But not the guys in the debating society who invited this Nazi along knowing full well what happens everywhere he tries to speak?

There was a vote held.Any members of NUIG were more than welome to vote.Obviously the socialist group I mentioned earlier are attention seekers seeming as few if none of them turned up to the debate. The event was well advertised.I don't see Lit and Deb threatening violence.

Oh, and you never answered my earlier question; Nazis only or would you widen the scope to include, say, Falangists or Fascists?

Yes I did. No, I wouldn't widen the scope. What part of Nazi's only are you struggling with?

No, any member of the debating society was entitled to vote. Huge difference.

Question 1:Are you a student or staff member in NUIG?
Question 2:Do you plan being there on that night?

Question 1:Are you a student or staff member in NUIG?

    No.
Question 2:Do you plan being there on that night?

Its midweek, I'm unlikely to get there.

All you had to do was have a NUIG student/staff card.Didn' have to be a member of Lit and Deb so that statement is totally false.

According to a human rights group The invitation was granted following a vote by the Society last week: 100 for and 63 against inviting Irving

Why would anyone who studies or works in NUIG have a vote in an internal society matter?

Grand so, I wanted confirmation on that as your definition of Nazi was a bit vague.

Indeed, and on that point, How do you know that Irving is a Nazi? He may be a Nazi sympathiser, but that's not exactly the same thing - Edward VIII was one, but not actually a Nazi by any stretch.

Or are sympathisers included? In which case what part of Nazi's only are you struggling with?

Becaue it was a contentous issue. As far as I remember, I have never joined Lit and Deb yet I have been allowed to vote.

I'm confused. Are you saying the L&D allowed non members vote on this?

Technically I believe that all member of NUIG are members of Lit and Deb.You had to show a student card while voting.

They may well define "the house", and hence those who are allowed to vote on a motion, as all NUIG students (and possibly NUIG staff) who are in attendance. It'll take me a very short time to get clarification on that if anyone really feels that it's a relevant issue for the thread. Regardless though, if they're Lit & Deb rules and they were followed to issue the invitation, why is that an issue in regard to the specific invitation?

Please, because if its normal par for the course to only allow paid up members a vote but they lifted that for this issue, I call shenanigans.

I believe that silencing Nazi propaganda is an end that justifies the means.

With respect, all you're doing is repeating what I've already accepted, rather than answering the question I'm asking about it.

Well, is it "normal par for the course to only allow paid up members a vote"?

Actually, I may be wrong.I think it might only be the NUIG student body that is allowed to vote. There was nothing lifted for the debate. It has always been like that.

I have no idea, I thought you were going to find out?

Somehow, I misinterpreted the word "please" as something other than "if you wouldn't mind" (more ah, come on). Apologies. So...

Apparently, normal procedure is that whoever makes up the house can vote (in other words, NUIG people that are there). This would tally with general procedure in other Irish university debating societies, at least the ones in my experience. As I read their constitution, it's completely in line with that so normal procedure was retained for this particular debate and vote.

According to a friend in NUIG (who was helping plan a protest) this has been postponed til September 2009.

I asked ONYD a perfectly reasonable and carefully explained question 2 pages back and he has completely ignored it while continuing to argue with others.

And HE calls shenanigans? I think someone doesnt want to answer me.

He's banned at the moment. He gets access again in two (or three?) weeks.

One of the girls in my class is involved in Lit and Deb, she said he's coming next week (so thursday 19th), you need to get a ticket for it, students only.

I spoke at the Lit and Deb event in favor of Irving coming.

Labour was the only party on campus to organise in defence of free speech, posting around Noam Chomsky and Voltaire quotes.

I found the debate quite amusing, the Socialists were claiming that they would only block Irving and responded to claims they were seeking to silence those who disagreed with them by saying they wouldn't block Fianna Fáil if they came.

Later on in the term, they blocked Bertie. Brilliant.

I'm sad it's been pushed forward until September, I won't be able to attend.
The AntiFascists were preparing to come in force, a lad I know in the SWP said they were coming on Sunday to "scout out the territory"
