How Do I Erase Firefox History

I just got Firefox, but I don't know how to delete the history, I thought I did it through the control panel but that didn't work. I've tried doing it through the 'history' tab within the browser but that doesn't seem to do anything. What am I supposed to do?

In the menu bar ...

Tools -> Clear Private Data + click what you want to erase or keep
