My father often talks about the snow of 1947, so much snow you would only know where the ditches were by the trees that were sticking out.....
Apparently it stayed on the hills and in Kilkenny city it was gone and the people use to say 'you still got the snow up there' and the reply would be 'yeah, but ye will get it all in water yet', and they did, there was big flooding in Kilkenny city from the melting snow from the hills around.....

I think we can do without that kind of snow...

Whats the chances of an event like that happeneng????

    BH

'47 and '62 events were caused by a 'Bartlett High' apparently (see http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/117), we don't have this at the moment but there is a high supposed to be building over Greenland over the next while which could channel very cold air down from the Artic over NW Europe.

Also, the unprecedented 'stratospheric warming' seen recently has a delayed effect on the actual weather which won't be seen for another week or two so there could be a LOT more cold weather to come. I'm no expert but all the 'people-in-the-know' are very excited about this phenomenon ;).

My folks still talk about 1947, 6 weeks of solid snowdrifts, I doubt if it will happen again but it's like Mother Nature is just reminding us there's more to climate/weather than global warming.

Thats because the precip is light.
It's going to be alternating quite a bit as the dewpoints are marginal.
I still think increasingly to snow though and the airport at 3pm reported snow.

Not down my way though-opposite happening so increasingly rain I think.

I'm bricking it over Sundays system, my flight to China is on Monday morning....

For once I'm genuinely hoping its rain all the way.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

    Supercell.
Bewleys Dublin airport hotel is currently €50 per night.

I SERIOUSLY suggest you stay up there the night before.
It will be the best €50 you will spend.

There's a low north of Scotland that looks interesting. Could this be a polar low, and where might it be heading?

Aha! No wonder you've been biased for the past few days!

I don't think he's worried about the traffic, I think it's more that Dublin Airport might be closed on Monday.

I doubt it will be, we've seen the last of the snow this year IMO.

No it's not a "polar low" it's just one of the lows dragging down this modified polar air we have.

It's on the fax charts and will not head down into Ireland -it is driving our current precip though.
Eventually it will bring our precip away eastwards.

Has been snowing fairly consistantly since about 11:30am this morning in Swords. Look fabulous out there but I want to know if anyone has any idea how long it is going to last. My daughter is due to fly out on her first school trip tomorrow morning. Dublin airport currently closed. Is there any chance of it happening in the morning too. Please say no. She has been looking forward to this trip for months.

    Thanks
