Is a qualification for office tax dodging in America?

Two nominees by Obama to high office both withdrew their names on the same day (Tuesday, 3 February 2009) due to past tax dodges:
    • Tom Daschle, nominated for Secretary, Health & Human Services (acknowledged his late payment of more than $128,000 in income taxes)
    • Nancy Killefer, nominated for Chief Proformance Officer ($946.69 tax lien on her home for failure to pay unemployment compensation tax on household help)
Tim Geithner was confirmed as Treasury secretary despite belatedly paying $34,000 in income taxes. If it had not been discovered through the nomination investigation that he owed back taxes, would he have paid? If you believe this, I have a pig that flies to sell you, with or without lipstick.

This seems a bit odd for $947, although that it got to the stage of being a lien is perhaps more worrying.

Odd indeed! But maybe there was more to the story than reported? Who knows? Withdrawing her name stopped the nomination investigation. Smells fishy to me.

EDIT: Thursday, 5 February, Labor Secretary nominee Hilda Solis may not owe back taxes, but tax dodging seems to run in the family? Her husband "Sam Sayyad had just on Wednesday paid 6,400 dollars to settle unpaid taxes from as long ago 16 years ago for his Los Angeles-area auto repair business."
