    Money is money.

The difference is that you are not an artist. You do not write songs and perform about the some issues you have had such as pressures induced through consumerism, then go on to sell a product you couldn't give a hoot about for a few extra bob. It's not as if they haven't enough money in the first place.

Those butter sales are up 85% too, since Rotten went rancid.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_celebrity_advertising
Historically, American actors and filmmakers Orson Welles, Francis Ford Coppola, and Audrey Hepburn would appear in Japanese advertisements, while eschewing American ones. More recent celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jodie Foster, who generally avoid publicity in the United States, have been known to do large-scale advertising campaigns in Japan and China.

It was nicely put in a song in 1980.;) A quote from Spirit Of Radio by Rush.

One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity

i dont think iggy pop is as minted as everyone thinks. he blew most of his money away on drugs etc. Sure his record sales and popularity hit a heavy slum in the 1980's only to be resurrected by that trainspotting film. i saw a documentary on him 2 years ago. nothing flashy about the lifestyle he lives in now.

Ay lay off him - they are just bloody songs man. anyone who takes their meaning etc seriously needs a kick in the head, jesus we all need money to eat.

i am sure though you will get over another disappointment like your hereo "selling out". live with it life can be full of disappointments. just enjoy his songs man

OP, The problem is, you put people on a pedestal and expect them to cling rigidly to the ideals they once had/you would like them to have.

I love lots of stuff famous people have done, but at the end of the day I really couldn't give a flying fook what they get up to.

If you think "selling out" diminishes what an artist creates, then you're not really seeing their art for what it is, but for what you perceive it to be.

Perfect point is*: Johnny Rotten was part of a manufactured band, as bone fide an artistic endeavour as westlife are. It was ALL fake, all the bile, anger, impudence, all of it. But now people think he's a sell-out for selling butter. please? (Sid Vicious was for real ... and showed the rest of them up for it)

But does God Save the Queen still rock? Yes, it does.

*It would have killed me to say all that when I was 19 BTW

Manic Street Preachers. Going on about their Socialist principles but one visit to their website will tell you that they would sell crack to a five year old.

Oh, and how much did Che Guevara make from all those badges/posters, eh?

How dare you say that about the man, the myth, the legend that is Bob Marley. He's a hero to stoners everywhere. Without him they wouldn't be able to talk about that time they had some Jamaican chronic.

I'd do it for nothing. I'm a whore though.

You can dress it up all you like selling out is selling out, whatever happened to artistic integrity?

Every single person everywhere in the world who ever picked up a guitar did so to sell their music, make lotsof money and have sex with lots of people with loose morals. Anyone who tells you differently is a liar.
