I am a new to this. Please be patient with me. I have been reading all the other posts but none that help answer r ease my concerns. So here goes nothing.

I am twenty two.I have got a level eight honours degree in business specialising in marketing. I am currently completing a post grad. in the area of marketing and will be finished in May. Lots of my mates are involved in construction related jobs and have booked flights and are ready to leave in the coming weeks. I can see their logic in going over there with their qualifications but i am unsure how i will fair with mine?

Any advice for me???I have one year work experience with an Irish company, working as a marketing assistant.

Do Australia employers just want construction related people cause thats all anyone ever talks about?

Are us business/marketing people wasting our time?

    Help Wanted!

People are ignoring you because you use text speak.

A short answer is, you are going to find it very difficult to find a job with only one years experience. Why not just come out on your WHV backpacking and do some fruit picking. At least that way you can apply for a second year WHV if you like it and be applying for business/marketing jobs at the same time?

Apologies for using text talk.I have tried to rectify it.Anyway, back to the thread.

I have heard about this fruit picking. What exactly does it involve. What working hours? In what location is it? Is it seasonal? What is the pay?

Right so you think I would be wasting my time looking for a business/marketing job?

Its not easy man. The fact is that the people who are going to be affected most by this recession are the under 25s. Youth unemployment is generally twice the headline number during a recession. If I were you I would think carefully before coming to Oz. To get started you will need enough money. HAve you got 5k? and are you willing to spend it without a guaranteed return for your investment. This recession is global and Australia is not immune- your mates in the construction trade are going to become all too aware of that once they arrive. If anything you are in a better position than them. If I were you I would do two things.

    1. Apply for each and every graduate recruitment scheme going in Ireland. See gradireland for details.
    2. Sign on and offer to volunter in a company where you think you can add to your cv.

Again, think carefully before blowing all your dosh coming here.

Thanks regulator for your honest opinion. Makes for depressing reading but I know your just being honest. So much for the myth that third level education makes you less likely to be unemployed.Hope there is no leaving Cert. students reading this.......:D

If you have administrative skills (typing, PC literate, organisational and social skills) and a good grasp of the English language, there are plenty of jobs in administration (eg. marketing assistant, corporate/commercial secretarial) that are available for people of this calibre. A year's work experience works well in your favour. I've watched people with virtually no working experience but with the right skills come out and land positions so you're ahead of the game there.

These jobs pay, on average, about $20-22 per hour (higher end jobs can call in up to $30ph) and with six month stints allowed on your WHV, a permanent or contract position is entirely possible although the temp world is your oyster.

Like everything, there are some employment agencies I wouldn't touch with a ten foot barge pole but there are agencies out there that are brilliant - I can recommend some in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide if you need.

In addition, the Irish business community in Australia can also give you a helping hand and, like life, on some occasions who you know can also help instead of what.

Good luck and don't listen to the naysayers.

Thanks for your feedback Tealeaf.Just curious are you based in australia at the moment?I would be delighted to earn 20-22 dollars per hour! You mentioned recruitment agencies. In your opinion which are the best ones to approach? Oh and thanks again for your help so far.:o

i agree with regulator, you're in a better position with office/admin skills than being the worlds most experienced carpenter right now by my reading. you will find work, temp work is very much your friend, and as said, just bring enough cash to survive while you find work (it can take an age even when your skills are in demand)
