. Will the forwards selected play in those positions?

Some serious pace in that full forward line, Tis all bout getting the right ball in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,385 ✭✭✭✭D'Agger

Pacy full forward line alright - wonder will Kerry go for something along the lines of pulling Declan back around midfield and allow him to run at the defence - he'd be a great man to be given a free reign to roam around the field, pick and carry job - that leaves room for a very pacy full forward line inside.

All that said - I don't think Fitzmaurice will go for that and will leave Declan inside to cause problems, also a very good man to take a score lets not forget

I don't think he's been up to much the last couple of years tbh.

Nevermind O'Driscoll, the big talking point today is the dropping of Kieran Donaghy!

Donaghys form hasnt been brilliant for a good while now so maybe not a massive surprise. Also I suspect the cute hoors are at it again and this is an attempt to wind Donaghy up and get him ready for the knockout stages of the championship. When it comes to the qualifiers/quarter final Donaghy will be in the team

Lads it is highly likely that the team is a dummie team. It's Fitzmaurice's first game and he may want to keep the rebel boys guessing. Mark Griffen hasn't even come off the bench in any of the championship games this year(as far as I remember). Word is down here that Mark O Se will start at full back, Shane Enright at corner and Fionn Fitzgerald in the other corner.
Gooch is our best point getter, and will not stay at centre forward the whole game, there will be a rotation between him declan and darran going in and out of the full forward line. As for the man some call "Star", I would not be shocked to see him walking behind the marching band at 5 to 2 on Sunday either.

    All shall soon be revealed...

It's 100% not a dummy team unless someone gets a knock between here and there.

Not sure about the dummy team theory but the 'forced' selection of Griffin at full back is interesting.
He came in for and injured O Mahoney late in the league and did well apparently, but was then dropped for a recovered O' Mahoney for the Tipp and Waterford games.
At the time I suggested here that it would have been better for him to start against the weaker teams to get some championship game time.
But now Fitzmaurice is forced to pick him in a far bigger and far more important game as AOM is injured again

big call starting Griffin, but even more baffling that he wasnt brought on in the first two games if they trust him that much..

wonder is it safe to say that the reason he is playing, is that he has been playing out of his skin in training on Donaghy, hence Donaghy being dropped?

He was very good in the league to be fair. That said, O'Mahony had a great year last year and is probably justifiably first choice. Definitely right that Griffin should have gotten runs in the first two games though.

O'Mahony dislocated his elbow last week, that's why he's starting.

What odds on Donaghy coming off the bench to win the game for Kerry?

  • Registered Users Posts: 818 ✭✭✭Archer3083

Kerry have a lot of aging players who lack pace. I do think that Kerry are still a good team. I think they're definitely a top 4 or 5 team and the Munster final will be close but Kerry won't win the All Ireland this year. They haven't added any new players. Mark Griffin is only in for injured O'Mahony. It's the same team and you can't expect different results doing the same thing

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭68Murph68

Griffin came on for Marc in the Tipp game. He got 10 minutes.

The notion of people thinking it is a dummy team amuses me greatly.

With the Cork full back line likely to be Cadogan, Shields and Cahalane, playing three fairly fast forwards {Darren, James and Declan}, all well capable of roaming out the field clearly looks like a strategy to cause the Cork defence problems.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Cooper popping up closer to goal on occasion on Sunday too.

Donaghy being dropped is no great surprise, he's looked lost more times than not in the last few years.

Only real problem dropping him presents is not having the option of hauling him into the middle third if things start malfunctioning. I suppose Firzmaurice can bring him on to do that job if he wants anyways.

Very true. I can see this happening. The problem for Fitzmaurice is if the Cork defence get on top, he won't have the option of putting in the high ball around the square either. Donaghy can be effective there even when he isn't scoring.

"Mickey Ned O'Sullivan may feel the wrath of the 'Animalistic' Kerry supporters" ???

I'm not sure there is anyone in the county that expects us to win this game? They will be in a quarter final regardless, so unless we get beaten by a lesser team in the Quarter Finals I can't see MNOS being ravaged any time soon.

Also tbh, the result of the Minor game will be irrelevant by 2.00pm.

A bit of hyperbole from a Tipp man there alright I think!

Would be pretty cheesed off if it wasn't a close game at the least though. This Tipp side are no great shakes, playing at home in front of what should be a big crowd. TBH I'd probably be questioning him a bit if we get blown out.

Which a writer is totally entitled to do. :P

Good insight into the confidence that Tipperary have garnered at underage level.

I know the term "great for football" is trotted out quite a bit in relation to the non-traditional footballing counties, but it really applies here IMO. The more counties that emerge at underage level the better.

Yeah Munster could do with a strong third team really, really badly. The big question in GAA is and seems to have always been how to convert great minor and U21 teams into senior progress. Remains to be seen if they can manage that, but fingers crossed.
